Dye their hair?

Genuine question. Not something I have considered in great detail. Just interested.

Mine were 14 for natural colours. They're seventeen now, one has bright red, one has blue one has lilac!

queenofthepirates · 15/01/2014 20:48

About 40.

Her hair is too beautiful to dye

Elsiequadrille · 15/01/2014 20:49

Dd was approx 14 when I let her dye her hair with henna.

Lovecat · 15/01/2014 20:49

I'm not sure. DD is almost 9 and her blonde hair is naturally darkening. It's currently a very dull mouse colour with the occasional streaks of pale white and golden blonde in it, so looks oddly highlighted at the moment anyway! Having had dark brown/nearly black hair all my life, I'm surprised at how upset I am about it not being blonde anymore (mind you, DH was white blond as a child and is now a dull mouse - he went out and bought some Klorane chamomile shampoo for her when we were in France last year as he was upset it was going darker...)

If I thought her hair was going to turn as dark as mine then no way would I let her dye it until she was at least 15/16, but if it was going to stay this sort of nothing colour then I'd let her have highlights from secondary if she wanted, to bring it back to what it was.

OpalQuartz · 15/01/2014 20:50

Probably year 7 if she asked for it, as long as it was semi permanent and a natural colour. I started using Toners and Shaders towards end of year 7 myself

SuckItAndSee · 15/01/2014 20:53

secondary school age, i guess

BackforGood · 15/01/2014 20:54

When she's an adult, and then she can make all her own decisions.

TheDoctorsNewKidneys · 15/01/2014 20:54

12-13.

BananaNotPeelingWell · 15/01/2014 20:56

Dd had hers done a few months ago, she's 15. I took her to a hairdresser though.

youarewinning · 15/01/2014 20:56

I know girls in primary school as young as 5 having their hair dip dyed.

I have a DS with a grade 2 all over so don't feel qualified to have an opinion.

MrsKoala · 15/01/2014 20:56

When i worked in a secondary school loads of girls (and boys) arrived in year 7 with highlights and eyebrow/belly peircings (one girl said her and her mum got their belly pierced for her 10th birthday Shock ). Some of the girls wore more make up than most adult women i know. I hate to say it but i was very prudish about it all.

Nocomet · 15/01/2014 21:00

DD1 never
DD2, if she asks 13

DD1 has amazing deep multi shade auburn hair, I can't think of anything that would look better.

DD2 was born blonde and it's gradually going darker, she has pale skin, dark eyebrows and is quietly very pretty. I suspect any colour done nicely would suit her, just as she can wear absolutely any colour or style of clothes and look right.

MajesticWhine · 15/01/2014 21:00

My eldest is 13 and so far I have said no. If she really pleads, and it is something quite tasteful, then I might say yes. Semi permanent at least.

Jbck · 15/01/2014 21:02

this thread might help too.

Nocomet · 15/01/2014 21:03

However, neither gets permission until, I'm allowed red and purple streaks in mine, which DDs have expressly forbidden.

mintberry · 15/01/2014 21:07

My mum decided I was going to be bleached from brown to blonde when I was 11, but that was a shitty thing to do.
14-16 depending on the subtlety of the colour... But I will try as hard as possible to encourage them to be happy with what they have (probably won't work, but still)!

WhenWhyWhere · 15/01/2014 21:08

9? 10? We let them dip dye their hair wild colours at the beginning of the summers holidays then cut the dyed part of the hair before school restarted.

Other than the dip dying when they were younger they haven't dyed their hair and they are in their late teens.

GraduallyGoingInsane · 15/01/2014 21:16

Mine are all very very pale blonde naturally so highlights haven't been an issue. If they wanted to go darker/red/another natural shade I think 16 (i.e. Sixth form) would be the earliest I'd let them during school terms. The school is very strict and I wouldn't want another battle alongside makeup/skirt length/wrong coloured coats etc.

Holidays would be fair game from secondary onwards.

Nishky · 15/01/2014 21:19

whywhenwhere. Do you do the dip dying at home? If so what do you use?

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 15/01/2014 21:23

I allowed temp colour when she asked. About 12. Nothing outrageous, darker tone of blonde.
A friend allows more wild colours in summer hols.

zoezebraspartydress · 15/01/2014 21:29

13/14 - I'm probably in the minority but I'd be more comfortable with wacky colours than grown-up highlights!

Cocolepew · 15/01/2014 21:30

DD has her her dipped dyed (blonde) and she's 12.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/01/2014 21:30

16 and not a minute before.

Spottybra · 15/01/2014 21:31

I was 11 when I started so I guess somewhere similar. If the secondaries are still strict it will probably be highlights rather than the wash in- wash out ones I used.

SanityClause · 15/01/2014 21:36

DD1 is 14 and had blue dip dye in the summer.

She'd like to dye it a bright pillar box red, but we haven't got round to it yet.

I sort of think, if she can't do it now, when will be a good time?
