The one I saw last night had a mum cheerily praising ww for improving her relationship with her daughter because now the mum was slim they had so much in common!

Sorry mum, I can't relate/spend time with/talk or hang out with you because you are fat.....

AIBU to think wtf and to complain to ww?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1963391-To-find-the-new-weight-watchers-ads-are-a-bit. This should tell you what you want to know!

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/01/2014 08:59

Maybe it's meant as she is fitter and healthier and more confident now to go out with her daughter and do things and she's discovered they like the same stuff.

I "read" it as she's just able to do things now as before she couldn't keep up.

fedupandfifty · 11/01/2014 09:04

I'm intrigued. Haven't seen it. Is it on youtube?

BrownSauceSandwich · 11/01/2014 09:13

I think there's nothing at all surprising about the diet industry telling us fatties that pretty much every aspect of our lives would be better if we were thin.

Hoppinggreen · 11/01/2014 09:13

Me and DH were watching it last night and commenting how nice it s that her daughter likes her much more now she's thin!!!!
I'm not sure I actually find it offensive, just a bit stupid

NickyNackyNooNoo · 11/01/2014 09:15

YANBU, it does give the message fat mothers can't bond with slim daughters. My Mum is a size 18 and I'm a 10 we get on hunky dory thanks very much, she's happy and I'm happy Smile

It's on a par with that hideous Disney advert where the teenage daughter 'bonds' with her father once he's paid for a trip to Disney. My 9 year old DS was Shock at that one seriously proud he can see through the advertising shite

candycoatedwaterdrops · 11/01/2014 09:22

I have a slim mum and I'm her not-so-slim daughter. We watched the ad and I asked if she'd love me more if I was thin. She said; "fuck off, no!" and we laughed. We get on really well. Grin

MostlyCake · 11/01/2014 09:29

Haha! I didn't think I'd be the first to post about it! Thanks Smoorokins. I'll read that one and add my outraged splutterings Grin

The advert is so thinly veiled and desperate it is a bit pathetic really. Maybe they're going for an anti media campaign?!

I have a cuddly mum and I will love her whatever her size.

Pixel · 11/01/2014 17:47

I really hate that Disney teenage girl ad, it's even worse than the slimming ads.

Must admit I don't take all that much notice because all slimming ads are bad! Always full of annoying smug people. Yes love, come back in two years if you haven't put it all back on like most of us do .

frugalfuzzpig · 11/01/2014 17:51

I haven't seen it but the description reminds me of there godawful radio ads for some dental company (dawood and tanner or something like that) - stuff like "now she's got her teeth fixed I proposed to her because if I don't snap her up someone else will" shallow twat Hmm

frugalfuzzpig · 11/01/2014 17:51

These not there

thegreylady · 11/01/2014 18:00

I am on the plump side-dd is slender and I honestly don't think we have ever made more than a passing reference to weight.

Piscivorus · 11/01/2014 18:03

It is appalling, disgusting, manipulative and discriminatory crap. If I thought my family would love me more if I lost weight I would be heartbroken.

One of the reasons so many people are overweight is believing the nonsense dietary advice they are given and eating the toxic synthetic junk that these companies manufacture. If their stuff really worked they would be out of business as everybody would be slim and not perpetuating these toxic attitudes

HellonHeels · 11/01/2014 18:32

The message it sends is horrible. However I'm a chunker and sadly my mum (slim) definitely likes me more if I am thin. She was vile during my adolescence and twenties about me being fat.

maudpringle · 11/01/2014 19:21

Its shite

Punkatheart · 11/01/2014 19:54

Well I think you look beautiful, Hell. That was cruel of your mum and unfair.

You are fine. Don't forget it.

MostlyCake · 11/01/2014 20:50

hell that's awful of your mum. Some people have a very blinkered view of 'beauty' and forget it's only skin deep.

I bet you're beautiful inside and out. Your mum however......

Stupid bloody advert just plays up to certain ideals and opinions and makes people feel like crap. Diet or don't diet! You might change physically but you're still the same person with the same values, opinions etc that you were before you started the stupid diet!

WW should be focusing on being healthy rather than trying to convince people their problems can be solved by just being thinner.
