AIBU this young mother should have thought a little harder about what toys to take to the library?

Local studies department of the library all is quiet as people researching their families, local history or looking through old newspapers make quiet notes. The only sound is the hushed whispered request to the librarian. It's always like that there - a little oasis of peace and tranquillity in the middle of a big city.

Enter young mum with small child clad all in pink. Small child is very loud and questioning (but very cute). Eyebrows are raised all around. A shudder of disapproval meanders its way around the gathering. Mum explains loudly to small person that she needs to look at some things in the old newspapers. Small person not impressed (loudly). Neither are crusty researchers.

"I won't be very long", I've bought you some toys to play with. Sighs of relief all round.

Mum roots round in large bag and produces a xylophone. Small child accompanies herself to a rousing chorus of "Winkle, winkle ickle star" several times without once hitting the right note.

The sense of outrage was palpable. I left before the drum came out.

I found it quite amusing but I guess people who'd travelled a long way probably didn't. I can't help but think some books and dolls may have been a better choice than a xylophone.

YANBU about the toys - terrible choice (but secretly giggling a bit at the image!)

But I can't see how the description of 'young mother' is relevant in any way TBH.

SoonToBeSix · 11/02/2014 13:50

Yabu public libraries have moved on and are not all hushed tones. If you want to study you need to go to an academic library.
Our local library has regular toddler song time with bells etc.

Pregnantberry · 11/02/2014 13:51

YANBU, although it made me laugh that one of your complaints was that she didn't hit the right notes playing twinkle twinkle. Grin Maybe people weren't grumbling because she was too loud, but rather that she gave a shoddy performance?

AlpacaLypse · 11/02/2014 13:51

Before I was a parent, my former boss sent me out to buy a Christmas present for his godson. He was a bit annoyed with the child's mother at the time, so instructed me to find a drum and a zylophone...

Morgause · 11/02/2014 13:53

Pink doesn't bother me much either way Caitlin so no insult intended there. And the mum was young - compared to me most people are. Should I have described her as "not old"? It wasn't meant as an insult.

Our library runs a nursery rhyme time for babies and toddlers. And they have instruments :o

it's not like giles from buffy in tweed and running a silent deserted library

Purplepoodle · 11/02/2014 13:57

Lol xylophone in the archives at the library. Guessing the mum was sleep deprived

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 11/02/2014 16:53

I love it! Ok so it perhaps wasn't well thought out, but at least some thought went into it. I guess the mum perhaps wasn't all that familiar with the library - ours has one of those wire and bead toys in the children's area along with numerous jigsaws, paper and crayons. All portable and the staff are more than happy for them to be moved to wherever a parent is working as long as they return them. Or maybe she knew that library perhaps wasn't quite so good with the child side of things so was making a point.

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 11/02/2014 17:03

Why did you need to describe the age at all? Maybe if you'd done it just in the thread itself to 'create atmosphere', fine, but why was it relevant to the thread title?

I'll remember not to take my child to the library just in case I make a bad decision and you decide my age is to blame... Hmm no a xylophone isn't the best idea, but there's every chance a 40-year-old mum would've done the same.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 11/02/2014 17:12

Would you have written 'old mum' 'clad in red' to create a word picture?

JazzAnnNonMouse · 11/02/2014 17:14

Ps no, choice of toys weren't great.

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 11/02/2014 17:20

Choice of toys not sensible, obviously.
'Word picture' pretty sneering.

SummersDumbAsPie · 11/02/2014 18:11

Yeah I think we all get what "word picture" you were trying to create Hmm

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 11/02/2014 18:13
