I am trying to lose weight through Slimming World.

Took a break for a few weeks over Xmas, gained a bit. Started again back on plan, after first week I lost 2lb. Second week I lost 5.5lb.

This week, I put on 4.5lb Shock

I have stuck to plan - I had one day at the weekend where I wasn't 100% and prob went over my syns as had several glasses of wine, but other than that, on the other 6 days I was fine.

I am now almost afraid to eat. I have 2.5-3st to lose, I am terrified of being stuck going backwards and forwards at this weight forever :( Esp as I have no idea how I gained this week!

You lost 3 st in 6 months last year, which Ian fantastic. You have to face the fact that the next 2.5 st will take longer, as it's harder to lose weight as you get closer to target.

ICanSeeTheSeaFromHere · 28/01/2014 12:57

Would a change of diet help? I go to WW and a lady joined last summer who had lost a truly amazing 5stone with SW but then she just seemed to stay the same. She had 2st2lbs to go to target and after a change in plan to WW she got to target the week before Christmas.

Sleep is also as important as water and food!

Dodgy scales?

I mean 5.5 pounds lost in a week? Is that even possible?

I always thought the rule of thumb was that you had to take in 3,500 calories less than you required to lose 1lb. So say you are a woman who requires 2000 calories a day and you eat only 1500 calories a day, then over a week you are 3,500 calories "down" so you would lose about 1lb.

By that token, to lose 5.5 pounds you would have to be 19,250 calories down. If the average woman only requires 14,000 calories a week then I can't understand how you would manage that weight loss without having something small amputated.

Am I missing something?

HeadfirstThroughTheTimeVortex · 28/01/2014 13:39

The heavier you are the more calories you use to maintain your current weight, but not all weight lost will be fat burned, some of the weight can be water.

4/5 days into my period I lose about 7lbs over 2 days and I'm peeing like a racehorse Grin

I also weigh heavier if I haven't been for a poo.

TeacupDrama · 28/01/2014 15:18

when you were 3 stone heavier you would have needed 300 extra calories a day to stay the same weight now 3 stone lighter you will need less to maintain weight and willhave to cut a bit more to loss it is easier to lose 3 stone from 17st to 14st than to go from 14st to 11st, most people losing weight in a way that is going to stay off start off losing 2-3lb per week then 1-2lb then as get closer to target may take 2 weeks to loss a lb that is normal and sensible

don't be discouraged you have lost 3st which I imagine if you have 2.5st to go to target means yuo have already lost 20% of your original weight which will already have significant health gains for you and these gains will stay even if you never lost another lb you would still be much healthier than a year ago, however if you gave up and put back on that would be lost

it is better to be 2.5 st overweight that 5.5st overweight so it is not worth giving up just because your weight loss had hit a plateau

to truly lose 5.5lbs a week of real fat ( not water etc) you would have to virtually starve and run a marathon

I hope you continue to loss slowly but do not give up the healthy eating
I did read a scientific study which suggested there was a clear link between sleep deprivation and weight gain I can't remember where but it was a reputable medical journal not a celeb magazine

I think if you could sleep 6-7 hours a night instead of 4-5 hours it would be better for you alround

StandingInLine · 28/01/2014 15:20

Don't want to sound crude but have you gone for a number 2 ? The times I haven't gone and I weigh myself I literally gain about 5Ibs !!

RufusTheReindeer · 28/01/2014 16:40

I lost 6lbs in a week, three weeks ago

My maximum was 9lb, on a juice fast

I have been known to gain 8lbs in a week (Christmas)

And once gained 1.5 stone in four weeks

Most rapid gains and losses I would think are quite often down to water

But I've no clue really

JimmyChooChoo · 28/01/2014 16:46

This is why I'm not a big fan of SW/WW as I genuinely believe measuring yourself rather than weighing yourself.

OP it's a huge possibility you've lost inches and your body is tighter/smaller but as soon as you weighed yourself you stopped thinking that's a possibility

Also as others have said it could be water retention, need the loo, have eaten, your clothes and of course muscle weighs more than fat

newmorning · 28/01/2014 16:54

If you're 3 stone overweight, it's almost impossible to lose 5.5 lbs of fat in a week as long you're eating something every day.

On a lengthy strict fast (not recommended!), you'll lose about 7 lbs per week plus an amount of water depending how long you've been fasting. That can mean a total loss of 14 lbs in Week 1 of which 7 lbs is fat, and total loss of 10 lbs in Week 2 of which 7 lbs is fat.

The 5.5 lb weight loss was not a 5.5 lb fat loss. It was a fat+fluid loss.

As you continue dieting, any 'cheating' can make you hold onto fluids with the result that you can immediately gain a significant amount of weight, but only a small part of that gain will be fat. Unfortunately, the weight gained from a day's cheating can take a long time to shift as the body does not like being under-fed and will grab and hold onto whatever it can whenever it can.

TeacupDrama · 28/01/2014 18:28

no poo is 5lbs, unless you have a medical problem or a very very nasty bug of diarrhoea and vomiting when even if slim you maby lose 5lbs in a week due to keep nothing in the digestive system but that is not healthy

I think 1-2lb a week is the most that is healthy unless obese rather than overweight if you weigh 20st then 5lb a week loss would be viable it is not at 12-13st though

VelvetSpoon · 28/01/2014 18:36

I didn't expect to lose 5lb again this week. But to end up basically back at sq 1 and not know why or how is horrible.

I have spent all of today thinking how fat I am. Worrying that I'll never lose this weight. A dress (last worn in Nov) didn't fit today, couldn't do up the zip. I feel disgusting. I've drunk 1.5 litres of water which has just made my stomach bloat, so now I look even fatter.

OP posts:
TeacupDrama · 28/01/2014 18:46

I am not convinced about drinking so much at all there is no medical evidence to support it;

the only medical evidence seems to suggest for average adult 1.5-2 litres of fluid a day this includes all sources such as soup water rich foods like cucumber as well as the more obvious drinks
more liquid is not required unless doing something requiring huge amounts of exertion like road digging marathon running or the weather is really hot

TeacupDrama · 28/01/2014 18:49

but its not square 1 if you are 3 stone lighter is it? I am sorry you are so despondent about it and I understand the frustration of not losing any weight for 3 months it is a bit soul destroying

several people have suggested reasons for recent blip, but maybe slimming world is not working for you for some reason anymore maybe your pasta/bread/potato portions are too big or something but eating 1-2 cakes or a few glasses orf wine does not make you put on 1/2 a stone

hopefully a food diary will help but you have to eat and drink sensibly

Littleen · 28/01/2014 18:54

you mainly lose water in the start, and so it's very easy to put all the water back on due to various reasons. Keep at it and it'll shift :) I spent 6 months working hard to even start losing weight at all, so know how difficult it can be!

VelvetSpoon · 28/01/2014 19:28

I do eat and drink sensibly. I hadn't drunk any alcohol for about 6 weeks before Saturday. I don't sit gorging myself. I've done SW for long enough to know what to eat - I didn't eat any more than the week previously, but instead of losing, or even staying the same, I gained.

I have written down all todays food. I'll do that all this week. I can only hope I lose something. And then don't gain it all the week after.

OP posts:
higgle · 30/01/2014 13:54

OP, small regular losses are more likely to last than the larger amounts which are mainly down to fluid etc. If you were only to lose 1/2 lb a week you would have lost nearly 2 stone by this time next year. You can't consistently go down 3lb a week unless you are very heave indeed to start with. I weigh 3 stone less this week than when I started my SW journey this time last year, I'm a comfortable size 10 now and I was edging into size 16 last January. It might have been slow but it was worth it.

WhereIsMyHat · 30/01/2014 14:27

I can loose/ gain that in a day so I'm not in the slightest bit surprised.

Lillilly · 30/01/2014 14:44

I lost 5lb between yesterday afternoon and this morning. usually I only weigh myself naked in the morning, that is the lowest time!
