I realise it's FB and therefore a silly problem but.

Jeremy Fuckface Clarkson posted a vile picture to his twitter today of his equally hateful Top Gear colleagues holding a sign saying 'Gay cunt' next to his ugly sleeping mush Hmm .

He promptly deleted the photo.

A relatively new FB friend (fellow mum on school run) has just shared it. With a smiley face.

I am livid and tempted to comment. The use of gay as a pejorative term is one of my major bugbears and is, imo, completely unacceptable.

She has form for making me Hmm . She referred to a little mixed race boy in our DDs class as a 'half boy' in a conversation we had and I was too Shock to even process let alone challenge what she said.

I have to see her every day. She seemed like a nice person.

WWYD?

Do you have any gay friends/relatives? Or are you gay?

I have dear friends (men and women) who are gayer than gay and I'm sure most of them wouldn't take offence at that pic.

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 00:22

Well I would and many other would and guess what JC knows that.

Freedom of speech is a fine thing but it comes with responsibility. If you post something knowing full fucking well that it will upset large numbers of people because you think it might make a few people laugh then you're a bit of a dick in my book.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The guys who created the pic are very much at fault in that respect.

However, I wouldn't condemn a woman with no known homophobic inclinations just because she sent a friend a pic with a naughty word in it.

It's quite likely she'd still have sent it if it had said 'Yorkshire' instead of 'gay'

She probably didn't realise the offence the word can cause to people who find its improper use objectionable.

Thants · 18/01/2014 00:32

Comment. We must stand up to prejudice.

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 00:34

I think she's probably ignorant. Which is why I posted that the OP should just get rid. You can't tell someone that they're ignorance has offends you without opening up a whole can of worms with them.

SuzanneUK · 18/01/2014 00:36

We must stand up to prejudice.

But not to pee.

evelynj · 18/01/2014 00:36

Hear hear that's all.

What you say May not matter to those that you post it for but there could be countless others reading it that something resonates with. Whatever that saying is that 'all that needs is for good people to do nothing'

I think we should stand up for our convictions and try not to be offended if it doesn't change opinions. You don't know what's happening in. The background and we should all live in hope :)

BohemianGirl · 18/01/2014 03:15

If anyone would like to see the photo its here:

www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/jeremy-clarkson-forced-to-apologise-after-posting-gay-ct-picture-on-twitter-9066302.html

Now, having seen the photo perhaps the thread could get its self into context?

missingmumxox · 18/01/2014 03:29

Surely a sign with gay cunt by a man is a oxymoron?
Just saying!

SuzanneUK · 18/01/2014 08:38

For the benefit of all those offended by the pic, I have produced an alternative version.

The previous link has to be copied and pasted into your browswer but don't despair - this link works by clicking it:

YourMotherChucksRocksInHull · 18/01/2014 08:47

"half boy" would have made me back away and avoid her forever more.

It really doesn't matter that your DC are friends. Let them have their own friendships without getting involved with the parents.

Bartman · 18/01/2014 09:20

I saw the pic on Facebook - it was pretty funny!

Dawndonnaagain · 18/01/2014 09:27

Fuck, I thought we'd got rid of you Suzanne

  1. The PC brigade would be the ones that ensure people are not racist, sexist or homophobic.
  2. The people that use PC brigade are people who are racist, sexist and homophobic and get pissed off that they can't say it publicly.

It's one thing to be homophobic and another simply to be aware that a great many men feel insulted if somebody suggests they're gay or even that they look gay.
This is exactly the reason it should not be a perjorative term, if you can't see that if heterosexual men didn't get upset or feel insulted then it wouldn't be a problem then you're an idiot. It is not one thing to be homophobic and another to feel insulted, that's homophobic. Numpty.
Essentially it was not a clever joke. Essentially it was homophobic and sharing such crap on faceache or anywhere else is against the law. It's called homophobia.

SillyNickname · 18/01/2014 09:42

Oh OP I oft a woman from around my area during the summer with a child my DDs age and I thought we clicked immediately, until she casually mentioned a little "paki" in the playground. My eyes nearly popped out of my head I felt so let down!!! Never spoke to her again but really regret not saying something to her!

However, I'm surprised to find I'm in the minority about the JC pic, I'm ashamed to say I actually thought it was funny and until now didn't even connect the two "homophobic and insult" which really proves the point that gay references are obviously used far too much as insults!

Joysmum · 18/01/2014 09:56

I have a number of gay friends on Facebook and it was my married (lesbian) friends that shared this pic first, it's popped up loads of time on my wall.

None of my gay mates are offended and many have shared the pic.

Funny how the majority of those who get most offended actually aren't gay. Hmm

Dawndonnaagain · 18/01/2014 10:05

Funny how the majority who get least offended have gay friends. Hmm

Perhaps a lecture on 1) ownership and 2)Irony would enable a brief moment of comprehension, Joysmum

PaperBagPrincess · 18/01/2014 10:07

Unfriend her and cool the RL 'friendship'.

Racist and homophobic - she sounds charming!

SuzanneUK · 18/01/2014 10:54

The PC brigade would be the ones that ensure people are not racist, sexist or homophobic.

No, you have the people who care about the way oppressed minorities are referred to, and you have a rabid snarling sub-group who live and breathe only for the opportunity to throw an absolute fucking duck-fit whenever someone uses a currently inappropriate term to describe someone from an oppressed minority.

The sub-group is known collectively as 'The PC Brigade'.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/01/2014 11:05

You think what you like, Suzanne. If that's the only argument you can come up with, despite what was posted about homophobia, well...

PaperBagPrincess · 18/01/2014 11:06

The PC Brigade? Urgh. Who are they? People who dont think 'Gay Cunt' is funny?

Jeremy whathisname and his band of Too Gear twats are all vile, anyway.

LondonNicki · 18/01/2014 11:08

Suzanne you should be ashamed of yourself. Seriously.

Topaz25 · 18/01/2014 11:44

I hate the use of the word gay as an insult and I hate Jeremy Clarkson but I wouldn't fall out with someone for sharing that photo on Facebook, they probably put about a second's thought into it and didn't intend to offend anyone.

Referring to your DD's classmate as a 'half boy' would bother me more, I presume she meant 'half caste'?!

Maybe she's clueless rather than a bad person?

SuzanneUK · 18/01/2014 12:09

High five to you, Topaz.

What an intelligent post.

You've restored my faith in the Mumsnet community.

SuzanneUK · 18/01/2014 12:19

Suzanne you should be ashamed of yourself.

No, I shouldn't - and I'll tell you why.

If that card had been pointing at a sleeping and unsuspecting Sue Perkins or Sandi Toksvig, I'd now be on my way to the culprits' houses to strangle the bastards personally.

But it wasn't pointed at a gay person: it was pointed at someone who is known for his homophobic 'jokes' and was for once having the joke played on him.

I understand why some people nevertheless would find it offensive but what I don't understand is the degree to which some of those people are offended.

Take a chill pill and start seeing this prank for the (relatively) harmless laddish nonsense it is.
