Am I right or wrong? About tea.

I was making dh a cup of tea this morning and apparently made a massive faux pas. I used a fork to stir it instead of a spoon as the spoons needed washing up awful slattern.

I can't see that it makes any bloody difference at all, but according to dh it makes a massive difference as the fork has gaps so doesn't stir the tea properly.

I have done this many a time before and he has never commented, but apparently he will have been able to tell and has thought it was just a weak tea.

I may have poured the tea in the sink and told him to make his own so i'm quite hoping I am not bu! I don't drink tea, only coffee so he says I wouldn't understand.

I find it oddly upsetting.

MrsOakenshield · 14/01/2014 10:39

you shouldn't stir the teabag around with anything! Make tea, leave to brew for 2 or 3 minutes depending on strength of tea/personal preference, remove teabag without squeezing. That's it. No stirring needed.

Scribblegirl · 14/01/2014 10:40

Mwhahah. This is brilliant. Enjoy the smug, OP.

Weirdly I would have no problem with a tea made with a fork (so long as it didn't pierce the teabag) but I would be a bit worried that with a coffee the granules wouldn't dissolve properly. It seems a bit illogical but taking a sip of coffee and getting a mouthful of granules makes me sad.

Debate in this house, mind, is milk then tea/coffee or vice versa...

Milk last with tea, the milk cools it down so it won't brew properly if you put it in first, unless its poured from a tea pot and then you put milk in the cup first, especially if using a fine china cup.

Milk/cold water in with the granules and then hot water, other wise you scorch the coffee.

Crinkle77 · 14/01/2014 10:45

I have used a pen in the past

'Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
Who'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me?

A recently added verse sings --

Forgetting that spoons stir hot liquids much better
The swagman immersed his tool in his tea
And he sighed as he spied his old willy boiling
Now I can't bugger you, so will you bugger me?'

Courtesy of Bill Bryson, this thread made me think of him.

Binky I shall bow down to your wisdom (mostly because that accords exactly with what I thought was right in the first place [also now smug])

WireCat · 14/01/2014 11:01

Using a fork to make tea has made me giggle!

Next time dh asks me to make him a tea, I'm shall do he same.

He is Very Specific in is tea making so I mostly don't bother. And if I do, I give him a murderous glare & he drinks is nicely! Wink

Binkyridesagain · 14/01/2014 11:04

Scribble I am glad that it supports you in your debate. We can't let the ignorant win on matters like this. What will it be next, using your fingers to eat cake? slippery slope, slippery slope!

WireCat · 14/01/2014 11:06

I use my fingers to eat cake.

My kids use a fork.

Think they've read debretts.

Binkyridesagain · 14/01/2014 11:08

You use your whole hand to eat cake, in fact if you use both hands you can get more in. You never use fingers or a fork.

Can someone please explain to me how the fuck you use a fork AND spoon to eat cake, do you use a pincer movement of something?

Koothrapanties · 14/01/2014 12:03

I am still glowing with smugness. It's a lovely feeling. Grin

I just dunk the tea bag in a few times and then leave it in there so no practical advice.

However, refuse to make tea from now on if he is going to moan, or alternatively use a fork every time Grin

normalishdude · 14/01/2014 12:10

definitely leave him.

CosyTeaBags · 14/01/2014 12:11

I have been known to use a biro.... (I wouldn't recommend it, tea gets all inside the plastic tube, but makes no difference to the taste)

Volestair - damn you are right!

Thank you everyone for your assistance, I'm very happy the majority agreed with me! Oh it is lovely to be right for a change. Grin

CosyTeaBags I have done this too, then had tea splodges all over my papers at work. Definitely not to be recommended Grin

wonderingsoul · 14/01/2014 12:44

i have to say.. you have to put the milk in after the water then suger....

also when making coffee you put the sugar in with the granuals others wise it doesnt mix right.... and the milk last...

it drives me potty when people put the m ilk in with the tea bag/coffee granuals.

its just not right!

Ooooh nooo wonderingsoul.

I am with you on the tea (although I don't take sugar)

But you have to put coffee, sugar and milk in then the water. Otherwise the hot water will burn the coffee.

wonderingsoul · 14/01/2014 13:08

nooo thats only if you use "real" coffee..

volestair.. i dont drink tea often but i'll agree with the suger before the milk.. purely becasue i do it with coffee.. even if we go out for coffee i have to ask them to put the sugger in first lol
