Just the single question mark or exclamation mark, please!

OP posts:
differentnameforthis · 03/03/2014 06:36

I'd rather see someone using an interesting analogy or usual vocabulary.

I'd rather see someone start an interesting thread than have to read ANOTHER one telling us what/how we can & can't post.

TheGreatHunt · 03/03/2014 06:41

OP you've been told this already, but it doesn't really reflect well on you either.

SlinkyB · 03/03/2014 06:54

myitchybeaver "I completely agree. I think there is a correlation between lack of vocabulary and intelligence and overuse of the exclamation mark.

More than three exclamation marks in a post = Poster is a tit."

I don't have a particularly wide vocabulary, and I'm sure I'm not half as intelligent as most of the regular posters on here. I use exclamation marks quite a bit, especially if I'm happy or excited.

Shall I just leave mn now? Not be allowed to ask for advice or help for fear of being branded "a tit"?

shakethetree · 03/03/2014 07:00

Op: if this is all you've got to worry about, to the point that it's making you angry, I actually feel quite sorry for you.

TerribleHumanBeing · 03/03/2014 07:02

I thought you meant people, particularly those, who bang on, at length, about their superior English skills, and education, but who write their posts, like this.

MikeLitoris · 03/03/2014 07:08

I have nearly started this thread a few times recently.

I like an exclamation mark. I use them quite a lot. Using anymore than 2 at the end of a word is just ridiculous.

When I read a thread where every sentence ends with !!!!! I always imagine the poster speaking like the excitable dinosaur from toy story.

It is easy enough to make a point without ???!!!!??. It just looks silly.

MikeLitoris · 03/03/2014 07:12

shake how do you know this is all mardy has to worry about? This is what she has chosen to post about. You have no idea what she has to worry about.

Remind me to only ever start threads on whatever my biggest worry is Hmm

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 03/03/2014 07:24

Isn't ?! the Interrobang?

I don't think you can class that in the same category as !!!!!!!!!!

LiberalLibertine · 03/03/2014 07:26

Sometimes you need a ?! Are they allowed?!

Sevensev · 03/03/2014 07:29

You seem to be serious.

I always think that people who think such things have quite a nice life to be bothered by such minute matters.

My iPad has recently started trying to replace commas with exclamation marks - I have to keep a strict eye on it! otherwise my posts really do male me look like a tit.

shakethetree · 03/03/2014 07:40

Mike: true, she could have the worries of the world on her shoulders ( I hope she hasn't ) & starts threads about !!!!! Marks as a distraction - but it still seems a silly thing to get worked up over, I wouldn't even notice tbh.

LittleFriendSusan · 03/03/2014 07:46

I beg to differ. I shudder at "would of", "should of", "brought" when it should be "bought", etc. Hate misuse of apostrophes. I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent. However, I am guilty of the overuse of exclamation marks!! And ellipses... Crucify me... Wink

VivaLeBeaver · 03/03/2014 07:52

I know a head of an English dept who writes "should of"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MinesAPintOfTea · 03/03/2014 08:01

Five, I presumed you were for the appropriate user of exclamation marks at the end of your exclamations. What are your exclamations?

MajorGrinch · 03/03/2014 08:04

I'm more bothered about the proliferation of fucking pointless threads that seems to be going on at the moment.

Title's are mildly interesting, but when you actually read the thread you realise that you've just wasted your time & that the OP's are dicks....

CalamityKate · 03/03/2014 08:06

I agree.

Although I might, on VERY rare occasions use two for emphasis, multiple question/exclamation marks are annoying and unnecessary.

CalamitouslyWrong · 03/03/2014 08:13

No one seems to be complaining about overuse of, say, semicolons though. but many people don't seem to have the faintest idea how to use them

FiveExclamations · 03/03/2014 08:13

My exclamation is that it's too early for exclamations!

Essiebee · 03/03/2014 09:03

More concerned at the proliferation of foul language used in these posts; sign of a limited vocabulary?

hackmum · 03/03/2014 09:09

I get annoyed by the overuse of exclamation marks and question marks and the misuse of apostrophes.

The thing that really winds me up most, however, is the use of trailing dots (...) at the end of every sentence. There is just no reason for it at all. What's wrong with full stops?

YouAreTalkingRubbish · 03/03/2014 09:20

Lol, I use the trailing dots Blush but I try to only use a maximum of three dots and I use them with full knowledge that they are a bit irritating.

Oh the shame. Grin

Blush
JollyGolightly · 03/03/2014 09:21

Although I agree with you in principle, I think posting about it makes you look like a dick.
