To ask where over 40s buy clothes

I have had most of my clothes since before kids and upwards of 10 years. Since kids I just don't get time to look around the shops.

I have a night out coming up soon (rare). I feel my skinny jeans look good (could be wrong!) So thinking those and nice top.

But where does one buy a suitable top. I have looked online at oasis, boden, french connection but really struggling and wondering where other women my age shop.

I am 42 and a size 12-14 (fairly slim bit with a belly! - that I'd like to hide) and i'd say my style is fairly casual - but obviously for night out i want something a bit fancy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as i really do not want to look like 'mutton dressed and lamb' but also don't want to look 'mumsy'.

Thanks

Oh, I love the Gap. They have great sales. And their cashmere sweaters are so lovely.

Stinklebell · 03/03/2014 08:59

Not quite 40, bit I don't think that age should be considered when shopping

I'll shop anywhere and everywhere, but lots of my nights out stuff comes from Zara or All Saints

NotYouNaanBread · 03/03/2014 09:10

Not quite 40, but think that's a bit of a red herring anyway. I would look at Whistles, Cos and JCrew.

Hobbs has lovely stuff if you're more conservative/looking for work things.

Unexpectedly, Jack Wills has GREAT tops, dresses and jeans. And loungewear. I'm v flat-chested and have a bit of a tummy and everything I've tried from there over this winter looks great on me - the Fernham jeans are stretchiest jeans known to humanity.

Me + Em is spoken of very highly on here and is very tummy-friendly.

If you wore Isabella Oliver when you were pregnant, you might like Baukjen - their non-pregnant label.

I just buy my clothes from any high street shop, I even still occasionally buy stuff from New Look. I am my 50"s and actually think it doesn't matter where. you buy clothes from as lomg as they suit and fit you.

French connection, Next, Laura Ashley, and I get the odd bit from the supermarket, Gok Wans range at Sainsburys has the odd great top or scarf

CerealMom · 03/03/2014 10:13

Toast, just ignore the boxy look in photos. Look lovely on.

I'm 72.
Debenhams online is lovely. Send for 3 and return 2!
I like Bonmarche online too but that is quite older woman stuff.
Tu in Sainsbury as you shop has lovely stuff and sometimes 25% off.

hellsbellsmelons · 03/03/2014 10:28

I'm obviously a cheap skate as I look on boohoo.com and missguided.com as lot.
Some stuff for the much younger but there's the odd nice bits and very cheap.
Or House of Fraser on line is really good especially in the sale.
I'm 45.

Stinklebell · 03/03/2014 10:34

I've discovered Atterley Road as well recently. 20% off until midnight tonight

Nepotism · 03/03/2014 11:16

Esprit - good quality and some good work clothes too.

Massimo Dutti. Limited range but great fabrics.

BeattieBow · 03/03/2014 11:22

Im 43 and the same size as you. Whistles is my favourite at the moment. at some stage very soon there should be a discount for Whistles - and I generally go a bit mad then!

Also COS, Gap, Topshop, Hush, Me&Em, Zara (sometimes), and shop bop for jeans (I get Rag & Bone jeans as they are the most flattering on me).

I look awful in Boden, although I do keep trying, and don't like M&S, White Stuff, Fatface or any of those. I have gone off Toast in recent years, but did used to like them a lot.

There's some nice stuff in Jigsaw too - I always forget about Jigsaw, but I think that they have some nice basic things (at very expensive prices!).

BeattieBow · 03/03/2014 11:24

NotyouNaanBread - it's good to hear about Jack Wills. I used to really like Aubin and Wills and was one of the few people that mourned it's closing I think. I always think of Jack Wills for my teenage daughter (although she doesn't like it).

LadyRabbit · 03/03/2014 11:28

COS - great quality, cut and last well.
Outnet.com is great for designer bargains
Zara is good for disposable fashion but the problem is just that - good design, dreadful quality! But it's great for trend without being too TopShop IYKWIM.

ouryve · 03/03/2014 11:28

I tend to pick and choose from Next, M&S, Sainsburys and Landsend, skirting around the plethora of polyester, and anything stretchy with Modal in it, as that has a tendency to cling to every lump and bump.
