To be in tears over about the demise of my trusty car?

I've had him ( blue Ka) for 14 years since new, he was my first baby. The first and only thing of any value that I've actually ever owned. we've been through a lot; boyfriends, moves to London, nights out, a million trips to ikea, moonlight flits, headspace drives and he has never once failed to start. And now it's mot day and the results are not good Hmm. And yes I know it's just a load of metal but I am very very sad Confused!

I feel your pain. My 13 year old car has been gradually going downhill for a while now but even though he's been to the garage on many occasions it's pretty much terminal now.

I went to look at other cars last night and will be taking him to be valued tomorrow in part exchange. I bought him before DS1 was born and feel really sad that it's come to this. Sad

I've had my beloved 10 year old Focus since new, it's getting a tad shabby but has still done under 60000 miles.
DH and the kids would love me to replace it but I'm holding out. Too many memories for me to get rid. I totally get it Smile

Aw, YANBU. I still miss Audrey, my first car, even though she was far from trusty by the time we parted company. They hold so many memories.

I cried when I sold my lovely Megan, my first car. It was even worse that I knew she was going to be scrunched. I sat in my new car and couldn't bring myself to drive away for ages - I felt like I should go back and rescue her, say that it had all been a terrible mistake. She was falling to bits by then but I looooooooved her. No other car has meant the same. I feel your pain, OP - but time will heal the worst of it and the fond memories will console you.

I'm long past giving names and genders to cars - but have just had to scrap a reliable runner because of the insane 'system'. And that really does piss me off.

no, it wasn't dangerous. But due to idiot lawmakers who clearly want us all to buy new cars and only from dealers, it had to go off the road when I switch the insurance to the newer one, can't be insured or kept taxed short term except at prohibitive cost, so can't be test driven, so no-one can buy it.

what a waste.

I know how you feel, OP. When my beloved Scirocco Storm was written off, I had to sit in the tow truck and watch it being towed behind me for over a hundred miles. I was in bits... Sad

I can't say it will get easier with time even, OP... but you've got to get through it some how. We could start a group...?

YANBU , I was devastated when my mondeo finally died , we had him from new and he had done nearly 200,000 miles when his gearbox finally gave out . We had 3 months earlier bought a new car and I had refused to trade him in but really couldn't justify the £1000+ it would have cost to repair him .

lying ,same here !why do they always die so far from home , we had to get the AA to tow us back to Kent from Kidderminster .

My beloved Mitsi is in the garage at the moment. 14 years old and 160k miles. I've had to set a limit of £300 for viable repair costs as she's not worth much more than that. :(

Last year I traded my old car in for lovely shiny new flash one.
I cried all the way to the garage - and explained to my car why I was doing it while apologising profusely!!!

I'm well beyond names and genders now as well. When it came to the end for Furgus my 12 year old Focus last month, I restrained myself to a manly pat on the back bumper and telling him it that he it had been a great car. No unnecessary sentiment at all Blush.

I keep patching mine up! I mean, repair costs are dead money anyway whatever the value of the car! My wagon is 18 years old now :)

Oh I'm so glad it's not just me! Special, I agree, there's absolutely nothing wrong with my little car, just stoopid regulation, seems like such a waste when he's still going strong Hmm. Cannot bear to think about the crusher, keep thinking of Toy Story 3!! Its funny, I move house at the drop of a hat but cars, that's a different matter! Perhaps a support group is a good idea Wink. Thanks ladies, I'll console myself with a nice new car, although it will never be the same! Smile

YANBU my poor wee nameless A3 is currently in the bodyshop awaiting a possible death sentence from an insurance engineer after a fuckwit neighbour drove into me at high speed at the weekend.
It's 8 years old and I've had it for over 5 years and has never let me down.
This is the first car I've had since I've been past the "need to fit a pushchair in the boot" stage with the kids, it's registered to me, insured to me and my sentimentality about it is because I got it when the baby days were behind me(had horrendous PND) for a few years, and things were on the up for us as a family.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!
