Too put my 5 year old in a nappy because of bad diarrhea

My ds3 is 5 and has got the trots very badly. He still wears nappies to bed as he is not dry, but this morning he woke up with a load in his nappy. He spent all morning on the toilet, but whenever he has come off he has pood his pants. He wouldnt stop pooing himself and unless I glue him to the toilet he wont stay on it. So I asked if he would wear one of his nappies "just in case". He agreed and has since been filling his nappies as oppose to his pants. I did emphasise to him that he is to try and make it to the toilet. Is this wrong, I do feel a bit lazy, but he was going threw all his pants, its that bad. If he is like this tommorow I will call the doctor. Thanks

I've done it before. Could you nip out for pull ups instead so he can still go to the loo?

LEMmingaround · 02/02/2014 11:43

Yanbu

LucyLasticBand · 02/02/2014 11:47

i spose it will save the washing.

thenamestheyareachanging · 02/02/2014 11:49

I did this once, but ds was only 3. Depends on your son, and whether he'll feel humiliated by it.

foreverondiet · 02/02/2014 12:21

Fine if not leaving the house and your son is happy with it.

Bunbaker · 02/02/2014 12:24

I wouldn't have thought she would leave the house with a child with diarrhoea anyway.

I hope your son feels better soon jeb

mrsjay · 02/02/2014 12:50

yanbu your poor son he might not know he needs to go to the toilet and it saves it landing in his pants bless him hope he is better soon

DragonMamma · 02/02/2014 12:53

I'm a bit torn on this one, I can see the practicalities of putting him in a nappy but he is 5 and I personally wouldn't have even thought of putting my 5yo in a nappy when they had D&V, I would be worried about them being humiliated by it.

livelablove · 02/02/2014 12:56

I think that is fine, just make sure he knows it is only because he is ill. I don't think he would want to wear a nappy now he is at school also not very comfy so he should be glad to not wear one once he is better.

mrsjay · 02/02/2014 12:56

he has the runs it is landing in his pants and probably halfway down his leg i dont think D n V is the best to judge on humiliation and he will be humilated whether he is in a nappy or not ,

Logg1e · 02/02/2014 13:01

In a similar situation it didn't occur to me to put my daughter in a nappy.
We just kind of made a bit of a "nest" in the bathroom with blanket and towels so she was near to the toilet. She had books but was too exhausted to read really.

It wasn't one of our best days.

Logg1e · 02/02/2014 13:02

Why are only half of us using punctuation this morning?

kilmuir · 02/02/2014 13:02

Yes do it, as long as he tries to get to loo

mrsjay · 02/02/2014 13:02

Why are only half of us using punctuation this morning?

cos it is Sunday having a day of rest, Grin

Latara · 02/02/2014 13:04

I think (and I don't have children myself) it's a good idea - I've worn a pad when I've had bad norovirus and it's the same principle.

hellokittymania · 02/02/2014 13:08

Your poor DS :(

Yanbu and I doubt he's well enough to worry about humiliation.... I've had really bad D and V twice while living in Vietnam. I was in bed for a week the first time. Not nice.

Op if he isn't better please call the doctor.

bodygoingsouth · 02/02/2014 13:09

but why would he want to sit in it? are you changing him as soon as he goes? can't see the advantage here and his skin will get so sore rather than just his anus.

if he's that bad he needs medication now really. send someone to the chemists and keep him on the loo with comics and books. you may need to chuck them away later.

mrsjay · 02/02/2014 13:10

you are right hellokitty he will be to ill to care really

MostWicked · 02/02/2014 13:14

If he is used to still wearing them on a night, then I think it is ok. It's not likely to be for too long. Poor chap, hope he gets better soon.

gamerchick · 02/02/2014 13:17

of course it's a good idea. Christ i have a pack of adult incontinence pull ups in the house for illness to give a few extra seconds to make it to the loo. They can be a godsend.

MammaTJ · 02/02/2014 13:19

DS age 7 still wears pull ups at night and if he was ill, I would put them on him in the day too!

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/02/2014 13:20

Yanbu. Can't see how shitting himself would be less humiliating than a nappy tbh.

I hope your Ds feels better soon how rotten for him :(

MyBaby1day · 02/02/2014 13:20

YANBU, it's fine, will save any mess. When you are ill things really change.

Mmmbacon · 02/02/2014 14:04

Yanbu, happened to me once, I was a teen, working on my neughbours farm, farted and sh%t.came out, I hasn't even felt sick, had to walk half a field to find boss, explain I had d&v and could she drive me home, she asked if I could wait till she finished the row, and my face went bright red and said no,

She.had to drive me home in her van with me kneeling backwards holding.on to the headrest for support
D&v is embarrassing regardless,

you do what you need to do, I'm guessing nappies might prevent the spread of the bug to other family members as it contains everything, less washing of soiled clothes,

Appologies for typos, stupid phone

FlockOfTwats · 02/02/2014 14:13

I would do it, It's got to be more comfortable than it getting in their pants surely?

I had a uti recently and kept wetting myself slightly. I tenna lady until the antibiotics kicked in and the worst was over. I see no difference in providing my child with essentially the same thing.
