To ask MIL to wear socks?

quellehorreur · 14/01/2014 11:24

I have namechanged for this so DH doesn't see.

MIL wears boots and shoes with bare feet. When she arrives at our house and takes off her boots I can see her feet look a bit slimy and she walks all over the carpets where the children are crawling and playing. I really hate this!

I'm going to have to say something (or get DH to as I'm a coward) but I have no idea if I'm being unreasonable and actually it is a perfectly normal thing to do?

It seems so revolting to me! Her sister does it too, she took her boots off once and she had a tissue wrapped round her toes obviously to soak up the wetness. Why not just wear socks?! Am I being unreasonable to find this unhygenic and gross? Is this a normal thing for people to do?

Horrid, you poor thing, however at least your MIL isn't asking you to put something up her rectum a la pre xmas thread...

random1313 · 05/03/2014 11:28

I think you're being unreasonable. It's very common to wear boots without socks. It's also much healthier to be barefoot around the house, not wearing socks or slippers, and wearing all types of shoes without socks encourages this. Also, you say her feet dry quickly and you aren't worried about her infecting the children because it's not that bad, so I don't really see the problem, other than you need to get over your dislike of slightly dirty feet.

Buy her a pair of slippers to wear at your house.

DomesticDisgrace · 05/03/2014 11:30

Oh my God I'd vomit

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 05/03/2014 13:30

Call me old fashioned, but I don't try to control what people have on their feet at my house. They can even wear their shoes if they like, shock horror!

AddToBasket · 05/03/2014 13:35

I'm going to guess the OP doesn't have a pet!

YABU. I really can't work out what you think is going to happen.

AddToBasket · 05/03/2014 13:37

I'm gong to guess the OP doesn't have a pet.

YABU. I can't really understand what you think is going to happen.

AddToBasket · 05/03/2014 13:37

Whoops (!)

TamerB · 05/03/2014 14:47

I don't wear socks all summer. It seems much better to me to keep my sandals on, I can't think why people would expect me to take them off and have bare feet in their house.

OpalQuartz · 05/03/2014 15:19

When you say her feet look a bit slimy, do you mean sweat, or is she the creature from the black lagoon?

usualsuspect33 · 05/03/2014 15:31

YABU.

Just let her keep her bloody shoes on.

EmmaBemma · 05/03/2014 15:34

Yes, I think if you're going to have a pole up your arse about shoes in the house, you might have to be around a pair of less-than-lemon-fresh feet occasionally.

AnyFucker · 05/03/2014 15:36

A relative of mine who shall remain nameless used to wear leather shoes and no socks

Then take the shoes off and invite the dog to lick the feet, imbetween the toes and everything. The dog would literally salivate at the slimy footed ectasy of it

I feel really sick now

TamerB · 05/03/2014 15:36

I agree-you ask them to take their shoes off and they do! Then you complain!

jenniferturkington · 05/03/2014 15:45

Yanbu. That's gross. I'd say something I think!

TamerB · 05/03/2014 15:58

You can't have it both ways! Either they take their shoes off or they don't. I continually ask the 'shoes off brigade' why on earth they want me walking over their floors in bare feet and they never reply-now it appears they don't! They want total control and to dictate exactly what you wear on your feet when you go in their house. I don't wear socks in the summer-I am not carrying them around on the off chance- and the one thing for sure is that I am not wearing anyone else's socks or slippers.
If you don't want them in bare feet, go for the only other option and keep their shoes on.

BumpyGrindy · 05/03/2014 17:31

YABU. My MIL is the same and not only that but she's been seen rolling her manky foot over my DC toys while she watches TV!

BUT it would be very rude to say anything.

BumpyGrindy · 05/03/2014 17:31

AF you've caused me to vom with your terrible tale!

AnyFucker · 05/03/2014 17:35

and every word is true, unfortunately Shock

usuallyright · 05/03/2014 18:00

Oh dear. I wear boots without socks and let the dog lick my feet when I take them off. What can I say, she loves my feet!(wouldn't do it in company or in someone else's house)

AnyFucker · 05/03/2014 18:50

You filthy mare !

Pheonixisrising · 05/03/2014 18:53

eugh a thread on toe glue !

a little bit of sick has come up

MarmaladeShatkins · 05/03/2014 19:15

YANBU

That would give me the serious boak. I hate feet without a coating of slime but with would just make me feel green. Envy

Moreover, how can anyone bear to go around without socks or tights between their foot and shoe?!

Tell her to carry some pop socks around in her bag. Rank hag.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 05/03/2014 19:21

I hate wearing socks as well and purposely keep a pair of slippers at PIL to slip into. I'm not a foot fan :)

MarmaladeShatkins · 05/03/2014 19:22

Gwendoline, you are a saint.
