To ask MIL to wear socks?

quellehorreur · 14/01/2014 11:24

I have namechanged for this so DH doesn't see.

MIL wears boots and shoes with bare feet. When she arrives at our house and takes off her boots I can see her feet look a bit slimy and she walks all over the carpets where the children are crawling and playing. I really hate this!

I'm going to have to say something (or get DH to as I'm a coward) but I have no idea if I'm being unreasonable and actually it is a perfectly normal thing to do?

It seems so revolting to me! Her sister does it too, she took her boots off once and she had a tissue wrapped round her toes obviously to soak up the wetness. Why not just wear socks?! Am I being unreasonable to find this unhygenic and gross? Is this a normal thing for people to do?

This is making me cringe just reading it.

It's vile.

Dinosaurdrip · 05/03/2014 19:25

Eww my mil does the same and I returned home once after she had been looking after DD to find DD just about to put one of her corn plasters in her mouth. Even before this though it would gross me out when she put her feet up on the sofa etc but I am far too much of a coward to say anything.

MarmaladeShatkins · 05/03/2014 19:26

Me too, WooWoo.

Feet are just so grim and I can't think what sort of an arsehole you'd have to be to gop them, uninvited, all over someone else's house. IMO, it's akin to dragging your bumhole all over the carpet.

usuallyright · 05/03/2014 19:28

Wha? Feet are the same as bum holes?

behindthetimes · 05/03/2014 19:29

could you buy her some nice slippers to wear at your house? that might be a less offensive way ofsolving the problem.

MarmaladeShatkins · 05/03/2014 19:30

That's right, usuallyright. But worse. I'd go as far as to say I'd rather look at a bumhole than a skaggy old foot. Especially one covered in slime.

WhoDaresWins · 05/03/2014 19:31

I have never, ever heard of having bare feet in winter leather boots. It sounds minging.

Shonajoy · 05/03/2014 19:31

Why don't you say you've got a thing about bare feet? As in you hate anyone's bare feet? That does sound gross.

Cigarettesandsmirnoff · 05/03/2014 19:37

op my mil does this too.

She works on her feet all day and wears no socks with her shoes.

Her canvas shoes are so bad her feet STINK the fucking room out , she put her feet on my settee and left a smell here after she had gone.

I feel your pain on the slimy black leather boot. Mil has a black ring round her foot when she takes hers off. Her toe nails are black!

I'm going to buy slippers , I don't care f I upset her. My carpet it cream!

random1313 · 05/03/2014 19:51

I agree with EmmaBemma and TamerB; if you ask your guests to take off their shoes, you should expect some dirty feet/socks, but it would be very rude to comment negatively about that since feet aren't really supposed to be that clean anyway. I also think it would be gross to have to wear someone else's socks/slippers, so it would be bad to make guests do that. It would make their feet sweat much more than going barefoot would too. I think it's fine to ask guests to remove their shoes though, and to ask those who are wearing socks to remove them as well if you want; feet are usually cleaner and leave less dirt than shoes/socks.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 05/03/2014 19:56

A bsket of artisan slippers by the door. That's what you need. Grin

scarletforya · 05/03/2014 20:07

Bllleeeeuuurrgggghhhh AF that is a revolting story.

AnyFucker · 05/03/2014 20:11

I know. The sighing and lip smacking from the receiver dog was stomach churning too

MarmaladeShatkins · 05/03/2014 20:14

OMG the artisanal slippers thread!

The OP is one of those that you sometimes unexpectedly think of when perusing the chickens in Aldi or looking out the window on the bus and let out an involuntary guffaw. Grin

paxtecum · 05/03/2014 20:19

No doubt she sits on your loo too.
Goodness, she might leave germs on the loo seat.

I think people are over obsessed with germs.

Do you really think that socks or tights act as an effective barrier to keep all germs contained?

What about leather gloves - they must be full of germs.

MarmaladeShatkins · 05/03/2014 20:26

Yeah but presumably her kids don't crawl around playing on the loo seat?

Leather gloves contain hands. Hands don't get all claggy/slimy like feet!

Coconutty has it.

Get one of those foot bath tray things built behind your front door.

Mind you, people like OP's MIL are usually so rhino-hided that they'll insist that their feet are exceptionally clean and do not require a foot cleanse.

lljkk · 05/03/2014 20:33

pmsl @ dog salivating at sweaty feet.

My feet are ice cubes & socked up most the time, I dream of having hot feet Envy

Folk are definitely too obsessed with germs.
I bet the same folk fussing over yucky feet on their floors would never actually sit on their own floors.

usualsuspect33 · 05/03/2014 21:11

I don't like feet, that's why I insist people keep their shoes on in my house.

Alwayscheerful · 05/03/2014 21:20

My sister used to live In Hong Kong, an ex pat friend came home to find the baby sucking the Phillipino nanny's toe in place of a dummy. Sorry OP, I digressed because of AF' story, please OP, buy her a lovely pair of slippers to use at your house or let her keep her shoes on.

NewBeginings · 05/03/2014 21:33

Just train yourself not to look. Then it's like it's not happening.
