I'm a regular poster but I have ranted to my friends about this so I didn't want to be 'outed' on here.

I have had some fraudulent activity on my bank account which has now all been sorted. Unfortunately having made provisions for my direct debits and standing orders I forgot about my home contents insurance. I have just returned home to a letter from MoreThan informing me that as they could not take my payment of £10.73 they have served me a notice of default under the 1974 Consumer Credit Act.

I am livid! I rang them up, payed the missed payment and cancelled my policy. I told them all it would've taken was a simple call or letter to tell me about the missed payment and I would've rectified it. They replied that they are unable to phone as they have no facilities for out-bound calls. However after the call they did send me a text confirming my cancellation.

AIBU to be furious about a default notice for 1 missed payment of £10.73 or is this usual?

Well I think it is pretty normal but that is hardly consoling. My child benefit was what we forgot in the same circumstances and we got cut off too with no warning. (not UK) It is huge hassle isn't it?

Well they didn't cut me off, I cancelled because I was so angry. It just seems so stupid to lose my custom because if this.

Yanbu - I bet its on you credit history too the bastards.

Yes I agree. The whole process was very tedious for us. We both, as it was a joint account, spent the guts of an afternoon in the bank changing all dds, standing orders etc. The reason it happened was because our doozy electricity supplier had given our bank details and those of the rest of its clients to some dodgy operator. Come to think of it we didn't even cancel the electricity supplier, we should have.

Of course they have facilities to call out, how do they liase with their own team members? Assessors on site, etc? Bullshit.

It pisses me off when organisations say "can't" when what they mean is "won't". Or "can't be arsed to". Like Serenata Wines "can't" cancel an order placed by mistake when it's website failed to behave itself.

If it is on your credit file, and they won't remove it, I believe you can add an explanatory note to the file.
