I appreciate that not all young ladies adopt this look (my own DD being one of them) but I couldn't help feeling a bit skiffing through my DS's Instagram last night at the endless duck face pout selfies of young ladies he goes to school with who all look exactly the same because of this current "uniform". It just made me feel a bit depressed. I'm 48 but when I was young we had a bit more diversity and of course we were au naturel. AIBU?

Actually Theodesauras, when I read the post about the DH being rude to the waitress, I thought "What a twat". But with a wife who "couldn't stop laughing" they are probably suited to each other. I don't think that is anything to do with mumsnet, that's just twattish behaviour.

Morning where does it say that Konky's DP was rude to the waitress? She said that he was muttering to her about the waitress. Are people not allowed to have a giggle with each other at restaurants any more then?

Oh, I am sorry, I just re-read it. I read it as if the DH asked the waitress why he had a sheep pinned on her head. As I'm sure you'll agree, that would have been quite rude, especially with his wife then laughing uncontrollably.

If he was just muttering to his wife, then that obviously makes a big difference! I will read more carefully in future

My dd1 was recently bullied as she "looks weird" and doesn't dress "like normal people" she is 12 and they only ever see her in school uniform but she likes to dress in a rockabilly fashion like us and all our family friends when she is out of school. It was totally her choice of how she dresses and she chooses her clothes and I was so proud of her for standing up and saying that she'd rather be different rather than following the towie/faux hunting set that the kids seem to favour around here.

I just know that if my hair was long enough for a doughnut I would just make a hash if it. One gust of wind and I would be walking down the street hair flying with mesh foam thing in full view.

I have 17 year old twin dds. They're both into the lazy natural look. One of the things we find very funny though is the racist comments that dd1 gets (she is olive skinned due to Spanish background), they'll call her names to do with her colour and then turn up at the school prom ten shades darker! Most odd.

I might just let her try the doughnut look on my hair once, I just can't believe the doughnut ring won't show because I have fine hair.

my friends dd has been sporting fake tan for years the dd had her own towels and bedsheets that were a lovely creasote colour my friend was fed up of her other towels getting filthy , I like the bun it is neat and not all over the place like the pineapple

I see a lot more Mums of my age group rocking the creosote, big hair, big lashes white teeth look, round here than the kids though. They don't do the peace sign on FB, just the selfies and the trout pout.

Every culture has messed around with themselves, whether it's heavy eyeliner, Egyptian style, or a bone/claw inserted somewhere, or just body painting, changing our look is something that we have always done.

There is no individual look, Lady GaGa comes close occasionally, but even my Gothic DD relies on those gone before her for inspiration, in the same way my Spray Tanned other DD's do.

Regardless of what you wear, you then look to join your respective tribe at times, Festivals, Concerts, Science Fiction Conventions etc.

We all fit in, or stand out somewhere.

It's the clothes that I found the most frustrating, they would have to be binned.

It was the one aspect that made my middle DD rethink her colours, or both her and what she was wearing.

I'm glad that she didn't go down the heavy subbed use that I did in the 80's/90's though.
