To ask where over 40s buy clothes

I have had most of my clothes since before kids and upwards of 10 years. Since kids I just don't get time to look around the shops.

I have a night out coming up soon (rare). I feel my skinny jeans look good (could be wrong!) So thinking those and nice top.

But where does one buy a suitable top. I have looked online at oasis, boden, french connection but really struggling and wondering where other women my age shop.

I am 42 and a size 12-14 (fairly slim bit with a belly! - that I'd like to hide) and i'd say my style is fairly casual - but obviously for night out i want something a bit fancy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as i really do not want to look like 'mutton dressed and lamb' but also don't want to look 'mumsy'.

I'm afraid most of my clothes come from Matalan or the supermarkets - with the occasional outfit from Monsoon for a special occasion.

Primark to Monsoon. It doesn't matter what age you are, if you feel good in it the label doesn't matter.

I understand what you say memy AND and if i had the time to actually get to a shop I am sure i would be able to sort this out BUTI am going to have to buy online as no time to get to shop.

I've just bought this from Banana Republic - would be very forgiving around the tum area, you can leave it open or button closed, sleeves can be worn full length or rolled up as shown in the picture - it's a silky floaty fabric. I wore it with superskinny black jeans, big pearl necklace and high courts out to dinner last night.

for me it is Boden (sale), M&S, supermarkets, desigual (sale only but god their sizing is weird), some of the debenham designers. I buy on ebay quite a bit so have picked up some interesting bits and also some great casual stuff for school run, gardening etc, at really reasonable prices.

I don't like fashion particularly so avoid the really trendy!

Tk maxx and charity shops. Jeans from h&m. Posh handbags and nice boots. Job done.

Like Desigual too. Or Helen Douglas House. Is brilliant for designer and posh gear finds.
Can't be arsed with fashion though.

Tomorrow could be fat face, boden, marks and spencers (not per una!!!), vintage heaven, kathmandu, macpac, max, white stuff

I tend to buy dresses from ASOS and would almost always wear a dress on a night out (dressing it down with boots rather than heels if it's not that kind of night)

For a dressy top, I would do ASOS, FC, Coast, Karen Millen, Ted Baker, Oasis, maybe Warehouse, Debenhams as a last resort. Department stores like HOF are good so that you can scan lots of concessions without having to trawl the high street.

I would avoid Next and Marks and Spencer like the plague.

I get nearly all my casual stuff (except jeans) from Superdry at the moment.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if I dress too young now, as my dress sense hasn't changed that much since my 20s!

Depending on cash flow I like Peacocks, Dorothy Perkins or Joe Browns.

I'm with LadyBeagle. 42 is young! I'm 49 and still buy clothes wherever I like -DPs, monsoon, Primark, Wallis,Debenhams. Wherever really. Don't think you need to shop 'for your age' - nothing is more ageing!
