To think Judge Judy gets it wrong sometimes

As above , I like watching judge Judy but get annoyed sometimes when she says things like 'it's your fault for not getting married before having children'
'Is there any reason why you're not married but been together for 10 years?'
'Im smarter than you'

It's not a courtroom, it's a set. I tried to get tickets, the people there are extras. The funds come from the producers so I'm not sure why they get so heated.

I think her views on children outside marriage are old fashioned.

I love her sayings.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 01/03/2014 15:55

This is an interesting clip of her not "in role." I think she speaks well on gay marriage.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 01/03/2014 15:56

Yes i agree she is old fashioned WRT her views on children and marriage.

I also saw a horrible episode once where a woman had made an arrangement with her MiL to provide childcare in return for living with her and the children so the wiman could work- her husband is in the forces so not there to do opposite shifts.

JJ kept saying "look after your own kids. If you dont wanna look after them dont have them. I dont get why people have kids if they dont wanna look after them"

I've seen her doing it a few times on childcare cases.

Odd attitude IMO as i would assume she worked while her 5 dcs were growing and employed childare.

I don't know about the people at the back being actors but they are mostly young women .... Haven't seen a grey hair there yet.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 01/03/2014 16:57

Yes a lot of young women in the audience.

CinderellaRockefeller · 01/03/2014 16:58

I saw a documentary about Judge Judy, she was a really interesting character. She was talking about the grind of working in the family courts in New York, and how difficult it was as out of the hundreds of cases that she saw in a year she felt that she probably made a proper difference in about 10 of them, and the rest, no matter what interventions you made, fell by the wayside. Thought it was an interesting insight into her character and why she's so no nonsense.

StickyProblem · 01/03/2014 17:02

My favourite quote from her is, "Don't pee on me and tell me it's raining!" Say it all the time at work..

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 01/03/2014 17:05

I love that one too sticky! Grin

I can totally understand why she is no nonsense. I am sure she has had so much experience of people trying to pull the wool over and wriggle out of their responsibilities that she has become so firm on what should happen.

I do agree with her mostly.

The dcs have been on the recieving end of "what would judge judy say" questions Grin

SometimesLonely · 01/03/2014 17:05

Paul O'Grady had her on his show about 3 years ago. She's very petite.

CPtart · 01/03/2014 17:15

"On your best day, you're not half as good as me on my worst day."
"You think they keep me here for my looks?"

perplexedpirate · 01/03/2014 17:19

'Beauty is fleeting, dumb is forever'.

Love her! Smile

Loving this thread!

"Are you trying to talk over me? This is how it works- when my mouth is moving nobody else's moving. They cut off your microphone, they dont cut off mine"

30 hours a week? You must be exhausted!
I love JJ.

basgetti · 01/03/2014 17:35

I love the show, but she does get it wrong sometimes. She seems to have an inability to understand some of the dynamics of abusive relationships and sometimes borders on victim blaming, and her recent comments on disability were downright shitty.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 01/03/2014 17:36

Yes to victim blaming.

What dis she say about disability?

basgetti · 01/03/2014 17:40

She criticised people who receive disability for conditions like Lupus and MS, because her family members have those conditions and have never needed to claim benefits. She appeared to lump them in with alcoholics and shirkers.

meboo · 01/03/2014 17:47

iT'S JUST A WHOLE LOAD OF WHO SHOT JOHN.....

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 01/03/2014 17:54

Oh basghetti that is bad. MS can have people bedridden she sounds quite ignorant about that for someone who has sufferers in the family. Her family members are the 'lucky' end of the spectrum.

lljkk · 01/03/2014 18:01

Even the criminal courts can have an awful lot of magistrate/judge telling dysfunctional people what to do. that part I like, rings true.

aprilanne · 01/03/2014 18:07

she was a family judge for 30 years .then asked her to be a judge in small claims .i think she was retiring from court .but in america its strange how they telivise .legal proceedings .i watch all the time .god its sad

missmarplestmarymead · 01/03/2014 18:08

I wonder why she calls Bryd by his surname when she addresses him..not Petri or Officer Byrd?

She is very supportive of gay marriage: I think she officiated at the ceremony of the John Barrowman.

She only ever genuinely smiles at dogs or very small children.

whatever5 · 01/03/2014 18:12

I love watching Judge Judy although she is quite biased and I'm sure she gets things wrong quite often. I doubt that she is ignorant about MS though considering that her daughter has it. I presume that she was saying that someone who wasn't disabled by MS shouldn't be claiming benefits. I doubt that she would expect a bedridden person not to claim!

BakerStreetSaxRift · 01/03/2014 18:16

I love her, she is very smart and very no nonsense.

The problem she has with people not getting married is that they apparently get more welfare in the States if you are single, so she is making a point that they shouldn't be claiming, I think.

The ONLY thing I disagree with her on is when she won't hear a car about domestic violence because the victim continued a relationship with him afterwards. Sometimes people don't think they can leave. However, I guess she is kind of saying "you need to take some responsibility for yourself and leave", so I don't know.
