to wonder how the fuck I've put on 4.5lb in a week?!

VelvetSpoon · 27/01/2014 19:34

I am trying to lose weight through Slimming World.

Took a break for a few weeks over Xmas, gained a bit. Started again back on plan, after first week I lost 2lb. Second week I lost 5.5lb.

This week, I put on 4.5lb Shock

I have stuck to plan - I had one day at the weekend where I wasn't 100% and prob went over my syns as had several glasses of wine, but other than that, on the other 6 days I was fine.

I am now almost afraid to eat. I have 2.5-3st to lose, I am terrified of being stuck going backwards and forwards at this weight forever :( Esp as I have no idea how I gained this week!

Is slimming the diet with lots of free foods? I am doing weight watchers (old pro points) I'm "allowed" to eat as much fruit as I want but the weeks when I eat tons of fruit I don't loose weight. Have you tried counting out how many calories you are eating, even if your eating foods which are "free" if your eating 2500 calories you won't loose weight.

ikeaismylocal · 27/01/2014 20:32

Oh and I think that wine induced weight stays only for a couple of days, I used my weekly points to drink some wine thursday and frieday (thursday is weigh in day) I was up friday morning but by sunday morning I had lost 2 pounds.

CheckpointCharlie · 27/01/2014 20:33

Could doing a food diary help? When I go off target I do that and it helps. Also I do not have syns, I know I can if I want but I drink wine at the weekend so kind of use the whole weeks syns then!

VelvetSpoon · 27/01/2014 20:37

I haven't had a drink since before Xmas. The 3 wines were a treat. Wish I hadn't bothered.

I've lost just over 3st already, I had within 6 months of starting. But I can't seem to move forward and lose any more.

I just feel so disappointed. Meh.

I know it's hard OP but try not to worry about one weigh in. If you're up again next week then maybe you need to reassess. However if say you're down 3 lbs next week that means you've lost 4.5 lbs overall in 3 weeks (or whatever) then you know you're going in the right direction.

Also as PP said if you're weigh in is Monday you can get off results because of deviance during the weekend. I always weigh myself Fridays but sometimes on Monday can be a few pounds up just for weekend.

addictedtosugar · 27/01/2014 20:43

Orange

Errr, about 300g.

Don't ask.

TempusFuckit · 27/01/2014 20:43

Calm down Velvet! It's just one week and as pp have said, it could be down to anything. Play the long game.

Do you exercise? An extra workout could help you feel like you're taking back control.

hugoagogo · 27/01/2014 20:51

I am at a similar stage to you by the sounds of it.

I have lost just over 3 stone since the summer, but it has really stagnated the last month or so, but I just keep going, I really had diet fatigue last week, but this week I am 2lbs down at last.

There's no point getting all frustrated- what are you going to do? Just give up have a pizza and resign yourself to never losing the weight?

No, you just keep on going safe in the knowledge that it will creep down eventually. As long as you don't give up.

Ps I was serious about the raspberries, they really do help.

VelvetSpoon · 27/01/2014 20:58

It is 'just one week' but like I said upthread, I've basically lost nothing since end of October.

That is massively disheartening.

I do some exercise. I work ft so don't have time for more than 1 class a week. I walk lots anyway as I don't drive.

TeacupDrama · 27/01/2014 21:00

3 glasses of wine can not putr on 4.5lbs, I just think the 5.5 the week before was probably false it is really hard to lose 5.5lbs in a week unless you are really heavy like over 20stones,

a bit of weight in women can be water retention and it is normal for a woman even with no weight to lose in healthy range to still vary in weight by 3-7lb over a monthly cycle

happybubblebrain · 27/01/2014 21:04

My weight loss usually goes like this:

Week 1 - 2lb lost
Week 2 - 1lb lost
Week 3 - 0lb lost
Week 4 - 1lb gained
Week 5 - 2lb gained
Week 6 - given up

I feel your pain.

HellonHeels · 27/01/2014 21:08

You've lost overall three pounds in three weeks. That's a good healthy rate of loss and nothing to be disappointed about. The big losses are exciting but a big drop is IMO rarely an accurate reflection of what's going on in your body.

If you keep going, losing a pound a week you'll be pretty much at your target weight by September.

Laura0806 · 27/01/2014 21:18

I suspect you didn't really loose 5.5lb the week before and that it was that which was the illusion. Just keep going. Sometimes you find you loose nothing one week and double the next, you will have done some good, keep it up and the next few weeks I bet you see a difference

HellonHeels · 27/01/2014 21:19

My top tips for weightloss if you get a bit stuck are:

Do something different for a week - eat different foods, especially if you're in a routine of eating very similar meals most days.

Drink more water

Get plenty of rest, go to bed early, do something that reduces your stress levels (meditation, yoga, swimming, exercise) There's research that indicates that stress makes it harder to lose fat.

Exercise; if you already exercise, do something different, shake up the routine.

Weight training / resistance training - lifting weights encourages the body to burn fat.

Measure yourself - measurements are a better indicator of fat loss than the numbers on the scale.

BillyBanter · 27/01/2014 21:22

It is more accurate to weigh yourself every day (at the same time) and take the average weight for the week.

FudgefaceMcZ · 27/01/2014 21:23

I put on a fucktonne with PMT. Not like a couple of pounds, I mean a few kilos, enough to go from 'normal' to 'overweight' BMI overnight ffs. I didn't used to, but according to GP hormonal stuff can go completely mad in 30s.

VelvetSpoon · 27/01/2014 21:28

I'm writing down every single thing I eat and drink this week.

I drink 2l of water a day. I was told it was bad for you to drink much more than that? So not sure if I should up that really.

I can't vary too much what I eat as I am at work in the day and have nowhere to prepare or heat food, or keep it cool, and I am off meat currently. I will try and eat a different dinner every day though.

With exercise, I can only do my usual class, I might have time to do half an hour at home over the weekend but that's about it.

The one thing I definitely can (and never normally) do is go to bed early. I haven't had more than 4-5 hours sleep per night in over a week.

OP posts:
HellonHeels · 27/01/2014 21:38

Sounds pretty good, Velvet! If nothing else the extra sleep will feel good Grin

Can you eat fish, eggs, tofu, pulses? I rarely eat meat but do eat all of those and it gives nice variety. Does slimming world let you eat as many vegetables as you want? If it does, I'd bulk up my dinners with extra veg so you're actually eating more.

Weightloss is a bloody slog but you've done fantastically well, don't let this little blip get you down.

Artandco · 27/01/2014 21:44

What are you eating and how are you excercising? It sounds very carb heavy and not much excercise.

Lunch ideas:
Lots of roast veg ie courgette/ carrot/ aubergine etc with a little couscous
Mixed bean salad. Add tuna from tin at lunch time
Soup in thermos

Most thermos pots will keep food either cold or hot so no need for fridge/ cooker

Excercise, if you can't do anything out of home for whatever reason:
Fast Walk/ cycle to and from work
Run up and down stairs 20 times every eve with weights
Shred DVD

Is there a reason you can't do more than one class a week? If children can you take them with you for run ( either in pram or on scooter/ bike if older). Or get a bike with kids seat.

VelvetSpoon · 27/01/2014 22:01

I don't get home from work til after 7 most eves (I leave at 7.30am). The one night I have a class I leave work on time, get home at 6.30, have a quick snack and chat to the DC, then out til 9. Honestly as a LP I can't do that more than once a week. At weekends I have shopping, cleaning and other house stuff to do. A gym is opening near me in a few weeks (v cheap introductory rate) I may try and join. I have a few exercise DVDs I can do but at present am sleeping so badly I don't have the energy (I was doing 30 mins of those every other day in the summer). I already walk a fair bit most days, more at weekends.

I'm not a fan of eggs, do eat fish but mainly salmon or tuna. SW is unlimited veg, I do eat loads. I make stuff in the slow cooker, veg and stock, and try to bulk it out with pulses. It ends up like a very thick soup!

What I eat is pretty much as per SW plan. Lots of fruit and veg, yoghurt, small amount of cheese, rice, pasta, etc

lisalisa · 27/01/2014 22:04

velvet spoon - I have never said this before on MN but are you me? I am also trying with slimming world - been on diet for a few weeks and like you doing well ( congrats by the way). Have a bit more than you to lose in total though. This last week I was aboslutely horrified to get on the scales and see a 4.5lb gain. Why I could not fathom? I have comforted muyself with water retention as the only explanation.

What we do know is this - if we follow the diet it will and must work , right? See what happens at next weigh in. I'll bet you lose the pounds x

RufusTheReindeer · 27/01/2014 22:04

Slimming world doesn't work for me, as a veggie it's too carb heaven and apparently my body doesn't like it!!

If I follow it to the letter I gain weight but if I cut back on the amounts of carbs (don't cut them out completely just smaller portions) it seems to work

You're not taking Nytol or anything are you?

TheDetective · 28/01/2014 01:46

Does Nytol affect weight loss?!

Velvet. I am the same. Lost 3st from April to October.

Knew I'd not lose til January after that as several birthdays including mine, plus Christmas, I knew it wasn't realistic to expect a loss.

I sts pretty much til the 2 Xmas weeks, when I gained 5.5lb. 2 weigh ins later I've got rid of that. But now I seem to be sts and its still the same fecking weight I was at the end of oct. GRRRRRR!!

I'm remaining optimistic. I've another 3 stone to lose. So I have to!!!!
