To think that P&C spaces in supermarket car parks

AIBU to think that where there is a pedestrian pavement down the middle of a supermarket car park, it would make far more sense to have the parent and child parking in a well lit area further away from the entrance. This would mean that the spaces would not get clogged up by drivers without children too lazy to find a space, and in some car parks could be in an area with less traffic.

There is a lack of disabled spaces in many places. Turning them into P and C spaces would be a bad move. A relevant point.

This.

I am also not sure that more P and C spaces are needed at all. I can understand an argument for making ALL spaces wider but I wouldn't increase the number of P and C spaces specifically

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 15:40

No one on here has said "raze the disabled spots to the ground in favour of p&c. Immediately."

There are lots of disabled bays. Rightly. So there is space. It isn't that the car parks are too small. So why can't there be more p&c as well?

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 15:41

Because people who don't fall into a category for whom spaces are designated also need to be able to park somewhere. The more 'special' spaces we provide the harder it makes it for everyone else!

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 15:42

No, I made the point that there were more disabled spots in my area, which was ignored.

MollyHooper · 20/02/2014 15:42

My mum is a blue badge holder and we always have trouble finding spaces.

Too MANY disabled spaces is a good thing. It means the people who have an actual need for bigger spaces are looked after.

It's tough luck if some parents are inconvenienced really.

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:43

Please show is where someone has asked for disabled spaces to be turned into P&C spaces? Because it certainly hasn't happened on this thread.

The (great!) idea was for P&C spaces to be further away so they could be used for their intended purpose and not be abused.

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 15:44

sirzy but there only need be 10-15 more p&c spaces, so not unreasonable I don't think.

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:44

And Sirzy, making all spaces wider would be great, but most car parks don't have the space or money to do this, but moving the existing spaces further away wouldn't create less spaces for the masses, and would solve the problem.

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 15:45

There doesn't NEED to be any P and C spaces. You may like more but thats different from NEEDING them

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 15:45

I agree that P and C spaces at the back is the best solution, but then you get people complaining that their children have to actually walk to get to the shop!

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:46

Sirzy, I disagree, I think some people do need them. When P&Chas been full a friend of mine with newborn twins and a 2 year old goes elsewhere, because she needs the space to put her double buggy together.

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:46

I'd rather walk a bit than struggle to get my carseat into a car, possibly damaging my car and others.

notso · 20/02/2014 15:46

curious so your example wasn't real? Confused you are annoyed about something that didn't even happen.

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 15:46

molly it is a good thing!! No one is disputing that. I think maybe I live in an area with a bigger area allocated to them? Genuinely as well, I've not seen anywhere else with as many.

I just think more p&c is also good from a safety POV as I think people tend to drive more carefully round p&c areas.

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:47

It did happen, but people parking close and struggling to get the children in isn't a rare occurrence.

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 15:48

So curious she NEVER goes anywhere where the carpark doesn't have P and C spaces?

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 15:48

I agree that P and C spaces at the back is the best solution, but then you get people complaining that their children have to actually walk to get to the shop!

That's not been mentioned here I don't think. I'm sure you're right, some people always do, but by and large I think more p&c would be really beneficial.

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 15:50

it has been mentioned on many threads on this topic before. Apparently the child won't be seen and get run over - obviously some people have never heard of holding hands!

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:50

Nope, depending on the car park she can sometimes park in a far off corner on a quiet day, but if its a busy day she doesn't risk it and her DH gets stuff later.

But a trip out to the supermarket can break up a hard day, so it's unfortunate.

Braganza · 20/02/2014 15:51

runningwillpower has it right - surely the default is that you park in whichever space the supermarket has asked if it's free. If it's not, park anywhere. There is simply more chance of a p&c being free if away from the entrance.. All the better if there is a traffic free route to the door. Disabled spaces have a reason to be near the door, so should be. No-one who has children should park in a disabled spot in preference to a p&c spot, and vice versa, but if none are free, it's surely park where you can.

OP posts:
curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:51

And actually Sirzy, very few shipping centres, retail parks or supermarkets round here don't have P&C...

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 15:51

Shopping! Not shipping.

notso · 20/02/2014 15:51

The issue isn't with P&C spaces or lack of them it is with other peoples bad parking.

In any case it is just a bit annoying, it isn't worth all the twisted knickers.

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 15:52

Very few here do have them, and certainly no tourist attractions or town centres or anything like that. I can only think of 2 places other than supermarkets which offer P and C spaces

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 15:52

you don't need to remove the car seat - just the child - car seats aren't good for small babies to be strapped in all the time

I said a normal space - not a normal space with a badly parked person next to it - which can easily be avoided by parking on an end space
