Vintage - lovely shape.

elQuintoConyo · 13/03/2014 08:02

I got married in a huge pink dress from 1950s, £120 ebay, not everyone's Brew but I fell in love with it and it suited me and my personality to a tea. Bouquet and button holes for groom, DF and DFil made out of buttons and felt. Also made special button brooches for Dm and DSis. I have a wonderful reading somewhere... If I can find it, I'll dig it out.
Oh, and engagement ring also ebay, 1910 sapphire and two diamonds Smile
I had such a wonderful day, I'd love to do it all over again.

pussycatdoll · 13/03/2014 08:08

Lovely reading :)

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 13/03/2014 11:01

DellyBobs I have looked, someone linked me to ppreworn dresses on the first thread, will have another look now though.

Countess They are nice, dont think they would sort me though, however love the colour idea. Do you know of any others similar?

elQuinto reading would be fab, thank you. Off to nose at ebay rings..

pussycat it is a lovely thread, isnt it? Wonderful people on here.

pussycat just realised, did you mean the reading I put on here? I thought that you meant reading the other thread!

OP posts:
IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 13/03/2014 11:05

Ooh, hold on. Did you mean that too countess?

I thought you were both talking about the other thread makes lovely reading!

(Trys to contain excitement that I may have come up with a good reading idea)

The best wedding I ever went to was on a budget, the whole thing felt very personal and totally reflected the bride and grooms personalities, the bride wore red. she looked stunning.
I cant help much with ideas, but I wish you well.

eosmum · 13/03/2014 11:23

My sister got a dress from Monsoon, was really lovely.

eosmum · 13/03/2014 11:28

CountessOfRule · 13/03/2014 11:29

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 13/03/2014 12:25

Left to do:

The cake
wedding dress
suits
outfits for dc
Best place to get food from.

Lots more, but these are top of my list atm.

MummyBeerest · 13/03/2014 12:51

Doesn't M&S do wedding cakes? I perused them online. I want one for my birthday. All for me.

BakingEating · 13/03/2014 13:16

We baked and decorated our own 3 tiered cake. It worked because it was a traditional boozy fruit cake that could be made well in advance. You can hire tins or buy them, and you can also get ready to roll icing and marzipan. Then decorate with flowers!

themaltesefalcon · 13/03/2014 14:09

OP, in all honesty, I don't know about that reading. The quality of the "poem" is not great. Lofty sentiments are expressed with surprising banality. "We are only young until we are old"? I burst out laughing at that (sorry).

Why not choose something more traditional? There are masses of real, genuinely beautiful love poetry in English. You have many centuries' worth of poetic output to choose from. Here are some suggestions.

Leo Marks - The Life that I Have (very simple and beautiful, but not banal)
Francis William Bourdillon - The Night has a Thousand Eyes (sad but heartfelt)
William Shakespeare - Sonnet 116 (a classic)
e.e. cummings - somewhere i have never travelled (modern, but beautiful)

There are oodles more out there.

Good luck with the preparations! :)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/03/2014 14:50

Sorry, but I agree about the poem. The grammar is off and reading about book burnings at a wedding seems ... strange.

Can I put in a pre-emptive plea against the Captain Corelli one about syphillis that's so inexplicably popular, too?

I love the sweet peas idea, though.

twinklytoes · 13/03/2014 15:05

Cake -
a)find a local homebaker via FB and see if they will make your cake, make sure they are insured etc and compare quotes. Some are surprisingly good quality for money.
b) or buy M&S, stack yourself and order a handmade wedding topper via ebay to put on top and co-ordinating ribbon and pin round each layer.
or C) Ask selected guests to bring cake and forgo a traditional wedding cake for sampling loads of different homemade cakes.

FOOD: M&S or Waitrose should be able to pre-order food platters. Or the local catering college might be able to do something?? Get quotes for buffet from catering companies without announcing its for a wedding!

Find out guests talents and ask them to gift you their talent in lieu of a present e.g. if someone decorates cakes ask them to do this or if another enjoys photographer ask they share their photos etc.

IfIDontSnowAndYouDontSnow · 14/03/2014 06:04

Ithemaltesefalcon & LRD Points noted.I Reread it a few a times and can see the faults.

I like the life that I have. Have read that before and it is beautiful.

Also Captain Corelli point, had no idea it was about syphilis.
(Promises to get it from library asap, to indorm myself on such matters)

twinklytoes Took your advice on the fb pages. Found loads of cake makers locally. Any way, after much looking at photos etc, found the perfect one.
Its a wonderful cake of sponge, freshly whipped cream, fresh fruits & white chocolate fingers.
Looks great and is a bargain price e of £32. She will also deliver itstraight to pub for us.

Haven't read other thread - but just to reiterate what eonsmum said - check out Monsoon for your dress. My sister also got a beautiful dress for her wedding in Monsoon - in the sale Smile .

CountessOfRule · 14/03/2014 09:22

£32?!

That sounds too good to be true, honestly. Is it going to be tiny?

Enough fresh fruit, icing, cream etc for a celebration cake as well as the usual flour, butter, sugar, eggs is going to be at least £10 before she's factored in petrol, electricity or her time, leaving her about 35p/hour. Is she just a hobbyist?

It's so cheap I'm suspicious.

FudgeyCookie · 14/03/2014 10:33

Op, I'm not sure when it's due to come on sale, but h and m are bringing out their own wedding dress for £60. Might be worth a look, I personally think it's quite nice!

FudgeyCookie · 14/03/2014 10:36

Dress

This is the one not on sale yet I don't think.

CountessOfRule · 14/03/2014 10:41

Ooh that's nice. It says this spring, and OP's wedding is this summer, so could be well timed.
