to be expecting ds to break out with chicken pox at any moment?

Ds aged 3 two best friends from nursery have been off sick all week with cp, I don't know when they broke out. He had a raging temp for 12 hours on sun/mon night hitting 40C, had a runny nose and been out of sorts all week. Is it coming or am I stressing unnecessarily?

I know timing is never good, but now really wouldn't be.

I would put money on it, sorry Hope it's bearable for him. Calamine cream is good, the lotion not so much.

I found my DC having chicken pox no where near as bad as I expected. I gave them Piriton to stop the itching and they just carried on, albeit with more naps and earlier bedtimes. Good luck.

Oh interesting ... Same situation here. Have been sure it'd have happened by now but this makes me think it's still possible. Hope your LO doesn't have too tough a time if it comes. Going to stock up on medicine just in case

Trip to stock up the medicine cupboard tomorrow then. Going away for the weekend tomorrow, everyone there has had it though. Do you cancel on just in case?

My daughter has just had chicken pox, she had a temp on the sat/sun, monday got her first spot and by the tuesday they were coming thick and fast! Just waiting for four more kids to get it.

My DS's nursery now has signs on the doors of all the rooms saying how many cases they've had in that room. His room is the only one with no-one out but he mixes with the room with 7 out in the morning and garden.

If he does come down with it what do I need to be prepared to help him?

calpol for pain/fever
virasoothe - expensive but good cream helps with itching

apparently bath with bicarb is good - ive not tried as we dont have a bath!

Pure essential oil of Lavender helps itching & will promote healing.

6-8 dps in the bath. 2-4 n a bowl of cool water &soak a flannel in it for a compress.

Regular alternate paracetamol & ibuprofen for first few days. Lots of rest &fluids.

My chap was fine once the spots came out (8 months and again at 18 months). It was the temperature bit that you're experiencing now that was the worst.
I would be tempted to keep your weekend plans... more people about might help distract him from the spots.

katyN can you get CP twice?? Dd has had it at 19 months but 5 mo hasn't had it yet. Would hate for dd1 to get it again.

You can get CP twice especially if the first outbreak occurred before the age of one as often immunity is not conferred. It's a lot less likely to get it again if the child was older when they got it.

And best to get it out of the way as a child - you do NOT want to have it as an adult, it's grim.

I did read somewhere not to give ibuprofen as it can cause a bad reaction, just stick to calpol.

Mines got it at the moment he's been absolutely fine, be prepared e.g virasooth calpol and food as you can't go out.

Yup. Sounds like CP. My DS is currently recovering from it. I have found Calpol for temperature, Piriton and Poxclin for itching a good combination. Apart from the runny nose and a bit of short-temperedness, he's been fine. I, however, am going to scream if I have to watch "Gnomeo & Juliet" one more time.

I have just spoken to the doctor as dd (8 months) has just started with chicken pox. She said not to use calamine lotion as it's very drying and to use a non scented moisturiser like e45 cream.
Dd started with a temperature and cold like symptoms on Friday and the spots began to appear yesterday

Thank you, all that information is so helpful. Another question, has anyone else's little one had excessive dribbling because of it? My DS has all his teeth but is really dribbling the last couple of days plus has little appetite

A tip I found worked really well - buy a bag of plain oatmeal, put some of it in the end of an old sock and swirl it around in the bath. The bath water will go milky - it was literally the only thing that made my baby feel better when he had CP, I spent many hours with him sitting in the bath gently rubbing the sock over his skin.

Also, although piriton is good, my son took a reaction to it the first time I gave it to him - he went absolutely loopy, couldn't settle, banging his head off the headboard, up all night. I thought it was just the chicken pox but someone else told me their child had a similar reaction to the piriton.

mini you can get chicken pox in the mouth- might explain the loss of appetite and dribbling.

We are waiting to see if we have chickenpox too. The incubation period is 10 to 21 days from exposure so you might be in for a long wait!

I think the catching it again if they've had it before they are 1yo is an old wives tale.
If they've only had it mildly, they may get it again. Some people are prone to getting it again and again (one of our secondary school teachers got it every time ) and I did know one particular epidemic round school where child after child had it for the second time.

Dd2 had it at 7months (and only had one spot in the end-it just covered her from head to toe ) and I asked the GP about that, and he said it wasn't true in his experience.

You can have spots in the mouth, ds had them. Look at the tongue, they're very obvious sores, don't look like chickenpox spots, just circular spots. If they have that you need to be aware that you need to go to A&E if breathing is effected as very occasionally the spots go inside and down into the lungs.

Our GP prescribed (I think) rust tox-a herbal remedy which seems to reduce the number of spots coming out.
