AIBU?

To find this offensive

As I was leaving my neurology appointment, I have epilepsy, the receptionist loudly said to her colleague "I nearly had a fit the other night when I saw the state of the house".

To me wrong in many ways. Firstly, wrong terminology secondly, demeaning to people who have SEIZURES, could be upsetting for those newly diagnosed plus just generally inappropriate.

I'm offended on behalf of desks everywhere. I'm sitting at one right now and pale in horror at the thought of my poor desk reading this as I type. It's deskist and promotes violence towards desks. You should be ashamed of youself OP. Think of the DESKS!!!

No I'm not!!!

wow, if you are this sensitive don't be surprised if no-one dares talk to you.

terms like 'mental' and 'spastic' as everyday language do indeed belong in the bin of past decades, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere. Getting upset at this seems just a teensy bit over the top.

As someone who has had their biscuit stolen out of my hand by a dog, I find that offensive...

You need to get over yourself.

Yes you are right, the fact that you are offended is all that matters.
I'm lucky I guess that I don't get offended by most of the shit that seem to piss people off on mn,but then even if I was who fucking cares?
I can't beleive you are so offended by this you have come onto mn to moan about it,get over it,move on,and forget about it.
Why didn't you confront her if she offended you so much?

Agree YABU.

Up to you whether you feel offended, and you own that feeling etc but there's not a lot to be done is there? It is a saying, she wasn't directing it at you, loads of people say it not meaning offence. Let it go I say Smile

Is fit the new brainstorm? We had had to stop using that at school incase it insulted people with epilepsy.

Joke btw. Not sure why I didn't confront tbh. I am not like that. I had just had bad news and felt very deflated

Yes but you haven't the SO WHAT. You're offended. Good for you, its a free (ish) country.
But why should anyone else care that you are offended? You have no rational basis for offense, having chosen to interpret a word/phrase to purposefully find offense, for some reason of your own. But so what? What do you want here?

I won't apologise for being offended.as everyone finds different things offensive
No one expects you to apologise but you did come on and ask IABU and yes, you are.

I'm sorry to hear that Thanks

Do you think that's possibly why you're massively over reacting?

I think it's a hilarious gaffe if I look at it from the perspective of a patient, and I probably would have laughed out loud. :)

Well I was offended and that is what matters

The only person it matters to is you. You are the one feeling upset and it all appears to be negatively affecting your mood.

You are the only one who can change your mindset.

Even the daily sodding fail wouldn't pick this one up.

SauvignonBlanche · 21/02/2014 14:25

Sorry you're feeling bad, that's enough to cloud anyone's judgement.
Hope things look up for you soon. Flowers

Offensive is asking you if it's ok that I chuck my washing in the bath with you if you are havinga fit at the time.

You will have every right to be offended at that (unless it was you who suggested it ,like a mate of mine once did) but just because someone was having a conversation with someone else THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU and mentioned it..you are being very very unreasonable.

Yeah you have some bad news - not everyone is out to offend you.

I notice on this site that posters use the phrase threw a paddy for someone who is having a hissy fit. Do you think, that as an Irish poster, I should be offended by this. I never really get the chance to be offended but thought this might be something that I could get offended by.
