I have an iPhone 5 on contract. About 6 months into a 2 year contract. First time I have had a phone on contract, always preferred the flexibility of PAYG in case I was having a skint month. Seemed like I was topping up loads though and decided to take it out when we had a bit more money than we do now. Circumstances have changed quite a bit so can no longer afford it so well. Can and will manage cos would have to pay £600 to get out of it.
Quite keen to sell it and buy an older iPhone (3GS or possibly 4 if I can find a good deal) which can be bought cheaply on ebay. This will free up a couple of hundred quid which would be very useful.

A few things I'm not sure on

  • is this actually allowed? I'm not too fussed if it isn't because I have no intention of ditching the contract, so can't see any negative repercussions for the buyer or the phone company. Maybe there is something I haven't considered though.
  • do iPhone 3GSs use a big/normal sim unlike the mini sim in an iPhone 5? (What does an iPhone 4 take?)
  • if I need a different size SIM card, would the phone company (3) send me one? Anyone done this?
  • can I still use FaceTime on 3GS or 4?

Really want to stay on iPhone cos we use FaceTime to stay in touch with relatives (we have a 6 week old baby).

Thanks :)

Yes you can sell phone and use a different one. As your looking an iPhone I don't think it would make much difference.

iPhone 3GS uses a normal big sim card
iPhone 4 uses a micro sim
iPhone 5 uses a nano sim.

They should be able to send you out a new sim.

Yes the iPhone 4 has FaceTime not sure about 3GS.

Now if it was me I would say get the iPhone 4. As a really old iPhone may be really really slow and would piss you off, whereas a 4 won't be as bad.

Have you rang 3 and told them you can't afford it could it be reduced?

Thank you :) I think I'll go for the 4 anyway if I can find a good enough deal because I heard they can become really slow like you said. I can only reduce it by 2 or 3 pounds a month but would be losing lots of mins texts etc so not worth it!

Will contact 3 and ask them to send out a new sim :)

Do you really use all the minutes/texts?

I'm with Orange/EE and they have an app which shows me how many minutes I use, does 3 have something like that so you could see if you might be better off that way. If not then makes no difference.

I bought my last iPhone off eBay, so maybe try that but make sure it comes from uk. :)
