To like M&S clothes

Particularly their indigo range. Reading threads on here and talking to friends around my age (39) it would seem that I should be about 20 years older before even thinking about buying what's on offer clothes wise in M&S. Even suggesting browsing in there sometimes results in slightly confused looks, and a counter suggestion of somewhere deemed 'cooler'. What's wrong with it?

Have shopped in there all my life I am early thirties and love it for smart work stuff and basics.

I only like their children's clothes and men's shirts and jumpers. I don't find any of their women's range appealing.

I agree with your friend. Their clothes are a bit more on the old fashioned side. Though their work wear is quite smart.

I like their clothes too. Really great for work stuff. It really isn't frumpy. Maybe some people don't coordinate things well. I'm 30's too, although don't feel it!

I rather like M and S too. The Indigo range isn't for me: I think it's aimed more at the sort of women who like Fat Face and casual clothes like that. I veer more towards Autograph; Limited; and the new one they have - with lots of dresses. I love the cardis, and the tights. And the Beauty section.

Lots of mn-ers like to mock M and S. I don't really get it. M and S do a lot of different ranges, so mocking the sections that aren;t really aimed at your demographic is a bit weird.

I'm sitting here in an M and S cashmere cardi at the moment - bought in a sale - great value and lovely and warm, with jeans and a Brora scarf. I don;t think the M and S component of my attire is screaming: "Weirdo."

I'm a very similar age to you and really like M&S clothes, particularly Indigo and Autograph (not Per Una much). I get the most compliments when wearing their stuff than anything else.

Their work basics are also really reasonably priced and decent quality/fit.

I also actually love their skinny jeans - they are much cheaper and a better fit than the more expensive jeans I used to squeeze into.

Obviously I wouldn't admit this to people in real life! ha ha

I dislike Per Una but some of the Indigo, Autograph and Limited Edition collections are really nice and wearable (I'm 37).

It's just a case of choosing carefully.

The accessories (bags, scarves and shoes) are good and so are the underwear and nightwear in my opinion.

If anything my only complaint is the price of their clothing is quite high for me.

I wear their 'modern slim fit' navy trousers to work instead of my set uniform trousers and they look really smart.

Actually, one of my happiest in-my-20s memories involves items of M and S clothing: a M and S black velvet bustier, teamed with black M and S tights, and red velvet hot pants. I wore them out dancing at the "Sound Factory" in New York. Grace Jones turned up and my friends all mobbed her.

Good old M and S: there for life's journey.

Still like the knickers especially Rosie wotserchops but I feel the prices are up, the quality and fit are down and it's fecking elderly.

I'd only try limited or autograph. I'd be seen dead before wearing per una.

Asda any supermarket and h&m all beat it hands down but for vests.

Imo they always manage to get it slightly wrong.

Some detail of the item be it the cut/the colour/the detailng is almost always off.

I like M and S. One of the few plus-size shops on the high street. I don't like Autograph or Per Una but I like just the regular stuff. I'm 31, always shopped there.

Quite like it for some bits. Each to their own I say. Maybe those that claim to dislike M and S are just too cool, hip and stylish...

I like what I like and wear what I think suits me. M&S has been good for me since I've been able to afford to wear it. I've been shopping there for the past 15 years or so since I was mid 20's.

I love M&S tights, bought loads in the sales because the quality is great and they don't seem to get holes in the toes as often as cheaper ones. Quite like the bras as well, when I can find one with underwire that isn't padded in a D cup Why do shops do this??

M&S tights are the best, and they also do almost the only bras which fit me, even if they are rubbish at the actually fitting, and for many other people.

I have quite a few other bits of M&S clothing, including my last interview suit. The bigger stores do have more choice, and I think if you only have a smaller store nearby, then it would be easy to think the range is small.

M&S Indigo, ordinary non any particular range tops, sometimes, five pocket jeggins are reasonable.
Every day size 16 SAHM stuff they do quite well if you hunt and it's £10 cheaper and washes better than White Stuff.

DD2(12) likes indigo girls jeans and very occasional other bits (far too much HK and often ££££) but supermarkets seem to stop at 8/10

Is the children's stuff ok for work? If I end up in the UK, I have no idea where to find nice clothes for work. I'm 76 pounds and too small to fit into even size 6.... Singapore has M and S but only a small selection of clothes for teens.

Singapore was my last stop on my way home after months of travelling. I felt so extravagant buying a three-pack of knickers, instead of hand-washing the ones I had been hand-washing in tuen every night again. (Not helpful to anyone - I was just reminded.)

i think the quality of m&s is not as good as it once was. it was always good for basics but now they do so many ranges that they have lost their way who is it they really want to appeal to

also they have much more competition i think if they did fewer ranges of stuck with a few good classic pieces they would have more customers returning to them

I'm 44 and the only things I buy in there are their pack of thongs, black, nude and white cotton vest tops and food.

I never see anything I like - they always get it slightly wrong in my eyes and I'm more a Zara, Whistles, Cos, Massimo Duti clothes wearer.

i agree they get it slightly wrong

and there is too much stock, it is overwhelming when you go in there too much choice

the food is great
