To get the rage when adults say Ta?

SingingGerbil · 14/02/2014 18:25

First world problem I am aware but this really gives me The Rage. Anyone over about the age of 5 should not be allowed to say this I am looking at you DP. In fact I am not that keen on under fives saying it either.

Phew, just had to get that out Grin

It's a regional thing isn't it?
It's just a word that's said to give thanks. Better than no manners at all. I hate that.

Bowlersarm · 14/02/2014 19:45

YouStay

I'm a southern-wanna-be-northerner.

"Alright chook" sounds fine by me.

RevoltingPeasant · 14/02/2014 19:50

I think it is derived from Old Norse so common in Yorkshire and other Northern dialects.

OP YABU unless all Danish derived words in English give you the rage, such as place names ending in ----thorpe, etc.

Now, what is really irritating is that whingey southern long A, as in paaaarth and glaaaaars.

BringBackBod · 14/02/2014 19:58

Oh dear Revolting
I suspect you're in for it now Grin

VegetariansTasteLikeChicken · 14/02/2014 20:16

YANBU but I find it worse when people teach their children to say it Blush

it's awful... and they are so cute when they say "fanku" why lose that? Grin

ZingSweetApple · 14/02/2014 20:51

I don't know any adult in RL who says that.

nor does my Butler

squoosh · 15/02/2014 02:19

I don't say ta in actual conversation but I do use it to sign off casual work emails.

Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta

squoosh · 15/02/2014 02:20

and Ta.

Periwonkle · 15/02/2014 03:07

I only get "the rage" when people use stupid phrases like "the rage". It is SO affected.

Caitlin17 · 15/02/2014 04:11

It's fine.I use it as does my son to each other , usually "ta very much" often in a fake northern accent.

"Get the rage" however is a ghastly expression.

FirstStopCafe · 15/02/2014 04:18

I don't have a problem with it. Yabu

Catsize · 15/02/2014 04:57

Am Norvan and don't like it. No exceptions for under 5s either. Like vegetarians, I don't like it when people teach their children to say it. A friend of mine knows this and said 'you can't stop toddlers - they will say it anyway'. Not sure why they would, and so far so good. Have gone from 'ebbu' to 'etsu'.

BringBackBod · 15/02/2014 05:59

Yes, I suspect that 'ta' has been around a lot longer than 'get the rage'.
I know which I find more annoying Smile

chebella · 15/02/2014 06:12

I miss 'ta' and 'cheers'....I live abroad and actually get a little frisson of excitement when I get back to the UK and hear some proper dialect after months away. You don't know what you've got til it's gone!

ZingSweetApple · 15/02/2014 06:22

catsize

my kids have never used or heard the word "ta" because nobody around them uses it.

so your friend is wrong. kids will only copy what is "available"
Smile

Nanny0gg · 15/02/2014 07:32

Not only do I say 'Ta', I teach it to babies. And I've been known to say 'Ta-ta' for goodbye too!

ZingSweetApple · 15/02/2014 07:49

ah, but doesn't ta-ta mean goodbye?

I loved Cilla Black saying it on Blind Date!Grin

SpanielFace · 15/02/2014 08:00

I say "Ta", "cheers", "cuppa", "tea" for our evening meal, "spag bol" etc. From the East Midlands, and it's normal around here! So, YABU, and a bit snobby.

saintmerryweather · 15/02/2014 08:14

Im from the SE all my family say it.

Its not as bad as Makes my teeth itch...no it doesnt, your teeth arent fucking itchy

BlueDesmarais · 15/02/2014 08:18

Racist. Nowt wrong with saying 'ta' up North.

SingingGerbil · 15/02/2014 08:27

Oh dear, seems I'm outnumbered Blush. Oh well, I'm from the south west for the poster that asked and also do the paaath, baaath etc which so annoys someone else. Just the way I was taught, my mum would alway correct me otherwise.

OP posts:
TwinkleSparkleBling · 15/02/2014 08:34

I say it. It reminds me of my lovely Nan.

My toddlers both say fanks ponders the fact that my toddlers are more socially acceptable than me according to op
