became the norm? I appreciate that not all young ladies adopt this look (my own DD being one of them) but I couldn't help feeling a bit Confused skiffing through my DS's Instagram last night at the endless duck face pout selfies of young ladies he goes to school with who all look exactly the same because of this current "uniform". It just made me feel a bit depressed. I'm 48 but when I was young we had a bit more diversity and of course we were au naturel. AIBU?

I think teenagers now look far more individual than in my day. It's all geek glasses and men's shirts and trainers with dresses around here. Much more stylish than I was at that age. The girls either have perfect, full-coverage make up ( I can't do mine like that aged 30!) or wear none at all. Definitely no fake tan though.

truelymadlysleepy · 28/02/2014 19:53

Don't for IG is strongly edited by my DC anyway to show them in the err, best possible light.

BankWadger · 28/02/2014 20:42

As bad as it looks you do have to admit it is better than the white lead paint look and massive wigs that were fashionable a few hundred years ago.

CerealMom · 28/02/2014 21:04

In my mid teens I had the 'Dedrie Barlow' long perm and glasses look. Paired with clothes (like my glasses) chosen from Tammy Girl by my DM.

Those were tough years.

nf1morethanjustlumpsandbumps · 28/02/2014 21:06

It's the eyebrows for me the thick caterpillar ones. That look like they've been drawn on with a sharpie

KonkeyDong · 28/02/2014 21:32

We were served by a waitress who had the bleach blonde big bun hair, spouse brow thing going on.

DH was muttering about not being able to understand her expression cos of the brow / purple blusher going on. He also asked why it looked like she had Ewan the sheep pinned on her head. I couldn't stop laughing.

KonkeyDong · 28/02/2014 21:33

^Scousebrow not spouse brow.

TheArticFunky · 28/02/2014 21:37

I do think some teenagers are stunning these days and I can't work
that one out. When I was a teen we were all fairly average looking a few had the pretty girl next door look but nobody was a supermodel . When I see photos of my friends daughters on facebook they are all model material and some of them are incredibly beautiful in a natural way.

Are people evolving to become more attractive?

squoosh · 28/02/2014 21:41

Konkey this ----> Hmm is a 'spouse brow'.

KonkeyDong · 28/02/2014 21:45

Arf squoosh Grin

WallyBantersJunkBox · 28/02/2014 21:52

Artic I know what you mean - glossy hair, fantastic skin, perky cleavage. My nieces friends Facebook pics..Shock

I showed DH a pic of her and her friends. Innocent photo of them sat round a table in a Pizza restaurant....with their boobs half hanging out of tiny vests. He couldn't look, got really embarrassed. Grin

I think teens are more aware of diet - our school canteen served burger and chips or hotdog and chips everyday. Hmm
We didn't drink water all day.
Make up was lanolin fueled cheap crap.
Conditioner wasn't really commonly used.
Decent quality fashion is so much cheaper these days
Hair products are in abundance and more advanced
No straighteners
Hair dye jobs were really unnatural and damaging, as were perms
No one used moisturizer when I was in school
No one got waxed

Pregnantberry · 28/02/2014 22:01

I agree with pp saying the sideways peace and big eyes look has come from Japan, though I bet most teen girls don't realise.

The girls there go to special booths called purikura where they can have their selfies taken, are auto-photoshopped to be slimmer/air brushed/eyes made bigger, and then personalise them with horrifying amounts of sparkles/love hearts/glowing text. The peace symbol thing is obligatory.

So, count your lucky stars we don't have this here. Grin

Shoopshoop2 · 28/02/2014 22:46

Off to open one tomorrow berry Wink

ChubbyKitty · 01/03/2014 01:43

Captain I remember doing my make up like Alex from A Clockwork Orange and wearing a bowler hat and looking away from the camera like I was deep in philosophical thought. Blush

I was such a twat. Also didn't selfies use to be myspace poses? Or was that just us?Grin

SnowBells · 01/03/2014 01:50

They probably idolize some people in the media (TOWIE and soap stars... hint hint). Someone should point out to them that these are Z-list celebs, and the real deal never wear that much make up and are often au natural...

Theodorous · 01/03/2014 07:21

Nice to see so much mocking and judging. Funny how on MN certain types of people are fair game to be laughed at but not others. Anyone rich, preened or Muslim is fair game. Anything else and a ridiculous disproportionate amount of offence is taken. If the waitress had fitted into the MN ideal laughing at her would have been frowned upon.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/03/2014 07:33

The only issue I would have with the look you describe OP is that it's high maintenance.
I was a teen in the late 80s so I have my own shocking photo evidence. Grin
But compared with other "looks" The TOWIE look is expensive: hair extensions, fake tan, dental veneers, false nails/ lashes all cost quite a bit so are out of the reach of many ppl.
It also saddens me a little that young women prioritise spending on that she very often they don't have a lot of money, or certain,y claim to not have a lot, what with requiring benefits. (ime)
But as a look. It's just. Aloof I guess. We all have preferences don't we.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/03/2014 07:34

A look.Not Aloof

Birdsgottafly · 01/03/2014 07:49

"Funny how on MN certain types of people are fair game to be laughed at but not others. Anyone rich, preened or Muslim is fair game. "

I've never seen that on MN.

It's the TOWIE look that gets the piss taken out of it, or wearing Uggs, or most WC "fashion", which I see a lot of being in Liverpool.

I'm glad this thread has gone the way it has, usually it gets very insulting, as though, Teens/Women who like these looks/trends are of less intelligence or morally inferior.

Following a look, doesn't make you a "type", a few months later and you can have a completely different "look".

That is the best bit of fashion, it's changeable (except for some plastic surgery and tattoos).

Philoslothy · 01/03/2014 08:14

I have a daughter who is cultivating this look . Back combs her hair, eyeliner , buys this white paint for her teeth, no fake tan yet but there is time. She is also averagely intelligent and attends a secondary modern .

I love her to bits, I suspect she is every MNers nightmare.

AndyWarholsBanana · 01/03/2014 08:16

I found a photo of me in my 1st year at uni (1987) after my friend and I had stumbled across a salon doing 2 perms for a fiver. I looked like Leo Sayer Blush Our 2 male flat mates would follow us round singing "Yoooooo make me feel like dancin". We didn't find it amusing.

Ihavemyownname · 01/03/2014 08:16

I do not get the look either and im only 21.
I see it a waste of time and money then once the look is established the wasted time to manetaine the look for the rest of the day/evening. Its sad really becusae some are naturally very pretty and the fact that some think they have to look like this this to feel equal amounguest there peer's is really sad

Lj8893 · 01/03/2014 08:17

I do the bun thing, but in a messier way. My mum (in her 50s) always tells me how much it suits me and wishes I would wear my hair like it more often, so its not just a teen thing!
I also have fake nails but that's because mine are ruined by biting them.
I occasionally wear false eyelashes and very occasionally wear fake tan.

I wish I could afford veneers!!

Lj8893 · 01/03/2014 08:18

Oh and I pencil in my eyebrows!!

Philoslothy · 01/03/2014 08:20

I sure that teenagers don't have veneers.

My dd attempts the eyebrow thing, although we are quite strict about wearing makeup so it is a look just for her bedroom and the 758 photos she takes of herself everyday .
