AIBU?

To expect my induction on Friday to be horrific

I was 7 days overdue with my 2nd baby on Sunday. My 1st baby was 12 days overdue, went into labour naturally, back to back, ventouse, traumatic delivery etc. etc. I went to the hospital today for a sweep but it could not be done as my cervix was posterior. I have polyhydramnias (too much fluid) with this pregnancy so baby has only just dropped head down into my pelvis after being breech throughout.

I have been talking into getting booked in for an induction on Friday at 12 days only. I am petrified as I have never known anyone who has had a good induction - all have tales of days in hospital, excruciating pain and often a c section anyway.

I am starting to think I should just kick up a fuss and try to just go straight for a c section even though it's not something I would want.

I had an epidural with my 1st baby and cannot image going though all the interventions I did without one so am really scared of having to have painful procedures without adequate pain relief. I even find vaginal exams excruciating when in labour.

Any advice? I cannot sleep due to this worry. I just want it all to be over now.

I am nervous but no more so than I would be even facing a spontaneous labour. It's very different to how I planned it to be (nice, calm homebirth, minimal intervention) but I am just so excited to know my baby will be by the weekend!

How are you feeling now?

My induction ended in EMCS. I had an epidural before my waters were broken and the induction itself wasn't too bad in terms of pain, apart from one point when the epidural syringe ran out and needed changing. It was agony so don't even consider not having an epidural right from the start. But I couldn't feel at all when i pushed..... hence the section. If i had my choice again i would have opted for the semi-elective cs.

My induction was pretty awful and after 3 days ended in emcs. Definitely get epidural sited before the synto drip. We had to stop the synto after 30 mins and prep me for emcs so it was handy already having epidural in place.

Hope it goes well for you. I was induced for my second delivery. Pessary at 11am, labour from 7pm which quickly intensified. Got to hospital at 11pm told only 4cm dilated and had the pessary removed. Crossed the corridor and was crossing my legs as I thought I was going to wee myself. DS arrived an hour later, I hadn't even gotten my dress off! By 13 days late, with a toddler too I couldn't wait for him to come. One major benefit of induction is that at least you're on a schedule and know that by the very latest when your baby will be here. Also whoever is looking after your eldest can be there. My Mum had been on standby for weeks and was much easier to plan than the anytime dash! Best wishes!

Def get epidural if you have the drip as it's harsh. 5 hours from start of drip (vbac. So wasn't allowed pessary) 14 mins of pushes and episiotomy and out she came. Epidural was put in about ten mins after drip startedas was so intense. Good luck

This is a great thread! (Not read all the posts but first page). My induction was horrific, but gives me hope that if I ever have to have another, it might be ok!

dd was my 5th pg. She was induced at 41.5 weeks (I had delivered one ds at 36.3 weeks - posterior - and ds at 27 weeks but he was too poorly to survive).

I was terrified on every level. Went in at about 10am and had a pessary. Not much happened to be honest but we had a good walk at lunchtime. At teatime a registrar came along and said he'd rupture the membranes but I didn't like his attitude and declined.

I think I had another pessary.

At about 8ish my waters broke fore and hind. But there was no movement vis the cervix which was about 1/2mm. They said they would put up a syntocynon drip and I said fine, no problem, but not until you put up an epidural which they agreed to. Whilst the epidural was being put in place the contractions started and they didn't bother with the drip. It was very quick from then - about 90 minutes - and there considerable shock that I seemed to have gone from a standing start to fully dilated in about 20 minutes. DD arrived just before midnight. She was 8.13 and had an apgar score of 9+. No stitches, no particular pain, just a perfect ending to a very long journey.

Good luck OP - sure all will be well. Thanks

Just to add to my positive post earlier, DH was sent home at about 10pm as nothing had started. I was upset at the time and worried he'd miss it (hospital an hour away), but in hindsight it was fine as he was back at 9am the following morning when the contractions had just started.

Once the contractions got going, the pessary was removed. I went and had a bath on the ward, which was lovely, but started to slow my contractions down, so I got out.

In the delivery room I was free to move around as much as I wanted and be in any position. In fact I was encouraged to move around more, but I just wanted to stay on all fours on the bed with my head down!

I also didn't have my waters broken - DS was born in his sac! That was the part I was worried about, so because I was progressing quickly, they said that they didn't need to do it.

OP I hope all goes smoothly for you Flowers

Positive induction story here...second baby (traumatic first birth) induced at 42 weeks. Had one pessary and started labour gradually on antenatal ward with lots of lovely ladies. Labour progressed quickly and they removed pessary at 9pm (i insisted on gas and air for that) and dd was born in her sac at 12:26am not even time for an epidural. It was a v positive experience and v quick recovery...good luck OP!

my induction was fine too.

i was 2 weeks overdue, had pessary put in in the early afternoon, contractions started about an hour later. had all the normal labour pains while dilating and if ds hadn't got well and truly stuck needing forceps and the an emcs (he was back to back and was too big to fit through my pelvis, poor boy had a dent around his head for a week after) it would have been a normal delivery.

Nice to see lots of positive stories. Tomorrow is d-day, not sure wether to spend today doing some housework and getting organised or just sit, relax and mm all day!

Am really hoping they give me a time in the morni g. Good chance I could call and they have had some women come in over night so will ave to wait until they are less busy. Fingers crossed. I just want to get on with it now.

I've had 2 inductions.

First time was 12 days over, got given a pessary at 7pm, dh sent home at 10pm but i was in a labour room on my own so was sort of ok. 7.30am waters broken & put in drip. Dd arrived at 10.24am. Second degree tear but all done on gas & air, she was back to back but turned early one.

Second time was 15 days late, pessary fell out (!) but i was in early labour anyway so just waited in the induction wing for a room to become free in delivery suite. Waters broke at 9am, left till 11 to see if contractions would kick in. They didn't so waters broken at 11am. Ds arrived at 1pm after 5 mins of pushing. Gas & air again, back to back all the way through.

I was totally elated after ds's birth because i didn't tear. Was on the edge of suggesting to dh we had another immediately! Grin

Good luck! I dreaded induction number 2 but it was totally different to the 1st.

I was induced with my son at 39+3 because they thought my hind waters had gone. The drip was put in at 3pm, i had my first contraction at 4.25pm, my waters broke at 4.30pm and he was born at 5.10pm. Just over 2 hours start to finish. No time for pain relief and honestly, it was ok. So much so i'm considering requesting an elective induction for number two because i've been warned he/she may come v quickly and i'd rather not be caught short.

You'll be fine, just focus on the outcome. Good luck!

Floaty, I would eat lots and sleep. My induction was very long (in Friday evening and DS finally born Monday afternoon) and I was shattered by then. Hardly any sleep and hospital food not great. Hopefully yours will be lovely and quick but I'd make the most of your day athome to rest and store up some energy.

How are you Op?

Report

Thanks Oriunda, decided that the baby won't care if the ironing pile stays where it is, and the kitchen isn't immaculate, and if my ds bedroom is still untidy. I've rested up, stocked my hospital bag with bottled water, bananas and chocolate. Just had a huge portion of my fave dinner (it felt like the last supper!). Am going to watch the soaps and then hit the hay.

That was an incredibly long induction you had? Was it your first baby?

Hope MrsSB is ok!

I was induced with my only DC.

Only 5 hours of labour on the plus side. With pethidene.

It was however, 5 hours of unending agony (when I see or hear of people having tea and toast during their labour while merrily chatting with their midwife or DP it makes me Envy.

But I only spent 2 days in hospital. It would have been less but I contracted some bug they wanted to be sure the antibiotics were killing off before sending me home.
