To ask where over 40s buy clothes

dinodino27 · 02/03/2014 21:25

I have had most of my clothes since before kids and upwards of 10 years. Since kids I just don't get time to look around the shops.

I have a night out coming up soon (rare). I feel my skinny jeans look good (could be wrong!) So thinking those and nice top.

But where does one buy a suitable top. I have looked online at oasis, boden, french connection but really struggling and wondering where other women my age shop.

I am 42 and a size 12-14 (fairly slim bit with a belly! - that I'd like to hide) and i'd say my style is fairly casual - but obviously for night out i want something a bit fancy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as i really do not want to look like 'mutton dressed and lamb' but also don't want to look 'mumsy'.

Thanks

I'm afraid most of my clothes come from Matalan or the supermarkets - with the occasional outfit from Monsoon for a special occasion.

memyselfandl · 02/03/2014 21:33

Primark to Monsoon. It doesn't matter what age you are, if you feel good in it the label doesn't matter.

dinodino27 · 02/03/2014 21:36

I understand what you say memy AND and if i had the time to actually get to a shop I am sure i would be able to sort this out BUTI am going to have to buy online as no time to get to shop.

I've just bought this from Banana Republic - would be very forgiving around the tum area, you can leave it open or button closed, sleeves can be worn full length or rolled up as shown in the picture - it's a silky floaty fabric. I wore it with superskinny black jeans, big pearl necklace and high courts out to dinner last night.

pudding25 · 02/03/2014 21:40

Look on ASOS website.

Ilovehamabeads · 02/03/2014 21:40

I'm 40, most of my stuff comes from Dorothy Perkins.

tiredandsadmum · 02/03/2014 21:40

for me it is Boden (sale), M&S, supermarkets, desigual (sale only but god their sizing is weird), some of the debenham designers. I buy on ebay quite a bit so have picked up some interesting bits and also some great casual stuff for school run, gardening etc, at really reasonable prices.

I don't like fashion particularly so avoid the really trendy!

emsyj · 02/03/2014 21:41

Oh, I am a 12-14 and the Medium is a perfect fit.

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/03/2014 21:41

Fat Face, White Stuff, Rocha John Rocha at Debenhams and Smart big work deals suits from Jigsaw.

Only1scoop · 02/03/2014 21:42

Boden mainly sale Smile
Laura Ashley
Odd bits from primani and peacocks

Joysmum · 02/03/2014 21:43

M&S and Peacocks for me.

LadyBeagleEyes · 02/03/2014 21:43

Any High Street shop.
40 is no age, times have changed since you became middle aged at 40.

SpagBolgs · 02/03/2014 21:44

I get my clothes from Boden,Crew and occasionally jules

KittensoftPuppydog · 02/03/2014 21:44

Tk maxx and charity shops. Jeans from h&m. Posh handbags and nice boots. Job done.

dinodino27 · 02/03/2014 21:45

thanks emsyj really like the banana republic blouse - exactly the type of thing i am looking for - think i will order in in a medium.

Like Desigual too. Or Helen Douglas House. Is brilliant for designer and posh gear finds.
Can't be arsed with fashion though.

Athrawes · 02/03/2014 21:46

Today I am wearing
Boden jeans
Underarmour top
Lululemon cardigan thing

Tomorrow could be fat face, boden, marks and spencers (not per una!!!), vintage heaven, kathmandu, macpac, max, white stuff

dinodino27 · 02/03/2014 21:46

Going to have a quick look at crew and joules too not heard of them before

I tend to buy dresses from ASOS and would almost always wear a dress on a night out (dressing it down with boots rather than heels if it's not that kind of night)

For a dressy top, I would do ASOS, FC, Coast, Karen Millen, Ted Baker, Oasis, maybe Warehouse, Debenhams as a last resort. Department stores like HOF are good so that you can scan lots of concessions without having to trawl the high street.

I would avoid Next and Marks and Spencer like the plague.

I get nearly all my casual stuff (except jeans) from Superdry at the moment.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if I dress too young now, as my dress sense hasn't changed that much since my 20s!

InkleWinkle · 02/03/2014 21:47

Depending on cash flow I like Peacocks, Dorothy Perkins or Joe Browns.

Have a look at Joe Browns website.

skillsandtea · 02/03/2014 21:48

Mint velvet

cardibach · 02/03/2014 21:48

I'm with LadyBeagle. 42 is young! I'm 49 and still buy clothes wherever I like -DPs, monsoon, Primark, Wallis,Debenhams. Wherever really. Don't think you need to shop 'for your age' - nothing is more ageing!

gordyslovesheep · 02/03/2014 21:49

anywhere! Mainly Next, River Island, DP's, Matalan, H+M, M+S and supermarkets because those are the shops we have locally

biscuitdunkerette · 02/03/2014 21:50

White stuff. Love the tunic tops and dresses - very flattering over the middle Smile (I'm 41)

coffeewithcreamm · 02/03/2014 21:50

I like mint velvet & warehouse.
