Have you asked around about borrowing a dress?
I tried on loads of dresses that my mum's friends' daughters had worn and were happy to lend, but unfortunately none were the right size, so I ended up buying one.
What size are you? Maybe one of us could lend you a dress?

TinyDiamond · 14/03/2014 11:02

Dress: borrow one or buy second hand from ebay, preloved or a facebook selling group.

If you like vintage then keep your eyes out in charity shops, antiques centres and vintage fairs. But bear in mind it is so fashionable now some of these go for hundreds.

The oxfam bridal shop is in Leicester, where I live. If you tell me your size and preferences I am happy to browse for you when I am in town tomorrow and take some pics on my phone to send to you. They do children's formal wear too. Can this be borrowed from anyone you know?

You could also hire everything too? This may be the way to go with the guys suits esp if you want matching (?)

The flower in jar idea is good the other thing that is common here is to go down to a flower wholesalers on the morning of the wedding to bulk buy then arrange yourself on tables and do your own bouquet. Personally I much prefer this look to professionally 'done' flowers. But then I do see flowers as a huge waste of money as I have terrible hayfever Grin

Countess I was suprised about the cake price too. She said she does it for hobby, though she does have some pretty good cakes up. If someone can tell me whether Im allowed to link it onhere, & she is happy for me to do so, then I will. She said £5 should cover petrol.

Fudgy That dress is lovely! So simple. Thank you for the link.

Still I am a size 14 atm.

Tiny Not worried about matching suits. As long its its grey, it'll look fine.Lovely offer about Oxfam bridal, will take you up on that, thqnk you. Am size 14, hope to be 12 by then, but will see! I prefar sleeves I think. Then style, I really dont know. Not a big gown, IYKWIM. Dont mind the length of i.

CountessOfRule · 15/03/2014 15:36

Some nice dresses:

Silver from Monsoon, £89 full price. From their bridesmaid range.

White ish from Debenhams, £26 full price. Probably a partying frock but recognisably bridal IMHO.

Silver John Lewis, £52. A bit funkier.

GreenLandsOfHome · 15/03/2014 15:57

I'd be careful about the cake.

How big is it?

Dp is making our wedding cake. It's a 3 tier traditional fruit cake, big enough for about 80 people. The ingredients cost him £30, so obviously a fab price for us, but it will take him hours.

I'd wonder why someone would bother spending hours on a cake for pretty much cost price.

CountessOfRule · 15/03/2014 16:58

Agreed. Unless a hobbyist building up a portfolio before going pro.

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 16/03/2014 11:26

Countess Really like the Debenhams one. Cant seem to get the Monsoon one up, link just takes me to to the main page.

GreenLands I am getting slightly worried about the cake now.

Its for the drinks after our ceremony. So just to feed us, dc, parents and siblings. Not for all the 80 people following week. Does tgat make a difference, or is it still suspiciously cheap?

OP posts:
CountessOfRule · 16/03/2014 11:45

So maybe an eight-inch cake? I still think that's cheap but it makes more sense than a big cake.

Will try to screenshot the monsoon one later.

somethingwillturnup · 16/03/2014 13:56

I wore this skirt with a similar (not exactly the same though) corset. Second wedding.

www.thedarkangel.co.uk/en/product/463-avalon-skirt

The avalon dress is beautiful too, and can be done any almost any colour.

somethingwillturnup · 16/03/2014 13:56

Sorry

GreenLandsOfHome · 16/03/2014 14:04

Maybe not so bad in regards to the cake then...maybe would have cost a tenner for the ingredients...if it's fairly simple and classic, £30 wouldn't be a 'worrying' price.

Dh makes cakes for family and friends who ask...he usually just takes £5-£10 after cost price, as he's doing it as a favour. He has mentioned going more pro, and has always said that the first 30 or so cakes he made he'd do cheap just to get some photo's of various styles.

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 18/03/2014 16:06

Yes, about that size for the cake, will check in a while. ( calling her to ckheck a few things)

somethingwillturnup you're right, the Avalon dress is beautiful. Way , way out of my price range though.

Had a read of another thread on hrre, and it got me thinking. Is it ok to wear my engagement ring as my wedding ring?
My ring is an odd shape, and cant find one that fits into it, IYSWIM? Plus I really love my engagement ring. Its white gold, and has the sweetest little diamond. I wouldnt wear 2 rings anyway. Just cant seem to find one I like, and dont want to spend the money either if Im honest. Seems silly whe we dont have the money too. Has anyone done this?

Hello IfIDont. I had cupcakes in different flavours with different coloured icing for my wedding many years ago displayed on a 3 tiered wooden stand.

We recreated the look recently for a friend as attached. Very cheap but very effective.

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 18/03/2014 16:40

Hello growingold
They look lovely. In fact a tower of cupcakes would be perfect for the party we having afterwards. Would feed everyone cake cheaply, as you said. (Dont know if you read the other thread, we are getting married in tiny chapel, immediate family only, then having our reception few days later. ) Thank you for a wonderfully simple, yet effective way to serve cake to the masses!

OP posts:
CountessOfRule · 18/03/2014 16:52

I did a three-tier cupcake cake for a friend's milestone birthday last year. Someone had to stand there refilling the (standard size) stand because we couldn't fit all the cupcakes on first time! You might need more than one Wink - but eg Party Pieces do nice cardboard ones in chintzy designs that would fit your theme.

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 18/03/2014 17:02

countess I have a partypieces brochure. They look good and are cheap. Just had a look at their websitr, and see they have a wedding section. Off to browse now.

Still no dress! Getting worried now. Not long to go..
Some lovely links though. Maybe 1 of them.

Just a thought, I know that the threads have helped other people too. Be lovely to hear a few more budget stories.

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 20/03/2014 08:12

Is a colour dress a little bit odd?
Desperate measures etc..

www.riverisland.com/women/dresses/maxi-dresses/Dark-red-embellished-waist-draped-maxi-dress-652734

something along those lines?

OP posts:
CountessOfRule · 20/03/2014 08:24

Link points to home page for me. I think red would be a shame tbh. That's why I'm suggesting white-ish (grey to cream) or at least pastel, so you don't look like all your guests and blend into the background.

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 20/03/2014 08:53

I think your right. I just cant seem to find one I truely love. I like some of them, just not sure if iI like them enough IYSWIM.

Every dress I do think will be perfect is out of my budget.

I'll keep looking.

OP posts:
IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 21/03/2014 20:01

Ok, I have decide that the H&M dress Is probably the one to go for.

Its a good price and looks simple but lovely.
Will keep looking, just to keep options open. Im running out of time though!

Now shoes and perhaps nice jacket or something to compliment it.

OP posts:
Charlesroi · 31/03/2014 20:51

I think a shrug would look nice with that dress, Perhaps H&M will do one to compliment it?

Don't worry, the list is getting smaller. Have a Wine

Charlesroi · 31/03/2014 21:21

Florence and Fred have some dresses that might Work too. Two 'wedding'
dresses and some long prom dresses - all about £60-£80.
I thought this one was quite nice
This I really liked

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 07/04/2014 09:28

Hello Charlesroi Thank you for the links, they are lovely dresses.

I know what I have to do, its just getting it all done in the right time.

9 weeks to go! So excited & a big thank you to every mumsnetter that has commented and supported on both of the threads.

You've all helped me bring the wedding together on my tiny budget and its turning into something amazing.

I thought I'd bring the thread, could really do with the help for finishing touches etc. Mainly accessories on a budget, hIrstyles, cheap makeup tips last minute things.
