To be annoyed with docs surgery?

I am 6 weeks post partum having had my 5th dc in january, so I booked my 6 week check. The receptionist asked what my appointment was for when I rang and I said my 6wk check and to get the depovera injection.
She said the nurse cannot do it without me having not seen a doctor. but when I asked to see a gp, she said there were no available appointments prior to seeing the nurse. This was nearly 3 weeks ago.

So I was told to ring in early day of 6 week check to see if doctor can fit me in as an emergency before the nurse.

I am just flabbergasted that contraception is seen as so unimportant and hard to recieve and wondering why a gp must see me first when I have had the shot before and know the risks.

Also what contraception can the nurse actually give to me should I not be able to get an appointment with gp?

Obviously I want to be getting back to my sex life but do not trust condoms as a regular form of contraception.
Is it assumed all women remain sexless up to the 6wk point?

Seriously how hard is it to get the nhs services I require

Blimey. We have to see the doctor for our 6 week check, the nurse just weighs and measures the baby then we see the doctor to discuss any issues afterwards, maybe this is the case at your surgery too.

There are procedures that need to be adhered to regarding certain medication for both your safety and to cover the doctors back and people have to realise this.

Trust me any surgery would rather you just saw one HCP than take up 2 appointments.

Your 6 week check should be with a GP! It's not just a BP check. That is appalling.

I think you have the wrong end if the stick and have to see a doctor and a nurse at your 6 week check.

I was told it was an appointment for me not my baby. I really don't see what the appointment is for tbh

Well girl you are something else if my DH had come near me 6 weeks after either of my DC i would have toughen a baby grow at him . Good for you hope your hubby appreciates you your a keeper lol. I think speaking to your health visitor may well be your beat bet . But yes doc appointments can be a nightmare.

My six week check was with a nurse. She's a nurse practitioner who specialises in contraception and post natal (among other things) she used to be a midwife. Your scenario seems strange op as if she was a specialist nurse you wouldn't need to see a gp first.

No 8 week check is for your baby with the hv if your area does it.
6 week check is for you should be with a go to check your health, any stitches etc.

pinkpaws Don't know what has got into me tbh, just want to rip his clothes off every chance I get lately but I know I don't want anymore babies as a consequence

Round here your baby has a six week check with a GP at the same time as you have a post natal.

Op just ask your nurse if you've had it before she might just give it to you

Here we see the gp at 6 weeks and they check mother and baby. And discuss contraception.

I have had it before spotty at my last surgery but receptionist said as I haven't had it before at this surgery I will require a doctors appointment.
What contraception can a nurse give besides this that can be done whilst I'm there as im shitting a brick about becoming pregnant again ?
We are fine using condoms but they are expensive and like I said they are not fail proof enough for me to continue with alone.

It seems a rubbish way of doing it. How about a walk in sexual health clinic? They will do it for you, although I understand with a six week old you don't have time to be running airing all over the place!

I went, no they couldn't do it.
All that happened is blood pressure was taken and I was asked about mood and general well being.
Was told an IUD might be best and if I want that, too get booked in with gp for double appointment which I'll need to ring up before 8:30 each day to see if I can be fitted in. Grrr phoning up mid school run routine with 5 children is hard enough but to actually get a short notice appointment in times that fit in with school & nursery runs should be fun!
Then there is walking to said run like john Wayne with a sore crutch
Was told considering I have 5 dc it shouldn't hurt , well let me be the judge of that

Have you tried asking your HV for advice? I couldn't get a GP appointment for contraception for 2.5 months after DD was born, but my HV put me onto a contraception specialist HV who sorted me out about a week later.

No I haven't tried that but I will do if I cannot get an appointment soon. If all else fails I will have to get down to the family planning clinic, although I will stick out like a sore thumb being 30 around teenagers half my age

Isn't it recommended that you avoid sex for the first 6 weeks for health reasons? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

I am not sure strawberry I have 5 dc and going by what I read, all info varies. I know that it isn't good to have sex whilst still bleeding due to infection being introduced, but my lochia had already stopped at 2 weeks.

I started when I felt ready which each birth and each time span varied depending on my physical & emotional state.

At my surgery the gp checks mother and baby so a double slot is needed and this needs to be booked well in advance. I always book it when I register my dc at the surgery at about 1 week old.

It seems my new surgery is as shit as my last one
About to phone up soon to get this booked aswell as 2 of my children's imms, I'll let you know how I get on.
And thats only if someone actually answers the phone

It does seem they're shit you can go to hospital to have an iud/ius fitted round here you just ring up the unit and ask or our doctors run a walk in sexual health clinic once a week or there's the clinic in the nearest big town. (Btw we're pretty rural so not like a big city where there's lots of services). Argh I could go on. Your surgery is beyond shit.
