AIBU to be a bit Hmm at the following message that has today appeared on the wall in the kitchen at work

"No smelly food to be heated in microwave - Take your curry back where it belongs.....................................at HOME"

??

That seems racist to me Sad

JamNan · 30/01/2014 18:14

Try a Fish pie?

BadgersRetreat · 30/01/2014 18:15

blimey that's a bit much - to specify one type of food. and fish smells much more than curry

ilovepowerhoop · 30/01/2014 18:15

something eggy would be nice too

evertonmint · 30/01/2014 18:16

Not sure how that can be read as racist without further info - maybe one particular person heats up smelly curries!

It's certainly passive-aggressive though

blahblahblah2014 · 30/01/2014 18:16

I think someone is trying to be funny rather than racist tbh but still......

OP posts:
BoneyBackJefferson · 30/01/2014 18:16

poached smoked Kippers it is then :)

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 30/01/2014 18:16

What a twatty message. I'd be tempted to take a shit in the microwave bring in my very strongest curry every day for a week.

Who wrote it?

blahblahblah2014 · 30/01/2014 18:17

Big open plan office with about 40+ of us here, when someone cooks something such as curry it does linger all over the office with is either teasing when you are hungry or yuk when you are not....

OP posts:
blahblahblah2014 · 30/01/2014 18:17

It just appeared, no author....

OP posts:
candycoatedwaterdrops · 30/01/2014 18:18

If it had said no smelly food and made no comment about curry, I'd have ignored it anyway Wink but the curry comment seems a bit pointed. It probably was a joke though.

blahblahblah2014 · 30/01/2014 18:22

To be fair, it is curry that seems to stink the place out rather than anything else, i think someone that sits on that side of the office (nearer the kitchen than myself) probably got fed up and wrote it.

Curry isn't a race lol

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 30/01/2014 18:26

Racist?? Shock

It could just as easily have been said about fish

Or would that be fishist? Grin

Either way, they a bloody coward whoever they are.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 30/01/2014 18:26

I disagree. I don't mind people cooking curry but kebabs really so stink the place out!

SuburbanRhonda · 30/01/2014 18:26

OP, I'm not aware I was suggesting curry is a race Hmm

If it were my workplace, I would take the notice down and put it in the bin. I wouldn't care who saw me doing it either.

Bowlersarm · 30/01/2014 18:27

I can understand it. Stale stinky food odour - yuk. Who wants to sit in an office like that? It should be extended to other smelly foods as well, though.

Actually, thinking about it, doesn't most food smell once it's been microwaved?

SuburbanRhonda · 30/01/2014 18:28

worra, true, it could have been said about any foodstuff.

But it wasn't, was it? It was said about curry.

And it didn't say "Don't heat it up in the microwave", it said, "Take it back where it belongs - at home".

Bowlersarm · 30/01/2014 18:31

Suburban I think you're reading too much into it.

The op has said that it is the curry which smells the place out.

Most people I know eat curry. It's not singling anyone group of people out.

DameDeepRedBetty · 30/01/2014 18:32

Errr.... Rhonda, I really do think you're over-thinking this a bit!

brettgirl2 · 30/01/2014 18:33

Grin anything can be seen as racist on mn.

The person who put the notice put IBU tho. ...

SweetPeaPods · 30/01/2014 18:34

I would be doing scrambled egg tomorrow, followed by something fishy next week, and maybe something really garlicky.

MrsKoala · 30/01/2014 18:35

The thing is all food smells bad if you don't like it. I have had many of these scenarios. I remember the chicken cup a soup from the machine actually made me gag, but i of course said nothing - my problem right? But then i had a cup of bovril and the chicken soup lady banged on and on about it till i said
'don't you think the smell of your cup a soup smells disgusting to me?'
Shock 'what do you mean? cup a soups are lovely..'
'Maybe to YOU they are!'
'You're weird EVERYONE love cup a soup'
'umm you really can't cope with a different opinion to your own can you?'

Another time someone used to bring in boiled fish and cabbage, now that was strong. But i do think you have to ban all foods or none. Because it's all perception. Some people wear perfume which gives me a headache. Where does it stop?

brettgirl2 · 30/01/2014 18:41

when I was pregnant the smell of cup a soup made me heave!

WorraLiberty · 30/01/2014 18:47

SuburbanRhonda But how is that racist?

WhoNickedMyName · 30/01/2014 18:52

I would rip the sign up and leave it on top of the microwave.
