To ask, is Jim Davidson really a nice man?

I was just chatting with OH here and I said I quite liked him on CBB. Apart from a few questionable remarks to Casey he seems a reasonably nice guy. OH reckons he has a bad reputation. Is this true? If so why?

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2014 19:26

Er, no.

OP saw him on CBB and liked him. Her DH also watched it and didn't like him. She asked about that.

You can say whatever you like but it doesn't answer her question, which is very interesting: how does the media manipulate our our perceptions?

It certainly doesn't answer the question to deride viewers of CBB.

An interest in the size and shape of Kim Kardashian’s bum does not preclude you from an opinion about Syria.

If you don’t think so, try me. But if you don't have an opinion on Syria, so what? I'm sure you have an opinion on some other 'important' matter.

That’s why I asked the poster who jibed about CCB watchers to name her viewing preferences so we can all judge them.

FWIW I've met Jim Davidson briefly and he was a cunt. I would never want to meet him again without a big knife in my hand and a good alibi.

However, having watched CBB, I can see why he won. Did you watch it?

scottishmummy · 31/01/2014 19:31

His humour is racist, and sexist.utilising lazy and prejudicial sterotypes
He's well quoted as being offensive
None of the ex wife's speak fondly of him

newmorning · 31/01/2014 20:02

"The joke he made about bathing Casey is about incest"

Is it?

I thought incest was all about the family relationship between two people engaged in sexual intercourse.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_regarding_incest#United_Kingdom

Age does not enter into it.

Therefore, if it's incestuous for a parent to bathe an adult child, it must also be incestuous for a parent to bathe a toddler - and it must also be incestuous for a parent to bathe an adult child that's incapable of bathing him/herself.

So I don't think the joke was about incest.

newmorning · 31/01/2014 20:11

The much-loathed JD has outraged countless women, gays and non-Caucasians with his 1970s-style nightclub humour but let's not forget that the much-loved Dave Allen (see several postings above) outraged more Catholics than JD did women, gays and non-Caucasians.

Who goes to Hell?

YOU decide! Shock

LetZygonsbeZygons · 31/01/2014 20:12

bt it was okay for lionel whos in his 80s to leer about with jasmine and Luisa saying 'suck my dick'?

I knmow this threads about JD but why is everyone overlooking LB? I thought his behaviour was worse.

dawntigga · 31/01/2014 20:13

namechangesforthehardstuff Blush

And FFS OF COURSE the bathing 'joke' was inappropriate, in so many fucking ways, the first of which is alluding to incest. Biscuit

I'm not going to trouble myself to link to Wikpedia but it raised that issue in my mind newmorning

That's the really interesting thing about comedy. It raises some very serious issues, doesn't it?

Perhaps Jim Davidson would agree. Would you?

Darkesteyes · 31/01/2014 20:27

newmorning Dave Allen pointed out the hypocrisy and brainwashing of the Catholic religion in some of his monologues and sketches. Because much like myself....hypocrisy and brainwashing are things that he couldnt stand. I found/find him funny insightful and intelligent. And having been brought up Catholic (Half my family is Italian) much of what he said resonated with me greatly.

Quote from him "the Catholic church offers women 2 choices Perpetual virginity or perpetual pregnancy" he pointed out the mysogyny in that religion too.
The mysogyny and hypocrisy are the reasons i left Catholicism behind in my past and have rejected it completely.

newmorning · 31/01/2014 20:33

I don't suggest DA was better, the same or worse than JD.

I make no judgements whatever. I merely pointed out the fact that both comedians outraged huge numbers of innocent people who felt they were being comedically abused and humiliated.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2014 20:43

newmorning I'm not talking about Dave Allen.

What do you think about Jim Davidson and the nature of comedy as a force for debate in general?

I find it fascinating.

And what do you think about that comment, which is about incest, whether you realise it or have to have it pointed out to you on the end of a blunt stick?

WallyBantersJunkBox · 31/01/2014 20:44

Err, why I am being dragged into the argument about watching CBB? Confused

I was referring to the mention of the person running Channel 5 opening up a career path for JD via the power of nepotism. I don't watch a lot of the channel (I live in a country an hour ahead of the UK, and work around Europe, so don't often have access to UK channels), and if JD is going to be shoe horned into the programming schedule then I'll probably watch even less of it. I lived through "Up the Elephant", "New Faces" and "Give us a Break" as a kid. Even then I thought he was crap and annoying, now I can choose my own channel, I'll turn him over thank you.

When I read in the press that JD was on CBB I decided that I definitely wouldn't watch it. Had there been a celebrity I was interested in (or a few I actually recognized) I might have watched when I had the time.

I wasn't actually judging anyone on what they did or didn't watch. I couldn't give two shiny shites. Watch what the fuck you like, but when you read a thread, remember what other posters are referring to. Hmm

Scarletohello · 31/01/2014 20:46

Not even going to bother to read the thread.

NO. Disgusting racist mysoginistic arse.

Fragglewump · 31/01/2014 20:53

He was vile to my friend when he visited the department store she worked in. Arrogant contemptuous arsehole.

FushandChups · 31/01/2014 20:54

Haven't RTFT but just wanted to say he is a horrible horrible man..

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2014 21:02

I wasn't aware I was dragging you into anything WallyBantersJunkBox.

It was a genuine question: have you watched this series of CBB?

I always find it's wise to know what you're talking about before you comment on it.

I think Davidson is a weapons grade cunt. But having watched the show, I can see why he won. I find that far more interesting than saying: 'He's a cunt. I never watch him.'

RedPencils · 31/01/2014 21:03

He said to Casey 'if you were my daughter I'd still be bathing you'.
Unless they edited out the end of the sentence when he said '...because you have a disability so you can't manage it yourself', then he meant it in a leery way because she's a pretty busty brunette. Utterly utterly inappropriate.

The comment from Lionel Blair was in the context of a task. He was not propositioning either of the girls.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 31/01/2014 21:04

Er, no back at you. OP said:

"OH reckons he has a bad reputation. Is this true? If so why?"

I may be very slow on the uptake, but I don't see why it is necessary to have watched CBB in order to answer the questions "Is it true that JD has a bad reputation?" or "If it is true that JD has a bad reputation, why is that?"

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 31/01/2014 21:16

(You may find the question "how does the media manipulate our our perceptions?" more interesting. It may well be more interesting. There's no reason for parts of this thread not to veer off into discussing that, just as there's no reason for parts of this thread not to veer off into discussing 80s comedy in general and what JD's image was at that time. But it isn't the question the OP asked at the start of the thread, and asserting that it is doesn't make it so. And there's nothing unreasonable, or worthy of disrespect, about posters answering the question that was originally asked -- or answering other questions that other posters on this thread have posed.)

No, I didn't watch CBB. I have not commented on CBB. I have commented on JD in general, very specifically in relation to CaptainGrinch's twin assertions that JD's humour fitted in with all the rest of entertainment in the 80s and that we all laughed at it then. I think I'm qualified to comment on those as I was around, and watching comedy, in the 80s. I'm not going to comment on CBB, because I'm not qualified to do it. I'm not going to comment in general on how the media has manipulated our perceptions of JD because I don't think I've seen him on television in the last twenty years, so I'm not qualified to comment.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2014 21:21

I may be very slow on the uptake, but I don't see why it is necessary to have watched CBB in order to answer the questions "Is it true that JD has a bad reputation?" or "If it is true that JD has a bad reputation, why is that?"

No, I don't think you're slow on the uptake at all. Why would you think that of me?

As I've repeatedly said, I've met Davidson once. It wasn't nice. I don't want to repeat it.

Many others have seen or heard his routines, which are not only offensive, they're not even funny. He is the only person I've ever complained about to the BBC who inexplicably broadcast one of his stand-up shows late one Saturday night.

So what is there to say?

Either say: 'He's a cunt. I don't like him.'

Or: 'Why do people like this person?'

I agree with the first answer but I find the second one more interesting. And it would help answer that if you'd watched CBB.

DoctorTwo · 31/01/2014 21:42

From my Facebook t'other night:-

"What the actual fuck? Davidson's won CBB!" Shock

"Britains favourite racist"

"At least Manning had the decency to die"

ComposHat · 31/01/2014 21:54

The much-loathed JD has outraged countless women, gays and non-Caucasians with his 1970s-style nightclub humour but let's not forget that the much-loved Dave Allen (see several postings above) outraged more Catholics than JD did women, gays and non-Caucasians.

New the difference is so clear I am amazed it needs pointing out.

1)Jim Davidson insulted already marginalised groups on the basis of what they are. (Black, gay, disabled, a woman)

Dave Allen challenged the hypocrisy, cruelty and stupidity of an immensely rich and powerful organisation and its autocratic leaders.

  1. Even if ordinary Catholics were offended at their leaders and the institution of the Catholic church having the piss ripped out of it, it is a different category of offence. Unlike ethnicity, ethnicity or sexuality, you chose to subscribe to a religion and adhere by its customs. So you should be prepared to have it questioned challenged and mocked by others. Just as I am prepared to have my political views or vegetarianism or choice of football team challenged and mocked.

  2. The mere fact that others find something causes outrage or offence doesn't make it bad, nor is it a numbers game of 'He who offends the most people is the worse.'

Darkesteyes · 31/01/2014 22:04

StealthPolarBear · 31/01/2014 22:07

Lighthousekeeping · 31/01/2014 22:49

At least Graham Nortons just had a pop about him. The only one that's had the backbone to.
