AIBU?

AIBU to expect a 'please' from a cashier when they ask me 4 money?

I was in Marks and Spencers yesterday I had some rude cashier asking me to move my basket off the conveyer belt without even saying please.I thought I would let it go even though I was niggled by her barking an order at me and being so rude.I moved the basket and said nothing. When it came to paying the woman she asked for the money without saying 'Please'.I was so fed up with her by now that I pulled her up on it and tore a strip off of her.She subsequently apologised and I thought that would be the last of it.
I went back in this evening and went to another cashier and low and behold the same thing happened there when she asked for the money. There was no 'Please' I thought (ffs) what's going on here? I asked her whether it was Marks and Spencers policy to be so impolite when asking for the money when buying goods? She said no but she was not obliged to say 'please'.

I thought ok then if you want to argue the point lets get a manger involved.Along came a manager and he said to me that he didn't know what all the fuss was about and that the cashiers had done nothing wrong by not saying 'Please' when asking for the money and he said he would not be reprimanding them on it.He told me that by the cashier saying 'thank you' and 'have a nice day' was surfice and please was not needed.

I mean to say what is this world coming to? I was brought up to say 'please' and 'thank you' and i'm not going to stop now and i expect people to say please and thank you to me especially if I am a customer at Marks and Spencers being served by a cashier.

I will be making an official complaint tomorrow to the store manager and head office. Your views please.TYIA

Using a small sample of 2 people who served me today, neither of them said please. They were both polite and pleasant though. My conclusion, please is not necessary for politeness.

troll hunters piss me off - report the thread wait for mn to investigate

op.

the manner in which the request for your payment, the tone of voice and general demeanor is as important - and in my view sufficient in some instances - perhaps most instances.

If those things were not in place and the general level of customer service throughout the transaction was poor, then you would have quarrel with M&S

However if the cashier was generally amiable, then YABU.

It would have to be something very very bad for me to report someone to the manager as that person could lose their job.

Using a still smaller sample of the one person who served me today - she very definitely did say "£14.60 please", and at the end we exchanged warm smiles which reached our eyes. Do I shop in better places than you Majestic? [innocent look]

Oh hmc don't boast about your posh shopping. All right I confess I am not talking about waitrose or m&s. It was a little booth at the tube station, and then slightly grotty cafeteria at work. So yes you win on poshness if that makes you happy. Grin

I don't remember what people SAY to me on a daily basis but I remember how they make me FEEL.
So when a cashier is putting my shopping through and she engages and smiles at my little boys and we make chit chat and they says 'so that will be so and so pounds' with a smile - should I think she's rude ? Of course not.
If however she has a face like thunder, doesn't engage, doesn't smile etc then whatever she says/does is rude.

It's all relative isn't it?
The OP said that the cashier wished her a good day and said thank you - that shows to me that the cashier was lovely and the OP was extremely rude and out of order.

If this isn't a wind up then the OP comes across as unhinged.

This has to be the most hilarious thread I've ever read. Especially Harold's comment "actually I'm a bit of a c**t."
Spat my drink out at that. I couldn't use the full word though, what with being "spiritually gifted" and all that.

OP you are not wrong to expect a cashier to say please. Unfortunately you have walked right into a fight club and the best thing you can do is walk back out again. Nobody will listen to your point of view because bullying, name-calling and swearing is too good a release for some poor folk on here.
