When I was little and first aware of valentines day I asked my mum if she loved me she didn't get me a card. I was too young to realise myself there were different types of love. She started buying me a card and did until my teens. It was a bit of fun between us.
My dd asked me a similar thing when she was little. So each year I get them a little heart shaped chocolate or something. They usually get out their craft stuff and make me a card. They enjoy it. It's a bit of harmless fun.

YANBU

It's not weird or creepy.

A bit of fun, a bit of affection, a declaration of love... What's so wrong with this?

ExcuseTypos · 14/02/2014 07:46

You've reminded me youmake, my DDs sent DH and I cards when they were little. They did it until they were about 9/10 when they realised what valentines was about. Always homemade and signed!

Grockle · 14/02/2014 07:52

In America, valentines day is about platonic love as much as romance. Everyone gives cards to anyone they want - parents, children, friends, classmates. I know that the roots of valentines day are in romantic love but I like it as a more general thing. I don't see a problem with giving your dc a card.

polythenespam · 14/02/2014 08:02

It's weird.

ashtrayheart · 14/02/2014 08:03

Dsd (16) mum buys her a card and present, it's odd in my opinion!

DrankSangriaInThePark · 14/02/2014 08:03

Yes, it's weird.

Booboostoo · 14/02/2014 08:05

The whole day is daft and it's daft to extend it even further. We have Christmas, birthdays, namedays (a huge deal in many countries), Mother's/Father's days...that's enough!

Sallystyle · 14/02/2014 08:05

It's very American.

My Facebook is full of my American friends posting what they have bought their children for VD.

I find it very strange.

2tiredtocare · 14/02/2014 08:05

I think some of you might be reading a bit too much in to it, that in itself creeps me out.

2tiredtocare · 14/02/2014 08:06

Unless you are giving them cards designed for a lover of course

BitOutOfPractice · 14/02/2014 08:07

I buy mine a funny card and write a daft poem inside plus a little chocolate heart or something. I've always done it. None if us think it's weird or creepy. It's just something we do.

rainbowfeet · 14/02/2014 08:09

I always buy a card & little gift for my 2 & always will Grin

ThePearShapedToad · 14/02/2014 08:13

I think it's sweet! My mother still sends me a valentines card every year signed " ???? " and I pretend to not know who it's from and I'm 30!

It's a bit of innocent fun Smile

My dad bought V day cards, unsigned, for me and my sister from the ages of about 12 to 18. I really liked it as others said, it made us feel like we had received a card, even though we really knew they were from our dad.

firesidechat · 14/02/2014 08:15

I feel that I should somehow think it's cute, but I'm afraid I just think it's weird. Sorry.

Highlandbird · 14/02/2014 08:15

I think it's sweet, I helped my two make a card for DH yesterday, is just an excuse to tell someone you love them surely? I obviously don't think its 'creepy' I think it's a shame anyone would think that Sad
When I was a teenager my friends used to get lots of valentines cards and I never got any so my mum used to write one to me from my horse Grin you lot will probably find that REALLY creepy!!

obviouslyneedsupernanny · 14/02/2014 08:16

I don't see how it's creepy at all.

Bowlersarm · 14/02/2014 08:18

Yabu

I agree with your dh. Weird and creepy.

wishful75 · 14/02/2014 08:20

2tiredtocare

I agree, it creeps me out that anyone could read into it that it is creepy or weird.

op yanbu its bit of fun, harmless and very sweet. I've done it for my 6 year old for the first time this year as her whole class is banging on about who is going to get a card and I don't want her to feel left out. Its not from me as far as she is concerned.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 14/02/2014 08:24

I remember at primary school a girl bought in her card from her parents and I thought it was really strange.

My dad got me one once and put 'from someone who thinks you're really cute' as I'd been moaning that I'd never got one. It literally took me years to work out it was from him and I think it's very sweet as it made my day. I was certain it was a boy down the road I quite liked, luckily I didn't go up to him and embarrass myself

I'm a 'share the love' type person am last year at work I bought everyone one in the office a chocolate heart. Some people were really freaked out by it haha!

If you want to get them a card do, a lot of people do it!

And thanks or reminding me, I can get DP a card on the way home Wink

Bowlersarm · 14/02/2014 08:25

It's creepy because Valentines day is about fancying the pants off someone wrapped up in romantic words and gestures.

Which would be inappropriate directed at your dc.

embouchure · 14/02/2014 08:25

Actually, I've changed my mind. I always used to think it was a bit odd, but VD can be anything you want it to be. If it's used as a day for parents to tell their children they love them then there's nothing wrong with that!

I haven't done it, but I have used it as an excuse to make waffles for breakfast!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 14/02/2014 08:29

Embouchure, one does not need an excuse to make waffles for breakfast Wink

2tiredtocare · 14/02/2014 08:30

No Valentines day is a made up day, its not 'about' anything other than love, the card I got for my kids was for kids saying 'to my little love bugs' not pervy!
