To not want to go to bloody buggering pirtsmouth?

I have had the day from the pits of hell . Finally got home an hour late and bloody buggering D announces thst tomorrow is a buggering unuversity open day thing.

Portsmouth isn't so bad. Hopefully the sun will be out. It's a bit grim when it's raining and windy and the foghorns are blaring.

I'd love to go to see the mary rose.

Instead i'll have to sit through another lecture getting more and more depressed about not being able to afford to help her through university financially, and working out just how much debt she'll be in at the end, poor thing.

And another set of depressingly foul halls of residence.

And another round of library, studenty, lecturing things. And my feet hurt.

If you've never been here the uni is very near the centre of the city, so if you have any spare time you can easily get to Gunwharf/the dockyard/main shops and Guildhall. From what I remember of my uni open days my mum mainly used to sit in the cafe with a tea and a cake Grin

Go shopping at Gun Wharf. It's a short walk from the Uni and there's lots to do there.

Why on earth are you going with her? If she can't go round an open day on her own, she shouldn't be considering university, and this is the problem with many university students. My parents didn't go with me, and I didn't go with my children. Can't she go with friends; most schools organise trips to Universities for their pupils.

Having a bf who helps out at the uni where he works on open days... it's extremely common for parents to accompany their children - if anything to save the travel costs for the DC!
Why shouldn't you want your parents opinion if you're a close family? :/ It's not always about 'can't'.

Essiebee this is not 'what is wrong with' university students.

My parents accompanied me to open days. They wouldn't have dreamt of interfering with my life whilst I was actually there. But open days (mostly) took place before I was 18 and choosing a university is something that most people would want guidance on.

Easier parents are often invited to university open days now in fact DD1 is 26 and DH took her to open days.

Drop DC off and go to Gunwharfs Quay. There's a cinema there as well as shops. Or if it's sunny go for a wander round Old Portsmouth.
It's a shame parents go now. I can see when my dcs go on open days I'll feel I'm letting them down if I don't if its all geared up to family groups rather than singletons.

Don't go to Commercial Road shopping centre, whatever you do. I love Portsmouth, but it is a shocker of a main shopping area for a city that size.

No one's parents went to open days back in 1985, I still can't get my bead round the idea.

I've been a spare part at a couple of Sixform ones, but CD doesn't really need me.

I sympathise with you, we're off to Huddersfield tomorrow for DD's interview. She has already been offered a place at another Uni and is likely to take it, but still wants to attend this interview just to make sure she has made the right decision. It's a five hour round trip for a half hour interview, but at least we get to call in to see friends and have tea with them. Smile

I live NEAR Portsmouth! It's ok, Gunwharf good suggestion! Generally makes you feel quite cheerful :) As for Uni, don't know, I went to Southampton. There really are worse places to be........ Smile

Another vote for gunwharf, one of my fav places. Also have a yearly ticket for the dockyard and never get bored if going there either.

The White swan was one of my regular hangouts in student days (25+ years ago). That and the Yorkshire Grey. Guildhall Walk was pretty quiet then, it was all little old man pubs in that area, it has changed a lot.
