Im talking about those stupid donut ring things to make a massive over-sized scary bun. Everyday for the past few years i leave the house, now and then I see next door neighbour and her 3 daughters, all with matching buns.

I get on the bus to go to work, Im surrounded by buns.

I go to the shops, Im once again surrounded by women with buns.

They look ok on young girls doing dance classes, at a push teenagers, but for gods sake, the woman I've just seen in the post office had a bun wider than her head Shock. I could not stop staring at it. They just remind me of those stupid hair washing plastic things your mum used to get you to wear so the water doesnt go in your eyes!

Please i beg you, throw your donut ring in the bin!!

YABU. I was just reflecting the other day on what a cheery fashion this has been, I'll be sad to see it go.

They all look like Mrs Bridges from Upstairs Downstairs

Wonder if this is a localised thing as I haven't noticed this at all where I am (A bit in the sticks - Gloucestershire)

You get them from the shops?! That explains how so many teenagers are suddenly sporting them then. I wondered how so many of them had enough hair to pile up like that! Grin

I quite like a good bun (not on me, I have hardly any length to my hair), but I hate them on the very top of the head, they look ridiculous. Back of head or nape of neck are fine and can look nice & neat. Top of head/near front of head = daft looking.

Ah, hence why they are on the top of the head, that makes sense Clover, the aliens had to find something to replace their attempt with baseball caps worn at a stupid angle.

There is something about these buns I think we are all missing here....

One or two celerities wore them, which then lead to mass hysteria as thousands of women and girls strived to copy them. They started appearing in shops in various sizes and colours - including ones with false hair so the short haired among us could join the club....but its not a club....it's not even a fashion statement because....

They are mind control devices Shock

been watching far too much Dr Who

I was out with my fb and his friend on Saturday night, we met up with the women that bf's friend works with. Every single one of them had a giant scary bun and a polyester play suit on.

I felt as though I had not got the dress code memo.

I wear my hair in a bun most days.

I think the small doughnuts can look good, if the style is done well and the hair is all backcombed. The doughnut just gives a bit of height and structure to the bun without looking very doughnut-like.

The huge ones make me laugh though, especially if they are accompanied with a Croydon face lift around the face and heavily drawn-on brows.

11y Dd had a heart shaped bun on valentines day. Looked pretty cool.

She has the odd donut bun thing at times but not so much in last year or so. Thought they'd died out now.

The one I find really odd, bar the drawn eyebrows, is the curlers in te hair during the day when out and about! Just why?!?!

Where are all these massive buns? Is there some special bun wearers habitat? I have never seen one of these buns around here.

I live in a student area and can confirm that scrunchies are back in, along with hideous frumpy sweaters and jeans that come straight out of Saved by the Bell. Horrible.

When my hair was long but too long to wear down I was able to do all sorts of up dos with pins, combs, chopstick thingies and even pencils, including a classic chignon a la Tippie Hedren in Marnie but I can't figure out how you use a bun ring.

The messy buns are big here. Usually combined with fake tan/short shorts and hoop earrings.

The thing is, it's not the bun itself, it's how it's worn. I exhibit the following to the jury

mule bun

classy bun of similar size

YANBU

I work with a girl who wears one every.single.day.

It's bloody massive and I can't imagine her with anything other than this bun and council face lift it gives her.

I also have no idea of how they work either.

They are hideous things. There's a young woman at my work who has one - it's now wider than her face. I am in awe - how does she actually make it? Confused

Can I just point out that the huge bun is a Mumsnet creation? See here. The OP made an enormous bun doughnut with old tights, like a cave woman making coats of animal skins :o

About 90% of women where I live wear buns on the top of their head, and they get bigger and bigger. I think it's like marrow growing for towns-folk. I admit I do own a donut 'cos I wants to fit in Blush but it involves standing with my head upside down wrestling my ponytail until I am in a total rage so I don't bother.

i like them. its a way to keep my hair tidy for work

Why a bun though, it's so 2013. I want to see other shaped things on people's heads. People need to up their hair topiary game, maybe a wellington boot or a phoenix rising from the flames.

Buns are so amateur.

I love a bun, I've been wearing my hair in a bun (usually with a net over the top) for years and years. Not all the time but I tend to have either a bun or a tight plait when I will be handling food at work. I've never used one of those bun insert sponge things but as my hair is very thick and hip length it does make a big bun.

YANBU I was sitting behind a woman in the cinema with one of those on - so bloody annoying! Ruined my view.

Looks ridiculous too IMHO.

you could put it on strange toilet seats when out so your sweet cheeks don't touch
