Prom dress!

jugofwildflowers · 03/02/2014 21:53

My dd asked me a year ago to go shopping with her for a prom dress and wanted the whole experience to be a fab mother/dd bonding experience but because I baulked at the cost of a one off dress potentially costing £100s and suggesting we try charity shops first she hit the roof, 'sacked' me and said she'd rather go with her aunt instead.

Fast forward to today, she wrote me a 'text' apologising for 'sacking' me and now wishes to go with me and I mentioned a budget, she said no other of her friends' mums were like that! She said it should cost £200 including shoes, bag, dress and I said she'd need to go halves. She was outraged!

Please help, what is the etiquette about these things? We don't have a lot of cash, I have only just started work and we are going skiing at half term which is expensive. I am the sort of person who wears charity shop stuff anyway and have never had my hair cut at a hairdressers in my life, nor had my nails done etc etc.

She is very different, likes all the feminine stuff but it cost so much. She is helpful around the house for which she gets an allowance, she is popular, hardworking, a lovely person, does voluntary work too.

Am I being overly miserly just because I don't agree with this sort of imported materialistic thing and because I never asked my own mother for demands such as this? She says she lives in a different time and would re use the dress etc. I have 3 dds so whatever I start will be a precedent.

What are other mumsnetters doing? and what is reasonable?!

I'm sorry, but you still sound very dismissive of the whole thing. I don't like the prom idea either but when the time comes I will muster up some enthusiasm for DD (as long as she doesn't ask for a stretch limo or something else as naff)

Hi jugofwildflowers

A relative of mine is a pageant winner, she is currently selling the dress she wore when she won her crown on this site. There maybe something on there she loves for less?

It makes me laugh that they need all these memory items, 90% of them will be back at the bloody school in September for sixth form.

see up here we dont have 6th form so they dont actually leave and come back you stay on to 6th year or you leave we have the prom in 6th year and they get all the hoodies photies prom in one year, was the only bloody reason dd1 stayed on

Have you been to Bicester Village before OP?

It's just that I can only think of a few shops that would even sell anything suitable for a prom, then the fact that they are outlets means size availability might not be great.

Bicester Village is great if you want a certain designer brand or just to mooch around and see what takes your fancy but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice for prom dress shopping.

mrscumberbatch · 07/02/2014 11:35

My prom dress was £40 from a fetish shop Wink

Although I managed to find my Dsis's in TK Maxx for £50 and it was so beautiful that its being held onto to get passed down the generations. (I am jealous)

I understand that your DD is under pressure from peers etc but she needs to get a grip!

£50 more than fair... If you're happy to stretch to £100 she is unfathomably lucky.

Last year was my eldest prom . Prom in sixth year and only for the students who have stayed right to the end.

Did the whole trying on dresses , spent a couple of hundred that I saved up . Bought her shoes etc and also paid for hair and make up . She will never forget that I made that effort and I suppose the difference is it seems the age/ coming after stressful final exams. I was very proud of her.

This year my second daughter has been invited to her boyfriends plus next year she will have her own . I have a lot less enthusiasm forking out for two in a row .

mrsjay · 07/02/2014 11:41

oh I am now worried dd2s boyfriend is in 6th year eek does that mean she might be invited if they are still together Shock I dont think i would go the whole hog though a nice cheap dress and her hair done maybe

worldgonecrazy · 07/02/2014 11:49

I can recommend TK MAxx - I just bought an evening dress from there for 35 and it's gorgeous.

I am so glad that DD goes to a school where they don't do proms.

Hazelbrowneyes · 07/02/2014 12:05

My mum spent a fortune on my prom and I regret that now. I had my hair professionally done, corsage, beautiful dress, the works. It was a brilliant night but totally OTT to be honest. I wish 16 yr old me had realised that.

I do still have the dress though and I keep meaning to eBay it but I actually can't bring myself to do it Blush

I would look in charity shops - I do a lot of shopping in them now. Going tomorrow in fact Grin You can get absolute bargains too. Where are you based OP?

FootieOnTheTelly · 07/02/2014 12:17

I also think Bicester village would not be good for prom dress shopping. We found much better dresses and much better bargains in Oxford. Plus Oxford makes for a much nicer day out.

purplebaubles · 07/02/2014 12:20

Get on the FB selling pages. There are loads of people selling beautiful prom dresses (all worn just the once, and costing ££££ new) right now. Most are being sold for £40!

Alexchallex · 07/02/2014 12:24

I got bridesmaid dresses from
Coast for less than 100 pounds. Shoes from bhs were less than twenty. Infact bhs do bridesmaid dresses, which are essentially prom dresses. Again under 100 x

ToFollowJulie · 12/02/2014 11:35

I read this thread last week and thought I'd come back to say that, having looked at the dresses suggested by MazzleDazzle and tinytalker my DD ordered this dress. It came yesterday and it's gorgeous. Thank you!

irregularegular · 12/02/2014 11:43

Has she thought about hiring? Some fabulous dresses here:

FWIW I think the whole thing is ridiculous. However, i think you have to try and show some enthusiasm - but she has to be civil! You let her know how much you are willing to pay and if she wants to spend more that's up to her. £200 for an outfit for a teenager sounds like LOADS to me, and I refuse to believe that everyone else is spending more, unless you live somewhere unusal.
