"What did you say" is the perfect and only asseptable response.

OuterFromOutersville · 01/03/2014 22:35

Ah, okay, I think I'll say 'Sorry, what did you say?' then. If it's good enough for the Queen...

perfectstorm · 01/03/2014 22:42

I used to get told off for saying "pardon" and told to say "what". DH got the opposite, as a kid. (We've compromised on "I'm sorry?" or "Excuse me?" with our own.)

nennypops · 01/03/2014 22:46

Other mum should be judging you for thinking "pardon" is preferable to "what".

missmarplestmarymead · 01/03/2014 22:53

'What' is more correct than 'pardon.' people like the Mitford sisters used to refer to the middle class suburbs as 'Pardonia.'

oldgrandmama · 01/03/2014 22:59

Er, in the best circles, 'what' is correct, not 'pardon'. But who cares?

WandaDoff · 01/03/2014 23:14

Pardon is awfully bourgeois IMO

Like fish knives & serviettes.

NearTheWindymill · 01/03/2014 23:23

Sorry. What. Eh. Say again. Did you mean to be so rude?

Pardon - on a par with farting in public and going pink rather than looking at the dog.

YouTheCat · 01/03/2014 23:29

My partner farts in public (only the silent variety) and then walks away from me, leaving me with the smell and the shame. It leaves me with no one to blame.

As for 'pardon', I only use that for excusing a belch. If I haven't heard someone I say 'Excuse me, could you repeat that as I didn't hear'.

I would judge anyone for drinking peppermint tea, unless they have a really smelly bum looks at dp .
