to wonder how the fuck I've put on 4.5lb in a week?!

I am trying to lose weight through Slimming World.

Took a break for a few weeks over Xmas, gained a bit. Started again back on plan, after first week I lost 2lb. Second week I lost 5.5lb.

This week, I put on 4.5lb Shock

I have stuck to plan - I had one day at the weekend where I wasn't 100% and prob went over my syns as had several glasses of wine, but other than that, on the other 6 days I was fine.

I am now almost afraid to eat. I have 2.5-3st to lose, I am terrified of being stuck going backwards and forwards at this weight forever :( Esp as I have no idea how I gained this week!

Are you drinking enough water? If I don't drink at least 3 litres a day I can put on 2lbs in 1 day!!!

I have lost 24lbs since October and really attribute the consistent weight loss of 2lbs a week for the first 10 weeks to a massively increased intake of water.

aquashiv · 28/01/2014 02:00

Really a turd can weigh nearly half a stone?

Does anyone ever say that at weigh in

UseHerName · 28/01/2014 06:35

whats this about nytol?! Confused Confused

PonceyPeas · 28/01/2014 06:43

I weigh myself about 3 times a week (through habit mainly) - my weight fluctuates between 3-4 pounds. It's all due to water retention.

Don't get disheartened. Stick to the diet and you'll probably find that you're 5lb lighter next week!

VelvetSpoon · 28/01/2014 06:52

No Nytol whatsoever, I do sleep badly but don't take anything for it, never have.

I will persevere, but it is bloody disheartening. And I am fearful of what the scales will say next week, another gain would be the final straw.

OP posts:
resilientmaterial · 28/01/2014 07:00

Nytol can affect weight loss, yes.

frenchfancy · 28/01/2014 07:03

Velvet It must be very disheartening after all your hard work but what ever you do do not throw in the towel and give up dieting all together, if you do you will just put the weight back on. You are doing this for you, you are worth it do not give up.

Having said that if SW is no longer working maybe you could try something different. I do 5:2 and someone else on the 5:2 threads lost several stone with SW only to stall. She changed over to 5:2 and kept losing (and is now at target).

I am trying not to be evangelistic about 5:2 as I know no diet is perfect for everyone, but it really does work. It is slow and steady, but I don't remember anyone on the threads putting on 4 lbs in a week.

Take a look at the 5:2 support thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/1975142-The-5-2-thread-number-37-Having-our-cake-batter-off-the-spoon-15-calories-per-lick-thanks-MFP-and-eating-it-too-tomorrow

VelvetSpoon · 28/01/2014 07:11

If I stick rigidly to it this week and gain, I will feel v tempted to give up completely, what's the point if I'm never going to get below where I was in Oct? :(

If I do keep on, I have to stick with SW, as without a weekly weigh in, I may as well not bother. I don't have enough self discipline to lose anything on my own.

OP posts:
RufusTheReindeer · 28/01/2014 08:17

I went to sw weigh ins for the pressure and support but didn't do the diet

It's seems weird but you still get the information, support, recipes which are usually low calorie etc

FourArms · 28/01/2014 08:24

Rigid weeks used to end up with minimal losses for me for some reason.

Are you doing EE, red or green? Try red, it works fastest usually and you can still have lots of veg & some carbs. Try reducing fruit too if you're eating lots.

FourArms · 28/01/2014 08:25

I went to SW for 12w for weigh ins, but I'm firmly in the zone now. I'm low carbing / doing The Harcombe Diet. It does map across to SW red days (ex-consultant).

VelvetSpoon · 28/01/2014 08:41

Red wouldn't work for me as I don't eat much meat or fish - once/twice a week at most, and then I have to force myself to cook it as the smell of raw meat makes me gag.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 28/01/2014 08:47

sounds daft but are you eating enough? if you eat too little yourbody goes into startvation mode and retains fat or somehing I have just restarted the SW regime, not going to classes but have lost 8Lb first week and 3 second, sounds good but probably all water, I have 4 -5 stone to lose and it always goes well at the beginning. I feel your pain as I know it will slow down now for me and even though I know a pound a week is still a loss it feels as if it will take forever when the loss goes down. I really want to persevere this time though. I try not to get too hung up on weight as long as I am feeling better and my clothes are getting looser, my friend is getting very thin but exercises a lot and her weight has not moved for a few weeks but she definately looks thinner and has gone down in dress size Confused stick with it as ultimately you will feel healthier and will lose.

VelvetSpoon · 28/01/2014 10:48

Thing is I have stuck with it since end of Oct and am still where I was then, still over 2.5st from target and my clothes feel no different. I still look fat and disgustingly flabby, nothing is changing. I feel completely stuck.

People have stopped saying well done on my weight loss because I haven't lost anything for so long, those I haven't seen for a while I know expect me to be thinner than I am, but I haven't changed at all. I'm still a fat lump.

MrsPMT · 28/01/2014 11:00

You have done so well though.

I think maybe the 5.5 lbs loss the previous week was false, thats a lot for one week.

I also don't eat much meat but do like eggs & fish, I only really have one pasta meal a week.

Potato is better than pasta imo, so baked potato is always a good option with tuna & salad or boiled egg & salad.

Following a healthy eating plan (not a 'diet' as such) I lost 1 & half stone before xmas & haven't lost any since but am hoping eventually I will start to lose again if I keep at it & up my exercise.

HeadfirstThroughTheTimeVortex · 28/01/2014 11:00

Don't give up, I would advise calorie counting everything you eat during the week, "free" foods can be very deceptive, especially fruit.

The only thing that has worked for me is calorie counting, it sounds boring (it is) but I know what I'm eating. I don't low carb as such but I have reduced the amount of carbs I'm eating and upped my veg and protein intake. I'm losing 2-3 lbs a week steadily.

I'm veggie too, so carbs can be easier for lunch (like cheese and crackers) but then I will only have protein like omelette or quorn fillets or tofu with veg, but no potato/rice etc.

HeadfirstThroughTheTimeVortex · 28/01/2014 11:05

"Started again back on plan, after first week I lost 2lb. Second week I lost 5.5lb.

This week, I put on 4.5lb "

That makes 3lbs in 3 weeks! that would be 52 lbs loss in a year, or 3 stone 8lbs.

That is pretty steady and effective.

HeadfirstThroughTheTimeVortex · 28/01/2014 11:08

If you keep a food diary you can see what types of foods you have been eating on the weeks you have lost more, also on weeks you perhaps haven't lost as much as you'd have liked. Losing weight is is different for everyone.

Good luck, you've done really well so try not to lose heart.

VelvetSpoon · 28/01/2014 11:12

It's pretty shit given most of my group have lost 4st or more in 6-9 months, and got to target, or are about to hit it.

I'm the only person who started as long ago as I did who hasn't hit target. Thinking I might have another year to go is pretty depressing.

OP posts:
Owllady · 28/01/2014 11:19

I hAve given up on sw and gone back to ww as the same happens with me. I just think I am allowed to eat too much on it. I find smaller portions, of ww, suits me better tbh, rather than the optimising approach of as. It Inc works for ALOT of people though - I am just not one of them unfortunately

HeadfirstThroughTheTimeVortex · 28/01/2014 11:31

The slower you lose the more likely you are to keep it off. You are losing which is great, how quickly others lose it is irrelevant.

A year isn't a long time really.

What's more depressing, reaching your goal in a year, or giving up and being 3 stone heavier in a year? (which I've done myself Sad )

Plus if you look at what you're eating your weight loss could speed up.

If SW isn't working for you try something else :)

Owllady · 28/01/2014 11:33

I lost 1lb a week with ww 51lb over the course of the year
I need to shift some I have put back on though Blush

HellonHeels · 28/01/2014 11:41

Don't compare yourself to other people. All people and bodies are different. You are so much more than a number on a scale. Those numbers shouldn't dictate your self worth.

The self-hating thoughts you express are really horrible Sad Praise yourself, acknowledge your achievements - you've lost more than three stone!

It's not uncommon to hit a plateau when you've been losing over a long period of time. It's your body getting used to its new weight, the change in intake, all kinds of things.

I've never done SW, only weightwatchers. Is there a chat session in the class? I imagine if you discuss this plateau-ing there will be others in your group who've had the same thing happen. Talk it through. Don't give up.

tumbletumble · 28/01/2014 11:51

This thread is a really good illustration of why so many diets fail. You've lost 3lb in 3 weeks, which is a good sustainable long term aim. And yet you're about to give up! Hang in there OP - you can do it!!

starlight1234 · 28/01/2014 12:10

Do a food diary take it with you....If you have gained show it consultant...It may be something you are overlooking..

Also increase protiens...Carbs are fine on SW...Except bread...Are you having all your HEA and B

Also make sure you eat plenty super free..It all helps
