To wonder when the "Bun look" will go out of fashion?

Im talking about those stupid donut ring things to make a massive over-sized scary bun. Everyday for the past few years i leave the house, now and then I see next door neighbour and her 3 daughters, all with matching buns.

I get on the bus to go to work, Im surrounded by buns.

I go to the shops, Im once again surrounded by women with buns.

They look ok on young girls doing dance classes, at a push teenagers, but for gods sake, the woman I've just seen in the post office had a bun wider than her head Shock. I could not stop staring at it. They just remind me of those stupid hair washing plastic things your mum used to get you to wear so the water doesnt go in your eyes!

Please i beg you, throw your donut ring in the bin!!

Oh dear to the giant bun ring. That woman looks, somehow, like Minnie Mouse. In fact, they all do...

The problem for me is not the bun. It is the thin straggly hair I have, combined with the hamster cheeked face, that make this look unwearable for me.

I do like the idea of wearing a swimming ring on my head, If only to see my neighbours face. Shes around 55, eldest daughter is 19, then 15 and 7.

They do get some odd looks when theyre altogether. Its like watching a mother with her ducklings all matchy matchy. There uniform consists of the bun of course, then a blazer and pair of massive sunglasses. I cant stay and chat to her for too long as the urge to laugh in her face is too much to bear sometimes.

I have one for when I work at my hotel job. It's quite small and I've always worn my long hair in a bun anyway. A bun ring makes it neat and tidy and IMHO my one is fairly discreet and not much bigger than my bun would be without it if I backcombed.

My nearest Tesco is in drug-smuggler-chic central, huge buns, drawn on eyebrows, big earrings and this season they seem to have all started to wear parkas (with floral linings).

I am in awe at the level of construction they must take, and can spend many a happy minute (don't want to stare for too long, some look well hard) just looking at them.
Is it extensions do you think? Because the size of some of those things you'd need hair like rapunzel to make them up.

There's a girl at my work who draws her eyebrows on in black liquid liner. She starts with a vertical line at the inside edge and then draws along her actual eyebrow. Like this, only the horizontal line is more arched:

She only draws a thin line, too, as her existing eyebrows are plucked to fuck. It is not a good look. She must be early 20s and is v pretty, but the eyebrows are mental.

I like wearing my hair in a moderate bun Blush It requires minimal effort, still looks as intended at the end of the day and stops the DC (small) from pulling my hair.

I have just bought a small donut. I have never had a bun but as I may have to look for a new job I thought it would look smarter for interviews. I have very scruffy hair! I just have to grow my hair long enough now.

Where I work we are not allowed long hair down so lots of people have buns.

Are they horrible for children too? DD1 (6) has to wear a bun for dance exams and loves it. She keeps asking if she can have her hair in a bun for school. Will everyone look at her like Hmm if I let her?

no gwendoline They are perfect for children. Im talking about middle aged women with massive scaffold inspired buns. There is just no need for them, plus i always imagine they hurt after a while. I used to be able to wear a hairband for a few hours before getting a headache, now some of these women dont have those neck collars you get when youve been in an accident, i just dont know!

I think that small, ballerine-type buns look nice. It's those huge ones that add 4ft to your natural height that are problematic for those of us with eyes.

Immature, is this your colleague?

I'm partial to a moderate sized bunnage at the nape of the neck, but I cannot stand the ones plonked right on top of the head, nor a messy top knot.
Both of these tend to go hand in hand with floral tracksuits and open toed wedge boots in my neck of the woods.

I have just shown dd that New look pic and said "that's you, that is"

she looked a bit horrified but didn't take the bun out

Dd 1 wanted a bun for prom last year. I did a French pleat rather than a bun, a tad more elegant imo. They all loved it, apparently, and couldn't believe 'Mum' had done it. I had to teach a few afterwards!

MarmaladeShatkins · 03/03/2014 13:26

Can you teach me how to do a french pleat please, Dawn?!
