Just been out for a meal.

Food arrived from the kitchen on either a slate or a giant block of wood.

What the fuck is wrong with plates???

Why do they feel the need to stick my food on something I stick on my roof or a bloody breadboard?

Is it just me? I WEEP for the poor neglected china.

While we're on the subject, what is all this seev

KipperTheFish · 13/01/2014 20:20

Oops... While we're at it, what is all this serving drinks in jam jars, milk bottles and cocktails in tea cups all about?

I had a mojito in a jam jar and it looked like they'd been out pond dipping Hmm

YANBU to mourn the plates, in a world where much has gone amiss, china is the only thing that still does what it says on the tin. Plates don't let us down, they just go on doing their wee jobs, until wood came along, trying to be up to the minute but just looking plain stupid.

sherazade · 13/01/2014 20:23

mind you the cutest thing i've seen in a resutaurant lately was chips served in mini metal frying baskets. But there were still plates.

thenightsky · 13/01/2014 20:58

I must confess to liking chips served in little buckets. They stay warm longer than when they are scattered on a plate.

Not if its a nicely warmed plate.
You also get more chips on a plate.

I suppose I'd rather have chips in a basket than mushy peas in a shitty little ramekin like i did once.

thenightsky · 13/01/2014 21:40

babybarrister fuck me, that is a whole new level!! The back of your hand instead of a plate!! Shock

Primadonnagirl · 13/01/2014 21:44

Has anyone else been " introduced to the specials menu?!" I was last week although I don't think we' ll keep in touch.

thenightsky · 13/01/2014 22:48

Keema, you weren't dining out in Ripponden Yorkshire, were you?

OldDaddy · 17/01/2014 11:29

Barbarians the lot of you. serving on a slate, providing the chef knows what he's doing will allow some dishes to experience Heterogeneous nucleation improving the flavours. or maybe it's Homogeneous nucleation. But probably just a load of bollocks.

All food should be served on those plates that look like they belong to the WI or a mental institution - you know a light green colour with the occasional chip.

VikkiMumsnet · 17/01/2014 17:02

Hi OP, we really liked your Q and decided to put it to the Hairy Bikers when they visited MNHQ for a web chat! Dave was VERY much on board.

SPsMrLoverManSHABBA · 17/01/2014 17:18

I have only just seen this. I thought the same after visiting a pub. I ordered burger and chips and it came on a long slab of wood. No where to put sauce to dip and cutting the burger was hard work as it was wider than the slab

wyldchyld I work at a Harvester. I agree those metal dip pots are way too small even when they are full up. If you ask for an extra pot of the same sauce you have ordered they won't charge you. We only have to charge if you have an additional different sauce to the one you ordered with your meal. However I always use my common sense and if for example someone orders a chicken breast with jack daniels sauce but can i also have a peppercorn sauce and then their friend orders a steak with peppercorn sauce i will ask the kitchen for an extra peppercorn sauce for the steak meal so I don't have to charge for the additional sauce if that makes sense. We are not told to do this however so your server may charge if you order two difference sauces to go with one meal. If someone else orders their meal with the extra sauce that you want get them to ask for extra.

nappyaddict · 21/01/2014 16:49

I agree the mushy peas in a pot is very annoying. You can't eat them properly!! Along with greaseproof paper so you end up eating bits of paper with your dinner Hmm

What does everyone think of square or rectangle plates and milkshakes served in milk bottles?

And what about wooden/slate/glass/marble cheese/bread boards?

jay55 · 21/01/2014 16:59

There's a restaurant in Vegas that serves croquettes in a trainer. It's weird.

nappyaddict · 21/01/2014 17:01

Haven't read but have been served all day breakfast in the frying pan, on a massive slate with baked beans in half of a baked bean tin. P

expatinscotland · 21/01/2014 17:06

Hate square plates.

These slates and boards are Jamie Oliver's fault.
