To ask, is Jim Davidson really a nice man?

I was just chatting with OH here and I said I quite liked him on CBB. Apart from a few questionable remarks to Casey he seems a reasonably nice guy. OH reckons he has a bad reputation. Is this true? If so why?

Hmmmm as mentioned previously, are we saying that Jimmy Saville wasn't totally bad, because of the money he raised?

And Hitler was nice to dogs etc etc.

I'm sure everyone has their good days. What you have to do is weigh them up against the number of bad ones. To me if someone comes out as 80% arsehole, then they are basically, an arsehole.

Holding your hands up and saying "I'm a terrible homophobic" doesn't allow you to be exactly that.

I saw on my husbands Facebook thread that a lot of squaddies from varying ranks and regiments were complaining about him winning and discussing stories of his terrible behaviour whilst performing on his tours. He only performed in Iraq unpaid as far as I know, and most likely would take a salary from the charity. He certainly wouldn't pay for travel and accommodation to some of the places he performed at, he would have flown in with the RAF and stayed in a mess.

Most of these army shows consist of a line up, like any variety type performance and people attend because they see lots of acts, and there is nothing better to do, or they show face.

Forces people don't all slavishly follow him like a pack of devoted sea lions, certainly not from the status updates I've read today.

noddyholder · 30/01/2014 18:52

Exactly. Bad people do good things to ingratiate themselves where they think it will benefit them

BumPotato · 30/01/2014 18:52

I take the point about innocents in jail, those that mentioned it. Something about his talk about his arrest following yew tree just didn't ring true with me.

panedd · 30/01/2014 18:53

limitedperiodonly I forgot the ratings don't pick up viewers who watch shite on a cerebral level.
I think it is worse to watch it and know it's shit than it is to sit there and actually enjoy it.

treaclesoda · 30/01/2014 18:54

I can scarcely imagine anything more awful than being in the forces, posted overseas, risking your life, maybe homesick and lonely, and lo, your 'treat' is that Jim Davidson comes to 'entertain' you. And he expects you to be grateful.

limitedperiodonly · 30/01/2014 18:57

That's very high-minded of you panedd.

Let me know what your favourite entertainment is and I'll share mine.

BumPotato · 30/01/2014 19:00

I watched CBB pretty much because I love to hate Luisa. I was the same with The Apprentice when she appeared on that.

She is a carbon copy, looks and personality, of a former work colleague of mine. I loved to hate her too, but obv had to keep my mouth shut about it at work.

limitedperiodonly · 30/01/2014 19:10

treaclesoda some of Our Boys didn't want to be co-opted by The Sun and Davidson during the Falklands but there wasn't a lot they could do about it

WallyBantersJunkBox · 30/01/2014 19:12

treacle you've summed up most of the feelings I've read today.

Add to that - you have to show face and be grateful for the support! My DH has never read a copy of the Sun in his life! He can't see what the hell was wrong with the British Legion - they seem overlooked by these celebrity support mechanisms, yet they do a brilliant job of supporting the forces.

The reason why some people think JD is nice, a reformed character and so on - and btw, there is nothing more cliche-tastic describing somebody as having a heart of gold - is because it's actually fairly easy to be superficially charming and say the right things, especially if you've been trained.

Being charming is not the same as being a decent person.

OneStepCloser · 30/01/2014 19:34

Didn't Micheal Barrymore go on one of these shows and hoped to make a comeback? Well, thank god he didn't and I can't believe for one minute Jim Davidson will either. The likes of those two had their hey day thank god but I guess the only gigs they're likely to get will be summer shows on the end of piers (if we're really lucky someone might shove them over).

They weren't funny then and they're not funny now, just sad washed up pathetic men.

namechangesforthehardstuff · 30/01/2014 19:52

This thread has reminded me of the myriad reasons I hate JD (another one who has a mate who worked with him who says he's an utter gropey sleaze) but it's more reminded me how much I love tigga Grin

Ubik1 · 30/01/2014 20:06

That Sun story has made my day Grin

"You're a fucking wanker"

Funnier than Jim ever was

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 30/01/2014 20:59

I despise him. Really, really despise him and always have done.

But look at it this way...him winning CBB means he's now officially been crowned King Of a The Cunts.

panedd · 30/01/2014 21:05

I'm finding your comments quite entertaining for a start limited

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 30/01/2014 21:06

Love the David Thewlis story Grin Please let it be true.

motherinferior · 30/01/2014 21:37

I am coming to the conclusion I inhabited a different 1980s from some people on this thread.

FloweryFeatureWall · 30/01/2014 21:42

Testing testing

Jim's a douche

itsbetterthanabox · 30/01/2014 21:55

One of my friends is a gay woman in the forces. How horrible that she would have to endure listening to Jim Davidsons disgusting sexist and homophobic jokes whilst at work! It just breeds discrimination in the work place.
You know what would actually help the forces? JD paying taxes into the uk from the money he has made in the uk rather than emigrating to a tax haven.

newmorning · 30/01/2014 22:10

I see Hitler and Jimmy Savile have been introduced into the discussion but on a good-bad scale ranging from Jesus to Beelzeebub, I'm sure Hitler would be a lot closer to the devilish end than JD would, and I'm sure JD would also be a long way behind Jimmy Savile on the road to Hell.

JD's no admirer of women or gays and he hasn't done much for race relations either but we should keep things in proportion when slagging him off.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 30/01/2014 22:15

I see someone has failed to understand that the introduction of Hitler and Saville into the discussion was to respond to the points about "No one's a total arsehole" and "he does a lot for charity."

Ah well, Jim Davidson fans were never the brightest.

Ubik1 · 30/01/2014 22:26

This is true. In the end he's just a fat comedian

newmorning · 30/01/2014 22:28

"Jim Davidson fans were never the brightest"

Perhaps not, but I bet most of them can spell 'Savile'.

noddyholder · 30/01/2014 22:50

I would agree about his fans cannot believe women defending him.
