dreamies, my cat is an addict

my cat had dreamies at Christmas in her stocking from Santa Paws. ( ok I know) anyway she's absolutly addicted now. I have to keep buying them and she's always trying to get her paw into the cupboard to steal some. she howls and miaows at us all constantly if we pass the cupboard.

are they a cat drug? should I make her go cold turkey?

advice please cat owners.

We recently discovered that our cat goes wild for Pukka Nighttime tea. It seems valerian has a similar effect on some cats as catnip. He snatches the teabag from my cup and starts rolling around in it. Once he ate the little paper label at the end of the string, weird.

WhenIsItHappyTime · 30/01/2015 06:44

Another Dreamies addict here. (The cat not me!!)
He sits staring at the cupboard where they are and went through a stage of not eating his wet food unless it had dreamies on it Hmm
Now he has a treat ball which makes him work for them. Hes like Beckham kicking it round the lounge!

Newyearsunresolutions · 30/01/2015 09:09

When my cat was a kitten and went out for the first time I used to give him a couple of dreamies every time he came in. This progressed to getting him back in when I wanted him to with a shake of the packet and calling his name.

Two years later he still wants them every time he comes in. He will walk outside for about 5 seconds then come back in and expect treats. God forbid you don't give him his crack when he comes in. He will sit on the dining table and if you try and walk past him he will swipe at you with claws. If you get past him he will follow you around the house tapping your ankles.

He has found and shredded a couple of packets and I have found him under the desk in pure ecstasy.

Psyco cat can take or leave dreamies, unlike the black beast that rules my mothers house.

Catnip on the other hand sends him totally idiotic. He has been known to launch himself at whoever is holding the bag. Weirdly his tail normally gets beaten up as he seem to think it's trying to steal his catnip. Then he gets the munchies.

Someone had the bright idea of buying him catnip bubbles for Christmas. He threw himself at the pot spilling it over the rug and rolled in it. Ended up with a destroyed rug where he shredded it and he had to be rinsed as it looked like his eyes were going to rotate into the back of his head, a bit like the little girl in the exorcist film.

???? crack for cats Grin

ilovechristmas1 · 30/01/2015 10:48

mine is the same though i buy the Asda own

the bloody cat wont eat his food till he has had his fix

he also likes the meat sticks

agree i wish i had never bought them

Hatespiders · 30/01/2015 10:53

Ours won't touch Dreamies. But they adore Felix Goody Bags. I limit these to just a tiny handful now and then. They actually make one of our Siamese cats sick. I think they're covered in some sort of animal waste derivative which smells irresistible, but I'm sure they should only be given in moderation.
We try to vary our cats' diet with wet sachets (Felix), cooked chicken, tuna in spring water, boiled cod portions, raw mince and Iams biscuits for senior cats. That way, we hope they're getting a balance of nutrients and as few chemicals as possible.

yoshipoppet · 30/01/2015 11:10

I keep Dreamies in the cupboard and they are very useful, especially if I have to give meds or flea treatment. Shake the packet, cats come to kitchen. No chasing round the house or garden.
Fortunately they haven't yet worked out how to open the cupboard door.

WhenIsItHappyTime · 30/01/2015 15:31

Our cat also has some catnip spray and if you spray it on his toy mouse he goes really weird. Almost tries to cuddle the mouse to death,

I once missed the mouse and sprayed some on the wooden floor, the cat looked like he was doing the moonwalk trying to roll himself along the floor Grin

I do wonder what they put into Dreamies to make them so irresistible

zukiecat · 30/01/2015 15:38

My 3 cats all love Dreamies too, duck flavour in particular, but they don't howl for them until they see me going into their food cupboard, I usually give them some once a day and they will mooch for a wee while afterwards but then they'll go off and sleep or play.

I have one who actually prefers Whiskas Kitbits to Dreamies, she also likes what I call cat yogurt, it's a chicken flavour liquid stuff, looks and smells vile but she goes daft for it.

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 30/01/2015 15:40

Ah yes - Dreamies are kitty crack Grin

We should set up a support group!

And one of my parents' Siamese is a catnip addict - anything that smells of it drives him mad, and I bought him a catnip mouse with actual catnip in it - it took him approx. 5 mins to rip it open and get to the good stuff Grin

He then lay around with a ripped piece of the mouse between his paws looking stoned...

zukiecat · 30/01/2015 15:49

My cats also go daft for catnip,

I have bags I bought from Cats Protection, and they just go crazy for them, I think they look so cute, rolling about looking stoned Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/01/2015 15:53

I have four cats and they all love them, but the weirdo eldest one woukd rather have a mushroom.

Mammanat222 · 30/01/2015 15:53

My girl wouldn't lower herself to actually beg for them, she prefers for them to be 'presented' to her.

She hears the packet from anywhere is the house though and like a ninja there she is.

Mammanat222 · 30/01/2015 15:56

My cat has never had any interest in catnip. I think its only something like 80% of cats that are affected by it.

Stinkle · 30/01/2015 15:59

We have a Dreamies addict too.

She won't lower herself to beg, but I frequently find her trying to bust into the kitchen drawer. I lost a packet a few weeks ago and found it empty behind the couch

We have another cat who couldn't care less about them, won't eat them even if we offer - he prefers cheese and has actually swiped cheese off a bit of cheese and toast that I was lifting to my mouth and steals mini cheddars out of your packet

vivideye · 30/01/2015 16:25

My poor cat is an addict. It is the only way I can fetch her in from the garden when she pretends she can't hear me. One shake and she's there. ........sad really. Grin

Igneococcus · 31/01/2015 07:59

When I first met dp he had a cat who would try to get to your plate of food just to eat the broccoli and mashed potatoes and ignore the chicken or other meat on the plate.
Our current cat will risk life and limb to get to the full fat Turkish yogurt that I have taken a fancy to recently.

CelibacyCakeAndElevatorMuzac · 31/01/2015 08:07

Dreamies, definitely cat crack.

My 2 go nuts for it.

Evil Cat is partial to a bit of popcorn or salt & vinegar crisps!!

Ginger Cat will take your hand off for a bit of cauliflower which he then guards like prey, growling and hunched over as if it were a rat!

Badgerlady · 31/01/2015 08:19

After reading this thread, I decided I was in danger of severe kitten neglect as I'd never given my two (4 month old) kittens dreamies. I bought some whilst stocking up on so expensive it may as well contain gold nuggets cat litter.

I offered them one each. Feeling like I was pushing drugs outside a primary school

Dtabbykitten sniffed and ate one enthusiastically. Dblackkitten sniffed walked away sniffed and then ate it again with a feline shrug.

No signs of addiction. Yet.

Mind you they can take or leave catnip. Scrunch up some foil and they act like kittens possessed.

FamiliesShareGerms · 31/01/2015 08:28

Neither of ours are bothered about them -will eat them but don't beg for them. Whiskas Dentabites , however...

QueenFuri · 31/01/2015 08:34

I spilt a pack of dreamies this morning getting the cats breakfast. About half a pack cat thought it was Christmas and is looking quite pleased with herself. I did try to pick them up but she kept batting my hand away as she gobbled them Grin .

Redhead11 · 31/01/2015 08:41

Mine got them for Christmas from the NDN and i have given them a few once - and i can instantly see the potential for addiction! My XH gave a previous cat 'sprinkles' on his wet food from when he was tiny and the little shit darling wouldn't then eat anything without the sprinkles! I am being very wary about giving my two more Dreamies any time soon!
