aibu to make ds sleep in a dog basket?

Ds is a chunky 4 month old who has grown out of his Moses basket. Our bedroom is a reasonable size but with our super king bed, nappy changing unit, wardrobes, and now a cot bed in it there is very little floor space and I thought that getting rid of the cot bed and buying a dog basket for ds to sleep in would make the room look larger and less cluttered. I can store it under our bed in the daytime to make things even tidier.

OH thinks it's a crazy idea to put a baby in a dog basket bit I am convinced it is a genius plan.

We don't own any pets so it's not like there will be any confusion over who sleeps in it.

This is the craziest ideas I've ever read on MN. Grin Move out the changing table and keep the cot. Your baby will be sleeping for hour's and hour's every day/night. It isn't the same as a dog bed used for a nap in a nursery. Though I also think dog beds in a nursery is a crazy idea. Also if he's on the floor in a dog bed, he will be in a draft, even if you have really well fitting door.

I don't think it's such a crazy idea. google 'mattress cut to size' and you'll see lots of companies you just need to supply with the dimensions (and payment)

would a travel cot fit better - and be of more use for longer, holidays, etc.

Clearly an appropriate bed for your DC is more important than a changing unit. The changing unit can be in any room!

We used a travel cot between 4 and 6 months, with a mattress in it. Folds away if you want to and smaller than cotbed

It's a barking idea, but it's given me paws for thought.

What sort of wine were you drinking?

I should think chemicals would be the least of your worries, if you put your baby on a dog mattress that's even worse than putting them on a sofa in terms of squishiness and gaps etc, and falling asleep on the sofa is supposed to be one of the riskiest things you can do.

Anyone remember this? Finnian's Montessori Room You could have a lovely tasteful "Montessori" bed!

Wow, people start drinking early in the OP's neck of the woods!

Baby sleeping in a dog's bed, I really have heard it all now. Why not suggest to your OH that he sleeps in the dog bed, you sleep in the cot bed & then the baby has the super kingsize bed all to himself. Problem solved! Wink

This nursery that uses dog beds, what's it called? How did you find it? Are the other children hairy? Do any of them say "sausages"?

Move out the changing table and cot bed (to wherever he'll be sleeping when he's older) and get a cheap cot (eBay) and new mattress.

Plenty of space for everybody Grin

I'll probably be regarded as slightly odd but Ds1 slept in a dog bed at nursery when he was about 6 months old. The little so and so would not nap in a cot because he would only sleep snuggled up to me at night and not very well then In the dog bed however he actually napped and I love the nursery worker who thought of it. They were a bit worried when ofsted inspected but they got an outstanding, in part based on responding to ds's needs. Hv thought it was a good idea as well!

Not sure I'd do it all night but anything that got him sleeping, even briefly, during the day went down well with me. Grin

I love the remarks about slavering and sausages!
Babies do sleep in dog basket type things at some nurseries but they aren't dog baskets. I called them that to a local authority adviser once, I told her my granddaughter slept in a dog basket at her nursery and the adviser got most upset with me. She explained, quite forcefully that it wasn't a dog basket and explained they were Dream Coracles. www.communityplaythings.co.uk/~/media/images/cpuk/product/product-family/sleeping/dream-coracle.jpg?mw=150

Put him in a drawer (an open one preferably). It didn't do our great grandparents any harm!

Why dont you just slip him under the bed thereby saving you the cost of a dog basket? If you tie him to a skateboard he would be easy to move in and out.
