I appreciate that not all young ladies adopt this look (my own DD being one of them) but I couldn't help feeling a bit skiffing through my DS's Instagram last night at the endless duck face pout selfies of young ladies he goes to school with who all look exactly the same because of this current "uniform". It just made me feel a bit depressed. I'm 48 but when I was young we had a bit more diversity and of course we were au naturel. AIBU?

I was a Goth in my yoof but was totally crap at it. I had the black / tie dyed tasseled skirts, long split ended purple hair, black nail polish, dark red lipstick, loads of black eyeliner etc but try as I might I always preferred Bananarama to The Cure and was too bloody cheerful and fond of carbs to really nail that tortured artistic look

chubbykitty the difference between selfies and myspace poses were that we didn't have snazzy phones with front-facing cameras, so you had to hold your camera high and as far away as possible (hard if you have t-rex arms like me!) and then pout.

Also have flash on full blast so you looked suitably pale and interesing with no nose if you went too far iirc

I love Snog, Marry, Avoid on BBC3. They strip off all the make up and fakery and uncover the natural beauty. It's so nice.

The strips really do whiten your teeth in quite a different way from bicarb pastes, etc.
I've had to stop recently as I was teetering on visible from space territory...
That was after only about 10 days use

I agree. They all look like 45 year old drag queens. Whereas if they toned it down a bit on the fake tan and the ridiculous eyebrows they'd look exactly like what they are - fresh faced lovely looking young women. I'm not against full make-up at all, but it's supposed to make you look better, not worse.

It's the clothes that I found the most frustrating, they would have to be binned.

It was the one aspect that made my middle DD rethink her colours, or both her and what she was wearing.

I'm glad that she didn't go down the heavy subbed use that I did in the 80's/90's though.

Every culture has messed around with themselves, whether it's heavy eyeliner, Egyptian style, or a bone/claw inserted somewhere, or just body painting, changing our look is something that we have always done.

There is no individual look, Lady GaGa comes close occasionally, but even my Gothic DD relies on those gone before her for inspiration, in the same way my Spray Tanned other DD's do.

Regardless of what you wear, you then look to join your respective tribe at times, Festivals, Concerts, Science Fiction Conventions etc.

We all fit in, or stand out somewhere.
