To ask where over 40s buy clothes

dinodino27 · 02/03/2014 21:25

I have had most of my clothes since before kids and upwards of 10 years. Since kids I just don't get time to look around the shops.

I have a night out coming up soon (rare). I feel my skinny jeans look good (could be wrong!) So thinking those and nice top.

But where does one buy a suitable top. I have looked online at oasis, boden, french connection but really struggling and wondering where other women my age shop.

I am 42 and a size 12-14 (fairly slim bit with a belly! - that I'd like to hide) and i'd say my style is fairly casual - but obviously for night out i want something a bit fancy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as i really do not want to look like 'mutton dressed and lamb' but also don't want to look 'mumsy'.

Thanks

dinodino27 · 02/03/2014 22:42

I ve ordered the banana republic blouse- not sure if i'll wear it on the night out but really like it.

Remembered black coast top i bought years ago i might try to dig out and jazz up with on trend necklace.

Save the Queen on EBay for something different and fit to go out in.

poppycock6 · 02/03/2014 22:54

Have you looked at Apricot? I found some nice styles of clothes there.

GoldenGytha · 02/03/2014 23:05

I'm 47 and buy all my clothes from Asda and Primark.

Also bought the odd thing from New Look or BHS.

Sparklysilversequins · 02/03/2014 23:09

Uniqlo
Fat Face
Manteray at Debenhams
Mango for going out clothes.

bodybooboo · 02/03/2014 23:26

hi I am 50 and go to river island, primark, new look.

wouldn't be seed dead in Bowden or M&S. fuck that.

Burren · 02/03/2014 23:55

Toast, Uniqlo, Comptoir des Cottoniers, Margaret Howell the odd time. I have a tiny wardrobe, though. As I'm a writer currently working entirely from home, I am currently living in the same two shalwar kameez tops and jeans.

bochead · 03/03/2014 01:28

La redoute do some lovely tunic tops that are ideal over jeans. Often do pretty colours too & aren't as commonly worn by the neighbors dog as Boden. Just wish the delivery system wasn't SO slow though, as the prices are often very reasonable.

Oriunda · 03/03/2014 06:24

Plumo (in sale)
Great Plains
Hush

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 03/03/2014 06:47

Am 41, suze 12, and have recently discovered Peopletree.

Beautiful stuff, good discounts in the sake, and ethical!

BikeRunSki · 03/03/2014 06:54

Same age and size as you OP, get a lot of stuff from Gap.

bragmatic · 03/03/2014 07:08

M&S Jeans are fantastic. I'm a recent convert. The waistline is actually at my waist, rather than halfway down my mons.

For tops I like Monsoon, H&M, Topshop, Free People.

I'm 45 and a size 8.

verytellytubby · 03/03/2014 07:22

Love Next skinny jeans. I buy from Zara, ASOS, Primark, River Island generally. Haven't seen anything i like in Top Shop for ages. I bought a beautiful dress from Miss Selfridge recently.

I'm going to order that top. I love it.

verytellytubby · 03/03/2014 07:24

Oh and I'm 40 and a size 12. I don't like Boden at all. I got some lovely Monsoon tops from a seller on EBay.

verytellytubby · 03/03/2014 07:25

Damn that top is sold out in medium. Damn you mumsnetters Wink

Crowler · 03/03/2014 07:26

J Crew
River Island for jeans
M&S occasionally for cashmere sweaters
Whistles

Badvoc · 03/03/2014 07:27

I am 41 and my wardrobe seems to consist of stuff from next, boden (bought off e bay :)), F&F, George and stuff from a local boutique.
For special occasions I like coast and Hobbs.

oldgrandmama · 03/03/2014 07:34

I buy my clothes in GAP and Monsoon - and for special occasions, if I'm not feeling too poor - in Whistles and Reiss. I'm 72, by the way.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 03/03/2014 07:43

Yes completely forgot Zara!

lljkk · 03/03/2014 07:49

Charity shops (cheap & variety)
Next (fits my shape)
M&S (people keep giving us vouchers)
Sainsburys (convenient)

Am 46. Fat Face is what I like look of, fits my style, can't justify the cost!

JockTamsonsBairns · 03/03/2014 08:33

I've been very pleasantly surprised by the stuff in Sainsburys lately, it's worth a look.

I sometimes look at this blog for ideas. I "knew" the blogger from another forum (not NMs).
