Dye their hair?

Genuine question. Not something I have considered in great detail. Just interested.

It seemed to work! I used to get them quite regularly as both my Mum and Nan were childminders with littleys who picked them up frequently!

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 16/01/2014 14:17

Marvellous!

Weegiemum · 16/01/2014 14:28

My dd1 will be 14 in 3 weeks (how????) and she naturally has lovely long dark brown hair. I've allowed her henna since the summer and it's gorgeous - looks more natural on her than her actual habit, she's very fair skinned.

Dd2 just turned 10, she's had some temporary colours.

Both of them think I'm very UR as I won't allow bleach.

TokenGirl1 · 16/01/2014 14:48

A friend of a friend dyes her 4 year old's hair 'because it's not blonde enough'!!!

Skrifa · 16/01/2014 14:59

I'd let them use hair chalks to colour their hair from about 9 for more than just messing around and fun (for that, then younger would be fine). Actual dying hair, aboutm12?

Sparklymommy · 16/01/2014 15:15

Someone else said using hair tongs/straighteners is a good way of keeping nits away too.

DISCLAIMER: haven't tried this!

meditrina · 16/01/2014 15:23

Wash out silly streaks - any time really.

More serious (IYSWIM) colour change - not yet arisen but I guess mid/late teens (the later the better!)

Straighteners do frazzle the nits they come into contact with. But the little blighters are mobile, so you can't clear a head that way.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 16/01/2014 15:23

About 13-14, I think. Just those wash-in/wash-out things. Their mates used to come over to my house to do theirs during the school holidays, presumably because their mothers didn't want them ruining their tiles and towels Angry

DD2 had more permanent colour at 16, IIRC. Neither of mine has ever gone for anything outrageous though, so the age thing hasn't really been a problem. I wouldn't let them dye their hair permanently green at the age of 15, for example.

NearTheWindmill · 16/01/2014 21:37

What are hair chalks and where do you get them please?

BillyNotQuiteNoMates · 16/01/2014 21:39

My DS had a 6 inch, peroxide mohican in yr 6. Got it out of his system before he hit the comp. looked good too!

perplexedpirate · 16/01/2014 21:41

DS can dye his hair whenever he likes.
It's only hair; even permanent isn't really permanent.

Stinklebell · 16/01/2014 21:49

nearthewindmill. Hair chalks

My eldest was given a box for Christmas a couple of years ago and they were shite

Personally, I don't mind what she does with her hair, but school have strict rules about wacky colours and styles, so it has to be easily washed out.

I got some pots of dye from Superdrug for about a quid that washes straight out.

member · 16/01/2014 21:57

Dd is 12, 13 in a couple of months & hasn't shown any interest in dyeing it so far though she has started experimenting more with products & heated appliances in the last few months.

I'd allow semi from 13 but no bleach/attempting to go lighter. She has mid brown long hair.

squoosh · 16/01/2014 21:58

'A friend of a friend dyes her 4 year old's hair 'because it's not blonde enough'!'

Bloody hell! Dyeing a 4 year old's hair, that's shocking. Poor little kid, valued as an ornament.

rabbitlady · 16/01/2014 22:15

dye her hair? she's 31 and she hasn't tried it yet, but i've had no say over her hair since she was small and told me 'it's on my head...' Grin

TokenGirl1 · 17/01/2014 00:48

I know! The woman is all about looks and the child is a 'mini me'.

I'm normally 'each to their own' but I do judge on dyeing a pre schoolers hair for vanity's sake.

TokenGirl1 · 17/01/2014 00:49

I'd like to know how she keeps her still long enough to do it.

Back to the thread, I guess 13/14

TokenGirl1 · 17/01/2014 00:51

.....but not often, can't be good, especially for young skin. I try to avoid doing mine too often.

CouthyMow · 17/01/2014 01:19

DD was 14.

CouthyMow · 17/01/2014 01:29

DD has been asking since 12yo to have pillar box red hair, but her school is über strict on hair colours (to the point of exclusion) (they're equal opps on stupid rules about hair, as bots aren't allowed cut patterns in their hair OR anything shorter than a number 2 buzz cut). I have been promising her since then that I will let her do it one week before the end of Y11, AFTER all her exams. What will the school do - exclude her after she's sat her exams?!

In the meantime she dyes her (admittedly mousy not any particular colour) hair a variety of 'natural' shades. Though her latest, which she paid for herself, out of her Christmas money, is less natural, as it is a sort of black-red. Did get a snotty call about it, but I pointed out that it is not affecting her attendance or her learning abilities, it's not 'bright' and it could gave been far worse, given the colour she has wanted for almost four years...

Rosencrantz · 17/01/2014 01:33

12 was highlights. 14 by the time she was doing a full head - not bleach then, she'd decided to go darker.

Tbh, about about 14, they'll start experimenting with home dye whether you like it or not. Just try and stop them!

Mogz · 17/01/2014 06:07

My mum let me have one of those wash in wash out shaders when I was about 6 because I was obsessed with having red hair like Ariel! She never let me put permanent dye in though. My dad however actively encouraged it when I moved in with him and by my 18th birthday I'd been pink, purple, blonde and raven black several times over.
So I think I'm likely to do the same. It's fun and its not a truly permanent change.

BobaFetaCheese · 17/01/2014 06:13

12-13.
Same for my DS's.

I probably dyed mine once a month from 12-16, wonder why it's so dry and awful!

missymarmite · 17/01/2014 06:31

DP and his ex agreed to let me take DSD to have a few subtle highlights on the top layer when she was 11, which I though was a good compromise as it's not so invasive as a total head die, quite subtle and natural looking. She wanted to have bright colours but we said no!

Anything more than that I think would be too much until about 13, I think.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 17/01/2014 06:38

DD would love any colour TBH. She's almost 13 and I think she'l get it done for her birthday.
I am interested in who makes wash in and out colours now. when I was her age, it was shaders and toners. Help with the name please?
