To be completely freaked out that we've not had a winter

Seriously, I'm weirded out.

2 very light frosts the whole winter. Not cold enough to put the heating on hardly.

I don't remember a winter like this in 40 years.

Yes, the news stories are all about the terrible floods but I've heard nothing to explain why there's been no wintry weather.

I was £299 in credit on my gas bill last week. I'll take the lack of snow thanks Smile

Have been there choosing to heat or eat and made damn sure that I paid in as much as I could during the Spring and Summer.

Fannydabbydozey · 19/02/2014 21:46

Anyone else still have their summer geraniums in pots? I've even got last years lobelia growing in one pot...

And my banana plants are shooting out new green leaves... Never had that happen before late April or May.

Wingdingdong · 19/02/2014 21:48

YANBU. In London, and I've not had to wear a coat much. A waterproof jacket, yes... But not a warm coat.

Pipbin · 19/02/2014 21:49

I know the last couple of winters have been very snowy and cold, but I can't remember any winters (in the south) when the snow has lasted for more that a couple of days.

I'm very disappointed to not have had a proper cold winter as this is the first time in 10 years I've lived in a house with proper heating.

That said, there is still plenty of time, I've know there to be snow on my birthday in April.

Wingdingdong · 19/02/2014 21:50

And yes, we have stocks still flowering from last summer. Quite a few trees starting to blossom too.

But the last couple of years have been weird, it generally doesn't snow till after the first blossom and last year it snowed in April. None at all yet though.

LaGuardia · 19/02/2014 21:52

I should imagine the residents of the Somerset Levels are just dying for some wintry weather Confused

ChaffinchOfDoom · 19/02/2014 21:58

another weird thing -- we found a butterfly a real live happy big red admiral in ds's room yesterday.
How did it get there! in February!

DeWe · 19/02/2014 22:00

We've had a good snow (south England) every year since we moved here 14 years ago until this year. I moved from the north and rarely got any snowfall at all, and 1" was considered amazing.

I want snow!

Ds is already planning on living in the arctic when he grows up. Which won't be compatible with his ambition to be a pilot though.

FourArms · 19/02/2014 22:04

DS1 got hypothermia camping in snow at Easter in 2012.

(Disclaimer: we were fully equipped for the weather, but not for DS1 shunning his silk thermal base layer, polar fleece track suit, hats and gloves and artic standard sleeping bag to sleep nude on the tent floor because he was hot!)

daisychain01 · 19/02/2014 22:04

Daisies? Did I hear my name? Squeeeeee!

We still have half a tank of heating oil, no complaints here!

MyPetMonsterAndMe · 19/02/2014 22:05

I live in Ontario, Canada and you are all welcome to our winter if you'd like it. We've had snow since November and it's so high you can't see around it on the roads. It was -3C today and I can't remember the last time it was above -8C. I don't remember a winter this bad since I was born (I'm 27). I'm dreading when it starts to all melt because the flooding will be horrendus.

poorbuthappy · 19/02/2014 22:05

I can't add anything scientific based but to us it's been 1 of those warmer out than in winters: too cold not to have the heating/wood burner on, but go outside and not need all the layers and coats, scarves & gloves.

And yes last year at Easter (beg of April) last year we went to Disneyland Paris and whilst the sun shine for all 5 days, the temp didn't rise above freezing for the whole time. (Well it didn't feel like it did)

It's all very odd

NeonMuffin · 19/02/2014 22:05

This is what winters were like pre-2009. We hardly had any snow at all here for a long time before that December and then bam... I can remember walking along the street near my house one day and it was so cold my face actually hurt.

I think things come in cycles. We seemed to have a lot of cold winters in the early to mid 90's. I had to walk home from school in about a foot of it in around 94/95.

wadi1983 · 19/02/2014 22:13

iv been.so bloody ill this winter, I am.looking forward to the summer!!!!

BrennanHasAMangina · 19/02/2014 22:13

Mypet I'm in Ontario too (Oakville). It's been hideous but how lovely did it feel outside today? I was almost skipping because it was raining this afternoon!

NeonMuffin · 19/02/2014 22:14

Yes, I think the lack of hard frosts means that bugs and viruses haven't been killed off properly.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/02/2014 22:28

I'm definitely not only talking about only snow - I don't remember a winter where the temperatures weren't low and I didn't have to scrape my windscreen 20/30 times.

I had a woodburner for ten years til I moved in October and the temperature in the house got down to 12/14 for prolonged periods every year. And then I'd be up every morning lighting it - for a time every winter (at least 6 weeks) it was stoked so it never went out.

This year it wouldn't have been on more than a dozen times and not continuously at all.

This is pretty much what I think of southern winters as being like when I was a kid. It barely snowed in London until I was out of my teens - the few times it did are firmly in my memory as they were so novel. But is was colder though, I'm sure. More frosts. I'm in the SW, and I'm sure we've only had three frosty mornings this winter.

KittensoftPuppydog · 19/02/2014 22:34

Me too. In Scotland but hardly worn my winter clothes.

RevoltInParadise · 19/02/2014 22:34

I saw snow drops coming out. Always heralds spring to me!

Jbck · 19/02/2014 22:37

The midges are out in Central Scotland, it's virtually unheard of in February!

squoosh · 19/02/2014 22:41

So warm in Glasgow this evening, had to walk home with my coat swinging open.

WisneaMe · 19/02/2014 22:45

Yes the trees are budding and springs flowers are popping up,I noticed this in mid January very weird but then nature of plants is there thinking it's warm and wet for SE Scotland so must be spring.
Only had the odd dry cold day.
This last week it was snap cold with snow for a day followed by sun the rain, rain and more rain not cold.

Fluffyears · 19/02/2014 22:46

Live near Glasgow and had a snow shower on Friday that didn't lie as ground was wet and had snow a few weeks back but only for an hour or so and has been too wet and mild for it to stay around. I think I've scraped car twice this whole winter and I hate doing that so it's one bonus!

2rebecca · 19/02/2014 22:48

My son was skiing in Scotland last week at half term. I agree that lowland scotland has had little snow and frost though but the hills north of Perth are snowy.
