AIBU to think I will never own my home

AIBUto think we will never own a home and most like have both kids living with us well into there 30s

I a little depressing to be Honest

Oh works full time even though I am SHAM realised that even if I went back to work my wage would only cover child care so no point

We have saved which seems like a huge amount however we are told by the bank we need 50k at least deposit

We then thought about moving out of London as oh job travels however when we rand the council in Birmingham we were pretty much told because of year group ds in is the only school he would get onto are the sink schools :(

If we can't afford a home and it's 50k deposit now I can't see ds affording to move out until at least 30 If at all

So what's the point we can't buy we don't have enough to help ds we can't move out of London it's just a load of cats bum

We have tried the key worker scheme which is also cats bum

Right read all your posts thank you ladies Grin

I will address a few points

1- we can't just live anywhere in the uk some of you may not understand but we really don't want to be the only blacks in the village
So a multi ethnic population is vital which narrows things

2- moving after GCSE is possible but like someone else pointed out trying to move a 17 might prove much more tricky than trying to move a 14 year old

You have just lost any sympathy I had for your situation with the rather pathetic "blacks in the village" comment (I'm mixed race BTW).

Practically every major city in this country has a mixture of different ethnicities, you cannot claim this seriously limits your options as to where you live.

This thread is starting to sound like a pity party.

HesterShaw · 10/02/2014 20:21

I agree.

I can't do this. I can't do that. I can't do the other.

OK, here's one - price ok, you get a whole house, it's in London. Walthamstow is a very diverse area.

Sadoldbag · 10/02/2014 20:36

poster Chippednailvarnish um actually some posters were saying I should move to costal towns and I was explains what I can't hence wanting to move somewhere like Birmingham

And I don't want to be the only black person in the village my sil who is Asian lives in a part of the uk were she is the one of the only Asian were she lives and has has terrible trouble I have no desire to put my children or myself through that issue

I don't mind living in a town but would struggle I feel to live somewhere if we were the only black faces and I don't see why I should feel bad about saying that

Hellon thanks I didn't think of Walthamstow as we thought pretty much the whole of London nd most of the commuter belt was out of our reach

I will get oh to look into it tonight Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 10/02/2014 20:43

Is Walthamstow nice then?

Until 30 seconds ago I thought it was south of the river - I have no idea why since I thought I knew where most places were in London Grin

Sadoldbag · 10/02/2014 20:46

Got not a clue fairy I don't even know if it would be possible for oh to get to work from there ECt

I think a lot of the media reports on house prices certainly make you think that ordinary working people are priced out of London or priced out of house buying altogether when it's not necessarily true.

Tottenham, walthamstow, Forest Gate, Edmonton, Enfield, the upper or lower reaches of the northern line are all worth looking at, I think. Croydon worth a look? Maybe zone 5/6 in south London where it's bus or rail only - I don't know those areas well so could be wrong.

Financeprincess · 10/02/2014 21:09

If you want to live in an ethnically mixed area, why not try, ooh, let me think....

Bradford
Leeds
Manchester
Liverpool
Leicester
Nottingham
Bristol
Cardiff
Almost every major UK city?

mrsballack · 10/02/2014 22:05

East end of the district line. Personally I wouldn't go any further west than Dagenham east but that has its dodgy parts.

Don't get me wrong, havering isn't a glamorous place but there are a lot of young families about these days.

It's becoming a more diverse area than it once was.

mrsballack · 10/02/2014 22:06

Oh, and personally I hate walthamstow, I feel really unsafe there. But hubby was brought up around there and says it's fine.

ladyquinoa · 10/02/2014 22:44

Why Birmingham? You can buy lots if places outside of London for 200. Where does your DH's work area cover? Maybe we can suggest where to look?

How much money do you have saved?

Lastly, it would probably be easiest to find an area with a good school/college, move to short term rented there (6 months) and then buy.

Other great cities - if its cities you like??? Leeds, Lincoln, Newcastle, Sheffield.

ladyquinoa · 10/02/2014 22:52

200 is an ok budget. Cardiff? Lincoln? Leeds? Sheffield?

When you say the bank manager has told you the level of deposit you need - have you just approached your bank or do you have a whole of market, independent financial adviser?
