Dog on the sofa

Why?

OP posts:
SofaCanary · 28/02/2014 10:15

My boys are old and one is horribly arthritic so they use my Reebok step (remember them, all the rage in the 90s) to help them hop up onto the sofa for snuggles and cuddles. It works like a charm!

ExcuseTypos · 28/02/2014 10:23

Our Jack Russell is allowed on the sofa as she looks so cold and lonely on the floor.

She has a little blanket that she is supposed to lie on, but usually ends up snuggled up to me or Dh.

dizhin79 · 28/02/2014 11:15

absolutely not unreasonable! We don't allow our dog on the sofa at all, she has her own large need cushion on the floor, we have a long haired Collie and would permanently be covered in hair or brushing everything!

What I do find unreasonable is when friends come round with their dogs who, at their own house are allowed everywhere (even in bed) they let their dog jump up on our furniture Shock Angry Grrrr, not only do I find that rude, they know we don't allow our and it makes our dog really anxious as she knows it's not the rules in this house!

liquidstate · 28/02/2014 11:16

Absolutely not! And mine is not allowed upstairs either. Never on beds. They are dogs not humans. This is regardless of the fact my dog spends most days rolling in muck at the farm. If he were a proper house dog it would still be the same rules. He has his own bed (and very expensive it was!) for lying down indoors.

We don't own a cat but if we did it would be treated the same.

HadABadDay2014 · 28/02/2014 11:24

Cat goes on the table, I spray the table with dettol before we eat and after.

Crowler · 28/02/2014 11:33

We have this argument every night. Dog says "let me on the sofa" we say no. We get into a heated debate.

LOL.

We don't have a dog, but I did allow our previous dog to get on the sofa. I can't understand the point in having a dog if you don't get to snuggle with them while watching TV. ?

Binkyridesagain · 28/02/2014 11:37

My Staffie puppies are curled up on the sofa with me, its lovely, they're babies they need cuddles. The only problem is they have to cuddle right next to me or on top of me which means I can't move. Good excuse not to do any housework.

My Border collie thinks he's a fur stole sometimes, and will lie on the back of the sofa wrapped around your neck.

Crowler · 28/02/2014 11:37

They keep you very warm, dogs do.

SelectAUserName · 28/02/2014 11:43

Really? I presume this was tongue-in-cheek. Either that or you didn't enjoy taking your dog for walks, training it, having it lie at your feet, going on holiday with it...all the things that are the "point" of having a dog without having to share a sofa with one.

Birdsgottafly · 28/02/2014 11:43

Every dog, mainly German Shepherds, have liked to get as muddy as possible, usually in a smelly swampy mud puddle, so there has been no chance of them going anywhere but in their assigned, easily washable bed.

Growing up, we had a very sweet King Charles who hated dirt and wouldn't go out in the rain etc.

She would try to get in the bath with you and wanted drying with a hair dryer, so she snuggled with one of us, wether in bed or on the couch.

likeit · 28/02/2014 11:45

No idea. Find it gross personally!

Dwerf · 28/02/2014 11:46

My dog will clamber up and take up half the sofa snuggle up with me, but isn't allowed upstairs on the beds, weirdly he never tries to sit on the armchairs. The cats howver seem to sit where they please, because they are cats and I am staff.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 28/02/2014 11:49

I'm pretty sure that's why it's called FURniture.

I love doggie cuddles on the sofa. DH is far grubbier than the dogs, so if I were to ban the dogs on the basis of dirt, I would have to ban DH too. Not sure he'd be impressed.

Muddiboots · 28/02/2014 11:50

yep, he likes dd and I to sit together so he can go in the middle (his two favorite people). Then growls for attention if you dont stroke him (dominance theory people would have a field day with that but in fact he is a really submissive dog and knows he will get told off if he barks but if he growls we laugh and stroke him!)

CMOTDibbler · 28/02/2014 11:55

We bought beige leather sofas because animal hair and dirt is easily wiped off. Right now cmotdog is sprawled the full length of the 3 seater sofa and evilcat is occupying a chair.
For balance, the chickens and rabbit are only allowed to sit on the sofa on a towel.

teenagetantrums · 28/02/2014 11:55

I dont have a dog, but regularly have three visiting dogs, they are all allowed on my sofas doesn't bother me at all. I have two cats who go everywhere, sofas. work surfaces, tables, I don't see the problem, I do clean before I cook and eat, im sure the animals are cleaner than my teenagers. the cats know not to jump on the work surfaces when im cooking there.

Squirrelsmum · 28/02/2014 11:57

The wolfhound sneaks on after everyone has gone to bed.
DH is mildly allergic so Im happy they are allowed in at all.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 28/02/2014 11:58

Because he loves it and deserves it and when I'm too tight to put the heating on in the evening when the DCs are in bed he keeps me warm.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 28/02/2014 11:59

WOLFHOUND!

Lovely, lovely dog. I thought my grey was big but we met a wolfhound last summer and he made our Bill look like a chihuahua.

desertmum · 28/02/2014 12:22

I have four - they are all allowed on the sofa and if they want, we have throws on which we remove when people come over; and they sleep on my bed (not all four - whoever gets there first!). Cats walk over kitchen counters - isn't that what anti-bacterial spray was invented for ? If people don't want to come to my house because of my dogs that's not a problem for me. I prefer my animals to a lot of humans anyway. Grin A bit of dirt from a muddy paw won't hurt you - but I do draw the line at licking - no licking allowed, mainly because they do all like to eat a bit of poo, or rancid goat, or hedgehog or whatever else they find on their long walks through the countryside.

I have a leather sofa and a tiny non shedding dog, he's welcome on the sofa. Smile

sisterofmine · 28/02/2014 12:38

i cannot stand it when dogs climb all over you, and i dont like it when they are on the furniture.

We have cats and i feel the same about them, they arent allowed on the furniture or upstairs.
