To think the term Schemie is even more reprehensible than Chav?

After reading another thread where baby names are being declared Chav or schemie by the op and a few others my blood is boiling a bit.

I live in Scotland and the phrase schemie gets used interchangeably with ned and chav.

I think schemie is by far the worst of the three. Chav and ned are nasty terms of abuse, but refer to a type of behaviour/manner of dress /lifestyle that the (ignorant) speaker is describing.

Schemie goes a step further (a housing scheme is the term used in Scotland for council estate) implies that an undesirable person or behaviour in type of behaviour is exclusive to and representive of people who live in local authority housing. My mother, grandparents and a lot of my friends grew up in council homes and not a single one of them display behaviour which could be described as 'schemie'

HaymitchAbarnathy · 23/01/2014 11:31

Yes, the concept of chumming someone, apparently this is not a thing in glasgow according to my dh. That's one I just assumed was universal!

MorrisZapp · 23/01/2014 11:32

Ah, an Edinburgh childhood. Where HOW? Means 'why?' And 'HOW NO?' means 'why not?'.

I remember the milk being delivered by horse drawn cart.

HaymitchAbarnathy · 23/01/2014 11:35

How come was what we always said for why.
How come you won't chum me into town?
how come you won't bag off with ma pal?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/01/2014 11:37

"how come you won't bag off with ma pal"..that's a classy line right there Grin

Weegiemum · 23/01/2014 11:39

I taught at the WHEC for a year - one parent used to come with her minders who would stand outside the classroom on parents night, as she was a notorious local dealer.

HaymitchAbarnathy · 23/01/2014 11:40

Because he's got a really Shan pair of trainers on is the answer of course.

MorrisZapp · 23/01/2014 11:46

Seems like a lifetime ago.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/01/2014 13:24

I did have a sheltered life.

Went to Southhouse only once to a pal's house.

Was threatened and chased in street.

Weelady77 · 23/01/2014 14:10
