aibu to make ds sleep in a dog basket?

Ds is a chunky 4 month old who has grown out of his Moses basket. Our bedroom is a reasonable size but with our super king bed, nappy changing unit, wardrobes, and now a cot bed in it there is very little floor space and I thought that getting rid of the cot bed and buying a dog basket for ds to sleep in would make the room look larger and less cluttered. I can store it under our bed in the daytime to make things even tidier.

OH thinks it's a crazy idea to put a baby in a dog basket bit I am convinced it is a genius plan.

We don't own any pets so it's not like there will be any confusion over who sleeps in it.

When you say "get rid of" the cot bed do you mean sell it/give it away? Where will your ds sleep when he's outgrown his dog basket?

I don't think it's that much of a bonkers idea really, although getting a decent mattress to fit may be a problem.

Grin kids love getting in a dog basket when they are older but you would have to be very careful about safety. Also never tell anyone and keep the moses basket and let any nosy people think he sleeps in it still.

Drawer would be traditional.

I'd only use a dog basket in an emergency, or with a bigger baby who would be ok on any mattress (after removing dog, though toddler DD didn't get that bit of the memo when she snuggled in with friend's dogs for an afternoon nap once)

I cant see the problem.

What age do they start rolling over? Obviously it might become and issue then.

And yes Hettie (which my grandma was called!) my mum was in a drawer for a while when she was born.

Actually, yes a drawer would make more sense.....

But the baby has got a perfectly good cotbed to sleep in,all op needs to do is move the changing unit out of her bedroom.
What happens when the child grows out of the dog bed?!

Sorry but it is a ridiculous idea when you have a cotbed already.

Use the bottom drawer of the changing unit instead - then it will simply push back in when he's not in it (remember not to close it with him in though as I'm sure that would be frowned upon)

Do you have another bedroom for your ds to go into eventually OP? Can't you put the changing table into that room?

Move the changing unit out. DS slept in a cot in our room but the changing unit was in his bedroom. It had the added advantage of getting him used to being in that room. I used to keep the changing bag beside my bed for any middle of the night changes.

I see the logic OP but in a couple of months your ds will just crawl out of it!

Surely it would be a suffocation and hence SIDS risk. The sides aren't rigid, and the cushion certainly isn't! Might as well put them on a pillow Confused

I have pondered on getting a dog bean bag for ds to nap on during the day as he is nearly to big for his bean bag and people were horrified by this thought. So I'm going to make a bigger bean bag instead, I thought it was a great idea.
Though wouldn't use it at night, I also have limited floor space in the bedroom due to king bed and cot, but I don't spend a lot of time in it apart from sleeping and its not forever.

Would depend on the type, Bertie. I was imagining a reed basket-type thing which wouldn't be too dissimilar in construction to a moses basket.

Are you talking about those squishy pillowy things OP?

Could he sleep on the changing unit?

I was assuming it would be one with rigid sides.

You'd not be likely to get a mattress to fit though.

If it was that dangerous surely the nursery wouldn't get away with using them?

Our youngest slept in a travel cot in our room (with a proper mattress) for the first year because her elder sibling was still in the cot (close age gap). Travel cots certainly take up less room than cot beds.

Move the changing unit to the baby's room (DS was in with us for over a year and has always been changed in his own room). Then you'll have space for the cotbed. If its still too big get yourself to Ikea and buy a basic cot instead.

A dogbed isn't checked for chemical's like a baby's mattress and looks like a suffocation hazard to me.

Provided it had a decent mattress and sturdy sides why not.

A Moses basket is basically a dog basket for people.

I could see both my dds sleeping quite happily on a dog basket knowing them :o

Or you could use a travel cot which you fold up on the morning.

Babies sleep anywhere, mine slept on the floor next to my bed for months as i was in temporary housing and only had a single bed, he was fine.

I'm sorry but this thread had really made me laugh, put your baby in a dog basket but keep a changing unit in your room? Madness.....

Grin At putting him in a draw, poor baby probably would just like to stay in his cot.

I genuinly think a dog bed is just a little bed, looks quite comfy and should be fine...at least for a few months
